Derick Dillard has officially completed his first year of law school, so has been soaking up the family time that he now has more time for. Those of you who have friends of family members who have gone through law school (or perhaps you have gone through it yourself) know how time consuming it is. As one of their first post-finals activities, Jill and Derick took the kids to a friend's farm.

yay for family time :)
ReplyDeleteIf he's done with school, shouldn't he be working as an intern somewhere? Most 1L's work over the summer. Going to a farm doesn't look very impressive on a resume. Working does. So if he has a job, make another post about that.
ReplyDeleteHe’s not DONE school, just his first year! And things were super intense with very little family time! So let them have family time in peace!!!!
DeleteAnd I’m very sure he won’t let his family starve!!!!
I don't think we should assume Derrick is doing nothing during summer break. This family only gives out information if and when it suits them.
DeleteSpending time with your family is important too. Maybe he prefers to be more private as far as where he’s working.
Deleteinformation on derick's future job opportunities has not been made public yet so ellie cant post about it until she's given the info. rest assured, ellie will report when able. however, i think he deserves a little r&r after finishing his first year of school, whether its on a weekend or not. studies have shown that you are more productive if you 'take a break' for yourself, whether its just going out to lunch instead of eating at your desk or taking the family out. the idea is to recharge yourself and after finishing school, having a house built and moving all in the same semester, i think he's due
DeletePeople with jobs do things with their kids on weekends.
DeletePretty sure prospective employers are not going to be looking at blog posts when they make hiring decisions, and positive that Derick would not put what he does as family time on a resume.
DeleteAbsolutely family time is the priority!!! However, everyone I know that completed their first year of law school interned over the summer.
DeleteMy daughter was an intern after her 2nd year of law school. I don’t think it’s common to intern after the first year. She did, however, work for a firm as a runner after her first year.
Delete@3:54 Employers most certainly do look at your social media before hiring. Gone are the days when only some references and maybe a credit check were enough.
DeleteI hate to say it, but I agree with 8:17. Sometimes, your family life needs to be put on the back burner for your career. Internships are a lot more important than going to a farm with your toddlers.
DeleteWhy do so many people assume that because Derrick took his family to a friend's farm *one* day that he is doing nothing else *all* summer? A little googling reveals that many summer internships don't start until June.
Delete2:18, an internship would not be 24/7. I'm sure if he is doing one this summer, he is capable of managing his schedule.
DeleteIf a prospective employer didn't want to hire me because I spent time with my family, I wouldn't want to work for them anyway.
DeleteTime will tell, time will tell. Derick always seems to have a lot of time off, though. If he does work this summer, will Jill have to bring him lunch so he can eat with his kids every day?
Delete@2:18 An internship is more important than connecting with your family? Oh my. So glad I’m not in your family.
Delete9:58, what is wrong with being creative to find time to spend together as a family?
DeleteIt's not just law school that is time consuming, it's school in general. Please don't presume that other programs don't take as much focus and study as law School. Think about Doctors, nurses and other degrees that take years to attain. It's not unusual to have to work hard and set aside family time. It's just the price you have to pay.
ReplyDeleteNo one's presuming. This is an article about Derrick, and he is in law school, which is very rigorous.
DeleteAnon 8.27. I have to agree with you there, all study is intense. As someone who now teaches nursing degree students one day a week I see how hard these young people work toward their degree. I don’t know how things work in the states but here in the uk our students that are doing degrees in nursing, midwifery, or those training to be doctors spend hours working on wards & in theatre as well as their academic studies. My son has just qualified as a doctor & spent 5 years of study with a further 2 years of foundation training ahead of him. My daughter who has done a joint honours degree in law & English only spent 3 years studying & had no work experience to undertake at all, & I know she would be the first to admit her brother had to work far harder for his medical degree than she did. Even after my son completes his 7 years he will have to do another 10+ years training to be the cardio thoracic surgeon he wants to be. Derick is entitled to holiday time with his family, some courses do get a great deal of summer holiday time off. My daughter got at least 12 weeks every summer of her 3 year course, my son however got 6 weeks in his first year & after that just a few weeks here & there. As for people saying Derick will be a great attorney, well that remains to be seen, I just hope he has finally found what he really wants to do & completes the programme. Baring in mind he already has an accountancy degree that has gone to waste & the study he did to become a preacher seems to have turned into nothing, I hope he has finally found something he can stick with & make a career out of, not just for him but for his little family too.
