Joy and Austin's House

Joy and Austin Forsyth's fixer upper house has come a long way since we saw it on Counting On just before their wedding. Jim Bob and Michelle and most of the unmarried kids (everyone but John) celebrated Jana's 28th birthday in Australia, while the married couples got together at Joy and Austin's house, along with Kendra's family, to honor John-David's special day.

    1. They probably use those when it's just her and Austin eating, and when a bunch of people come over they use paper plates, nothing wrong with that.

    2. I guess whenever you have more than 2 people eating, the paper and Styrofoam and plastic comes out? That's a shame, because there are so many good dishes available at thrift stores that you don't need to be without real dishes for guests.

    3. We have dishes, but use paper for bday or other get togethers. Why does this matter to you?

    5. Maybe no one bought them any, paper plates are a Duggar tradition, so bad for the environment, I dread to think how many they use in a year!

    6. What do dishes have to do with a birthday celebration?

      Delete
    7. She most likely has dishes in her home. Most married couples normally have dishes. When there's a party us Mamas do make an exception and opt for paper plates. A newly married couple will usually have 4-8 plates in their cabinet because it's just them that live there. Therefore they may not have enough glass plates to accommodate everyone. Also, in the third trimester it's a little harder to wash dishes because it requires you to stand in one place for quite a while. It requires you to lean forward and bend down to place them in the dishwasher and on swollen feet albeit. It's hard to enjoy your guests while you are in the kitchen loading the dishwasher because you didn't want to pay $3 for paper plates. Oh and I see hidden valley ranch on the counter. Whew that stuff is a beast to scrub out of a bowl after it's sat in it a while, so then she would need to soak and scrub that bowl. Now I could keep dissecting this sweet picture of brothers, sisters and in laws having a great time together but I think I've made my point. This website is called The Duggar Family Fan Blog meaning it's for those people who are fans of the Duggar Family. If you're not a fan this may not be the blog for you.

    8. I always use paper when we have a large amount of guests. I do not want to be stuck with doing dishes instead of socializing with my guests.

    9. Besides what does it matter to anyone anyways. This post is about his party not their choice of dinnerware.

    10. Its maybe easier to serve food on paper plates...
But there were some women (and men) to quickly clean the dirty dishes so I don’t see the use of paper plates...
I would never serve my brother food on a paper plate unless we’re on a camping trip...

    11. We use paper plates and bowls on a daily bases along with plastic utensils. We also use plastic cups, but we have a recycling bin that goes in every week. Not everyone just tosses this stuff in a landfill. And besides there is no way I’m washing that many dishes by hand. Our tiny kitchen comes with only one dishwasher. Me!

    12. I use paper plates every day, don't have a dishwasher. I raise 4 gkids, and am disabled. Why okay for some of us to use but not if on tv? And doesn't almost everyone use them for get togethers?

    13. Seriously!? Who cares that they are using paper goods! and here we go with the Duggar's are trashing the environment. Get over it people! Always got to try and bring them down... guess what? It's not working. Whenever I have a large party and kids are involved or not, believe me I'm going to use paper goods. Having a few over for dinner, it's my china. Man some people need to relax a little....

    14. Joy’s wedding registry wasn’t for her....the registry was for things at they donated to those in need (I believe it was donated to battered women who were starting over after leaving an abusive environment). If you saw it on her registry and they were purchased, she wouldn’t have gotten them.

    15. And here we go again...nosey, judgementals...Seriously folks to scrutinize every single post down to the most miniscule thing is tiresome and ridiculous...i suppose if they didn't use paper plates then someone would say they are wasting to much water to clean them. 🎵Dont worry...be happy🎶

    18. anon@8:27- I certainly don't care one way or another what the Duggars choose for their dinnerware. However, they've made a big deal in the past about how frugal they are and "buying used, save the difference" has been their motto to live by. Many think that using paper or styrofoam plates appears to be a major contradiction. I can't recall ever seeing them use regular ones.

      Delete
    19. Paper and plastic is wasteful and that's all there is to it. It's work washing dishes but life is all about work, and you're not going to get away from it. A family of 21 people should have that motto hanging in their house. And "Many hands make light the work."

      Delete
    20. The Duggars probably have a dishwasher and a dishwasher uses less energy than hand washing dishes. Does not take much effort to clean off dirty dishes and load a dishwasher, even if you are pregnant. And anyways, her husband could do it for her.

No one learns how to be environmentally responsible unless they are taught how to be that way. This has nothing to do with extreme judgement.