DeleteWhat law school is he attending?
ReplyDeleteTime 9:35PM Wed 5/15/19
ReplyDeleteGood for you Derrick for completing law school. Love the DILLARD FAMILY YES.
He has 2 more years until he completes law school
DeleteHe's completed ONE year of a three year program. We can wish him well for that.
DeleteHe hasn't completed law school, just the FIRST YEAR. Awesome, nonetheless.
DeleteEven after those 3 years of law school, he still has to pass the bar exam.
DeleteGo easy on Neddy! 😊 Yes, we all love the Dillards!
DeleteLaw school there is only three years? Here it is 4 years
DeleteShe's pregnant for sure!🌺🌸🎀🎈
ReplyDeleteNope, that horse doesn't look pregnant.
DeleteThat isn't Jill in the above picture. Jill may be pregnant, but going to a farm or taking a picture aren't sure signs that she's expecting.
DeleteThe woman in the picture is not Jill. I wish Ellie would have clarified that. Eileen
DeleteIt says, friend Lindi, under picture.
DeleteEllie did clarify Jill wasn't in the picture. There is a caption under the picture identifying the woman as their friend Lindi. The caption has been there since Ellie put the post up.
DeleteThe caption said who the lady is.
DeleteI know who this friend is and frankly I'm surprised the Dillards are friends with them. Totally different lifestyles.
ReplyDeleteDifferent lifestyles or not, Lindi and her husband extended kindness to Jill and her family by inviting them to their farm. It looks like the Dillards had a wonderful time with their friends.
DeletePlease explain what is different about their lifestyles....why they would not be friends. I have friends who are so different in many ways, we’re still friends.
DeleteI think it's a good idea for the Dillards to branch out. They should have interaction and friendships with people who aren't EXACTLY like them.
DeleteMaybe the Dillards are trying to show how worldly and relatable they are now. They eat sushi, they hang out with college kids, Jill has a pierced nose, Jill has pants, and they have friends who are worldly, too. How neat is that? They're just like you and me!
DeleteWhy because she wears pants?? Jill does too now, and you’re allowed to have friends who think differently than you do🙄
DeleteI really enjoy updates on Jill, Derick and the boys.
ReplyDeleteNice to see them doing a fresh air trip, having fun & enjoying time together - so precious.
I'm a lawyer and I'm glad I did law school before having kids. My husband was really patient because it involved late night studying most nights.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, is all I can say.??? After I roll my eyes back into place. I was raised on a farm with 42 head of horses, & I never would put myself or someone else on the back of any horse with out proper gear¿¿ That horse has no bridle or halter, accidents only take a moment to happen. Maybe I am just getting old & thinking like an adult, but come on. I think they are a great family & all but this time I just had to speak up. Folks this is in no way ever safe. I am glad it was a nice event for them, but I am still shaking my head!
ReplyDeleteI know. It's a cute picture, but anything including a gust of wind can spook a horse. Guess we shouldn't question them as they always seem to have no problems doing things like this.
DeleteThis is ridiculous. The boys are sitting on a not moving horse with two adults holding on to them. There may very well be someone at the horse's head keeping it from moving. I grew up with horses and rode bareback all the time. Never once had an accident or close to it. Family friend suffered severe head injury placing saddle / stirrups on horse when one stirrup flew back up and hit her in the head. While she had a helmut on. What are the odds of that? Eileen
DeleteLike most of what this family does, it was just a photo op. The kids aren't riding the horse. They seemingly only do things to post public photos online.
DeleteThis I ridiculous. First of all people do ride bareback sometimes and there is nothing wrong with holding a child on a horse for a moment so they can see what it's like and get a picture. What an overreaction.
DeleteI grew up with horses and I just knew someone would comment on . It is just a little photo op where they are holding the kids with a calm horse. It is just fine :)
DeleteMy Dad was kind tohis kids and took us to ride rental horses one summer. On the way back my horse saw the stable, hung a quick sharp left angle, I flew off, landed on my back and it kinda spoiled my fun. But I would not say it was anyone's fault. These kids don't seem to be in an out of control situation. The adults have got hold of them.
DeleteAnon 11:02 I ride horses and people sitting on a horse without a bridle is absolutely dangerous. Horses are skittish by nature and will take off in a full run from just the sound of a bee. I love horses and have yet to see even one person sitting on the back of one without a bridle on the horse. No, what they are doing is dangerous. If it's just a photo op then they have to be more responsible so no one else will ever do this.
DeletePosing for pictures is nothing new. Back in the day before social media, people posed for pictures, too.
DeleteThis is no laughing matter. I know two people thrown from spooked horses. One friend is an experienced rider who was wearing a helmet. She suffered facial fractures. She had to have several surgeries to fix those. The other friend is a veterinarian and it was his own horse that threw him. He broke his arm in several places. I can't imagine sitting two very small kids on top of that very large horse, even for a moment, with no protection and no way to hold onto the horse. What were they thinking?!
Delete11:19, if they only do things to have pictures to post, then why don't they post a lot more pictures? You really think they make out their schedule based on what would make for good pictures, rather than taking pictures as they are making memories, like the rest of us?
DeleteThey’re holding onto the boys, it’s not like they just let them ride around on it.
DeleteHere is a great idea! Why don't they all just live in a rubber room to make sure they or their children never ever get hurt! Some of these comments are ridiculous. Don't get into cars don't take walks something bad can go wrong! Just plain and simple don't do nothing! I lost someone to a drunk driver. Maybe she should not had been out driving that day. She would still be alive. RIGHT!
DeleteTo all the shocked commenters lol -- I grew up with horses and can vault onto a draught horse no problem. I have been riding bareback on a Percheron and on a Clydesdale with no halter or bridle or anything. Not a big deal. Besides, the adults are holding on to the kids and even if the horse moved quickly, everyone would be fine.
DeleteAnon 2:12 WHAT!!! Without a bridle you can not steer or stop the horse. I never even heard of someone jumping on a horse without at least a bridle, no way! How in the world would you even stop the horse? Shelly, that's a little bit of a stretch. It's dangerous to put anyone on a horse without the ability to stop the horse if it takes off. We have horses and what Derick and Jill are doing is dangerous.
DeleteIt looks like Samuel and Israel are enjoying sitting on a horse.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Derick on finishing your first year of law school
Congratulations Derick for completing your first year of law school! I'm so glad they moved back home. Maybe our comments helped to bring them home. Just like the protesters helped to end the Vietnam War. Most readers do care. God bless Dillard family! Jane
ReplyDeleteHow can any part of the Dillards lives be compared to any part of the Vietnam War? GOD BLESS OUR VETERANS AND OUR TROOPS!!!!!!! Memorial Day is coming up. Please thank a veteran when an opportunity arises. They appreciate it!!!!!
Delete8:04, I was wondering the same thing. I think the reason they came home had nothing to do with their fans but had everything to do with the fact that it was a little scary and Jill couldn’t handle it. They had the luxury of coming home for visits on numerous occasions. The soldiers did not.
DeleteI think he's going to make a wonderful attorney. I wish people would stop spending their time questioning how he was able to go to law school and afford a new house. We don't know any of the financial situation with this couple, and why should we? Let's just wish them well. They look like they have a happy life and I'm glad for them.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree. Eileen
DeleteI agree. And you can always get student loans for graduate school.
DeleteDebbie- How do you know Derick will make a wonderful attorney, do you know him personally? Looking at his track record and tendency to jump from one venture to another, one could form the opinion that he'll be on to something else before long. I wish him well and hope he has the tenacity to stick with it.
DeleteI think Derick will let his own feelings overshadow how he should be interpreting the law of the land. You may place your hand on a Bible when being sworn into court, but that's as far as the Bible goes when it comes to civil law. Justice is supposed to be blind to creed. I don't think Derick will be able to disconnect the law and his religious beliefs. I wouldn't want a lawyer who was basing his arguments on what the Bible says. Objection!