A reasonable and intelligent person would say.. hey, thanks. I was not aware that using paper plates and plastic cutlery was harmful for the environment. I will think twice the next time I use them.

    21. Allow me to mention how particular recycling programs can be. Ours will not accept the following items:

Paper plates - used, or with food residue (attracts bugs and animals)

Plastic utensils - used, or with food residue (ditto)

Plastic cups - the "thin" kind, as shown in red in the picture (they shatter and clog up the recycling facility machinery)

      Paper cups (contain food residue)

Deli trays and plates, thin plastic, the kind pictured (they are too thin when flattened and get accidentally mixed with paper)

      Rotisserie chicken containers (ditto)

Any thin lid from any plastic container such as cottage cheese (they slide through with paper or can get stuck in the works)

Styrofoam or Polystyrene foam cups and plates (not an allowed substance)

"Compostable Plastics" #7 (you are to compost them, not recycle them)

      Pizza boxes (food residue)

Frozen food boxes that are waxed inside

Unopened mail (may contain something other than paper)

Plastic grocery sacks (they get tangled in the sorting machinery)

And that's just a partial list.

There are municipal recycling "police" that do spot checks of recycle bins. If you put unaccepted items into your bins for collection, you'll first get a note telling you what you did wrong. If you still violate the policies, they can fine you and/or refuse to pick up your recycling trash.

So please don't claim that you can recycle those used paper plates, because that is definitely not the case in every place! Those plates, utensils, and cups are nothing more than trash, where I live.

    23. Do all of you environmentalist warriors realize that paper plates are made from trees, a renewable resource, and they also biodegrade? Nothing will happen to our environment outside of God's will. We can do our best -- and sometimes that includes using paper plates -- but our world is in HIS hands.

  7. I have a cabinet full of dishes. But I also buy and use paper plates so that I do not have to constantly have a stack of dirty dishes to do. Why voice concern over Joy using paper plates? A bit not-picky.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The concern is for the fact that the Duggars continually create mountains of paper and plastic trash, especially when they have a group over to eat. That is not environmentally friendly. As a large family, they should be aware of the impact they have on the environment and do something to lessen it. Plus disposing of dishes wastes money, and the D's are supposed to be all about saving money.

      Delete
    2. Because it's wasteful to use them.

      Delete
    3. There are environmentally friendly options available today, let’s hope they are choosing wisely.

      Delete
    4. Use your critical energy to work on real issues. Why not focus more on working encouraging people to repurpose old buildings instead of tearing down forests to build new houses? Or donating food thrown away by fast-food joints to those in need? There are millions of more useful ways to protect the environment than sobbing over somebody using paper plates.

    3. Many people have an appliance called a dishwasher and it's not much of a chore to load it and start it up. I bet Joy and Austin have one.

      Delete
    4. Ever heard of a dishwasher?

      Delete
    5. I sure would do dishes for all those people. Either load the dishwasher or load up the sink and let everyone there pitch in. You'd be cleaned up in no time and would have a lot less trash to haul to the dump.

    6. They're a newly married couple, maybe they don't have enough plates for that many people, so they got paper plates

      Delete
    7. Paper plate warriors, thanks for the laughs. I think I'll go use a paper plate right now in your honor.

      Delete
    8. Actually, a dishwasher has been proven to be more environmentally friendly than doing dishes by hand. You use less energy (hence cheaper), less dish soap (again cheaper) and the dishes are cleaner.

      Delete
    9. Dishes aren't the problem. But what's WRONG with using paper plates? We don't have ANY idea of the circumstances under which she hose to use paper plates. Maybe they had ten minutes to prepare. Maybe someone else brought paper plates and they were trying to use them. It's so incredibly petty to be horrified over such tiny things as someone using paper plates. There are far bigger issues to deal with in the world. If everyone used their nitpicking in useful ways, maybe we actually COULD end some major problems. Some people are just too busy being nosy, argumentative, critical, and judgmental to think clearly.

Thanks for the label. There's an economics lesson in return.

    3. Anonymous @ 6:45- I had to laugh when I saw your post, as I taught a math class today on simple and compound interest! Paper plates for a Duggar-sized family alone, for multiple gatherings in a year, would come to quite a bit of money. Usually, it's not just the family either at their events. It's not my life, my house, or my family, so I'm not faulting them. I do think it's a huge waste to have an industrial dishwasher and commercial kitchen equipment, if you're not using it though. For as many gatherings as they've hosted over the last 20+ years, that's a lot of "paper plate" money that could be better spent on helping someone else though. Maybe the Duggars could consider hiring some responsible, needy young adults and could pay them to do kitchen clean-up at their family events at the Duggar house. Surely, there's got to be families within their own church with youth that could use the money.

    2. Sorry but guests in my home do not help with the dishes. I don’t care if they are family or not. The dishwasher was probably already full of pots and pans and bowls and utensils. Food prep dishes take up a lot of space. I generally have to run the dishwasher before I can even put plates in it. When we have a lot of people over, we use paper plates. The cleanup is much quicker and we can spend time enjoying our company not rinsing the dishes off, loading them, running the dishwasher and then unloading it. Let everyone make their own choices.

    3. Sorry, but I don't go to someone's house and not offer to help clean up, especially if the hostess is pregnant or has gone to the trouble of making a big meal. Time in the kitchen working together counts as visiting and enjoying each other's company.

    5. Once again, they are a newly married couple, and probably don't have enough no disposable plates and utensils for that many people. Think about it, they had their food and then probably dessert which would be 2 plates per person. If John David Jill Derick Joy Austin maybe Jessa and Ben Kendra's parents Joe however many of Kendra's siblings that came Israel and Spurgeon, they would need over 30 plates! Do you really think Joy Anna and Austin already have over 30 plates in their house? I don't think so.

And I'm sure there is some structural issue for the window to the right of the front door being lower than the rest. Unless of course, Jana can change it.

    6. You're right 10:42. Two panels per window, with the rods all hung at the same height and beyond the woodwork, would help unify that small space.

    7. Maybe when Jana returns from Australia she’ll do Joy a solid and show her how to hang curtains and their rods properly. My older sister helped me with all my window treatments and they look great thanks to her

    8. As much as I don't like the nitpicking, you're right about this one.

    9. Oh people be nice. Remember when we first got married and moved into our first apartment or house and we fixed it up, decorating it with what we had and it felt so exciting? It would have broke our hearts if people started saying negative things about how we decorated it, and what type of furniture we had etc. This world can be a rough place to live for all of us at times, so let's be an encouragement to people when we can. "Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy"

    10. The window height would be an indication of the layout of the house when built, presumably many years ago. The longer window would have been the living room and the shorter one would have been another room. Somewhere along the way, a wall was likely removed between the two to enlarge the living room.

    11. Exactly, and when you do a major remodel such as this one, windows are inexpensive to replace if you don't buy high-end. A little more thought put into a remodel project before starting pays big dividends later. That is why Jana could have guided them on the layout and fine elements prior to the demolation of a single wall. Also, the rustic bar treatment clashes terribly with the traditional style cabinets.

  29. Why does Jill always do that fake surprised smile? She does it in so many photographs, no one else looks surprised in the picture in fact it looks pretty low key, just a normal pretty smile would be enough.

    3. Anon @ 4:44 I think you are a tad defensive. Jill does pull this exaggerated surprised face a lot, I think anon @ 6:35 is right its become a habit, but she isn't a teenager anymore, and if she wants to be taken seriously working with students she needs to mature a bit.

    1. I don't see any grown-ups sitting on the floor, just one child, possibly two. It doesn't look like a very big room.

    2. Duggars are used to sitting on the floor - when Anna & josh were in the house where Jessa & Ben are now they hosted a dinner and many sat on the floor - same when Jessa & Ben hosted a harvest dinner. Not a big deal at all.

I'm not lazy but I prefer to use paper plate most of the time. GOD BLESS Austin & Joy and their baby.....

  39. Paper plate defenders: The Duggars have publicly made a big deal about being frugal. One can argue that their heavy use of paper dinnerware contradicts this. I don't think anyone would care what they use otherwise. Personally, I enjoy entertaining and setting a nice table with my good dishes, even for a large crowd. (Except for picnics or barbecues.) I want my guests to know that I appreciate their company by making things a bit special. I've never minded cleaning up and my immediate family helps out.

    1. Thanks 3:25, you understand. It's not just frugality that comes into question, it's caring about the environment, too. They rely heavily on foam plates and cups. We've seen that over and over on the show as well as in the pictures they release publicly. Those items are bad choices, and demonstrate a continued "we don't care" type of attitude, which is unfortunate.

You mention BBQ's and picnics. I purchased a set of inexpensive lightweight plastic dishes years ago at Target. They are perfect for outdoor dining. We really appreciate that they don't fold or flop like a loaded paper plate can.