DeleteAnon 11:19 I tend to agree with you. Derrick has strong personal beliefs and seems to feel the need to express them frequently. If he does that in a courtroom, he's not representing his client well. Quoting Bible as a defense doesn't go well with judges.
Delete8:18- There are many different law specialities. Maybe he'll focus on being a tax attorney, seeing as how he was an accountant. He isn't necessarily required to be in a courtroom.
DeleteI think Derrick must get bored easily because he loves a challenge. Also I think he is desperate for some meaningful control of destiny in this terrible world. I hope he achieves his goals. Don't forget all work and no play makes a dull boy, and that depressing old pop song about turning out just like dad, all business and spending NO quality time together.
ReplyDeleteI think Derick went to Oklahoma State university because his parents went there. He got a degree in Accounting, which is a useful profession and probably was recommended to him as such. Then he got involved with missionary work, went to Nepal and then Central America. His life views probably changed. He probably found it more suitable to do this kind of work.
DeleteWhen he was back from Nepal, he was getting married, and so he got a job to get paid and provide for his new family. Then the family still went on a mission in Central America, and they were back only to have a birth of their second child in the US. I think since then Derick was looking at some more suitable professions for him, and being a lawyer is more close to a missionary work as a lawyer in many areas is someone who defends their clients and stands by their rights. Since he already had success with getting an education in Accounting, the legal education is more suitable for his structured mind than lets say theology which is more theoretical. I'm actually very happy for Derick to have found himself in a legal field.
The Dillards returned to the US frequently during the time they were supposed to be missionaries in Central America. They were filmed on CO in the US including the gender reveal for Sam and lead up to Austin and Joy's wedding and also spent weeks in the US when Jinger got married. They actually spent equal amounts of time in NW Arkansas and Central America during that time before deciding to change course and permanently stay in the US.
DeleteTwo thumbs up for persuing a high education. They boys are cute.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to Derick! They share pics because people want to see their family , esp since they're not on tv anymore
ReplyDeleteI have horses and would.never put.my.kids on an unhaltered horse especially a draft horse like that
ReplyDeleteThere are a couple of pictures of me on the back of a mule when I was about 4. My uncle was holding the mule's bridle. Cute pictures are nice but I think you should use some common sense when taking them.
DeleteI totally agree with you. It is extremely dangerous for the kids to be sitting on a horse with no helmet! Also, the horse can spook at any second. A lot of horses do not like that many people surrounding them and sitting on them.
DeleteNo one I know (or eve have known) who owns or rides horses would ever have put two small children up on a horse like that, even for a few seconds to snap a picture. Even the best trained animals, with the calmest demeanors/dispositions can get spooked or just decide they don't like something that's going on around them (or with them). My well-trained, well-mannered, gentle, calm horse just decided one day at riding camp, to make a break for the fence...that was fun-NOT. No matter what attributes we project onto them, at the end of their day, they're still animals with a mind of their own and unpredictable in spite of us.
DeleteThe kids look good.
ReplyDeleteI agree with others who have said that most rising 2Ls have some kind of internship. It’s almost expected that you do. Plus it builds experience and connections - things that are absolutely vital after graduation. Someone with no summer experiences is less likely to be hired by a firm upon graduation.
ReplyDeleteThere's no indication of what Derrick will be doing this summer. Spending a day at a farm doesn't mean he's not doing an internship somewhere. However, he doesn't have a good track record of sticking with things. I hope he does what he needs to do with this endeavor and gets a good job after completing school.
DeleteMost people find time to do things with their kids after work and on weekends, I don’t understand why so many people are shocked to see Derick doing something with his family.
DeleteWho said they did it on a weekend? I see no indication that they went on a Saturday. Besides, any lawyer or summer intern typically works on the weekend and late at night. I would know - my husband is an attorney who regularly puts in 70-80 hours a week.
DeleteWell, I see no indication that they didn't do this on a Saturday. Besides, he may have a break between the end of the semester and the start date of his internship or summer job.
Delete
