Duggar Master Bedroom Facelift

Big families love big projects! If you follow our blog about the Bates family, stars of the reality TV show Bringing Up Bates, you've seen the Bates kids do multiple redecorating projects as surprises for their parents. They redecorated the entire first floor of their East Tennessee house, as well as Gil and Kelly's master bedroom.

Now, it's the Duggar siblings' turn to surprise their parents with a redecorating project. This one was very involved and took a week and a half. If you notice, they had to do quite a bit of actual renovating around the window to create a window seat. The Duggar brothers made the cabinets from scratch.

  1. They did a good job but its very drab and could use a pop of color. Using a neutral background is the way to go as you can change the accessories, soft furnishings etc to change the look, but to each their own.

    1. Yes. I think an accent wall with a brighter color would help.

    2. The room is depressing IMO. I don't like that type headboard as they become seedy and run down looking very quickly

    3. Anon 12:37 Most stuff sold today for homes becomes seedy and run down looking quickly. That's the point I guess, to make you want to go buy new before long. Fabrics and furniture woods are not what they used to be and things don't hold up any more. The house I grew up in had drapes my mother made with mill ends of fabric used for auto upholstery in the 1950's. The drapes were heavy as could be and wore like iron for 20 years, til we moved and left them for the next person. I've never felt such substantial fabric since. Upholstery fabrics today look good for 20 minutes, not 20 years, or until the first person sits down on them, whichever comes first.

    4. Anon 3:47 That is a good reason NOT to have an upholstered headboard. It's fairly inexpensive to replace throw pillows but a good headboard costs quite a bit. That's why I prefer a wood or metal one. They wear well and look good for much longer.

    5. Look at any home furnishings at Target or Wal-Mart. They're cheap and won't last long. Sad part is that the furniture sold by most furniture stores is the same way, only it costs more.

    6. I hate the fashion of different greys at the moment - after a busy day going into that bedroom wouldn't lift my spirits. It needs a pop of lemon or acid yellow opposed to ochre yellow.
Also I sadly noted the framed photos of Michelle and Jim-Bob hadn't been put back up - too big to put on the new shelves. There needs to be a bright canvas print/photo on wall behind the bed.

  2. I love the bookcases along side of the windows!
What a nice thing for the kids to do!

  3. Gray! Gray gray gray. I'm so tired of seeing GRAY houses with GRAY interiors and GRAY furnishings. It's like one big long dreary day when the sun won't come out. I'll be so glad when this gray phase disappears. It's as bad as the avocado green/gold/orange phase in the 70's or the Williamsburg blue/dusty rose/pastel peach phase of the 80's.

    1. Blue and dusty rose is also Victorian. Anyway I would prefer any shade of blue to gray

    2. I’m sorry you’re so upset

    3. I know. I thought the color scheme was rather bland, but since the Duggars like it, let it go.

      Delete
    4. Nothing is as bad as the 70s colors lol

      Delete
    5. So what colors do you like? You've eliminated GRAY, green, gold, orange, blue, pink and peach. That leaves us with white, black, yellow, red and brown.

      Delete
    6. 12:16 -- LOL

      Delete
    7. Hey, watch it with the comments about 80s colors -- LOL

      Delete
    8. I find the monotone very boring, but it's not MY room so if JB and Michelle like it then all is well. I remember those ugly avocado, yellow and copper appliances. They were awful, just as bad as those red and blue ones they were trying to sell us a few years ago. Now they're trying to thrust black appliances down our throats. Ugh.

    9. I can't stand gray either. It's so depressing. There are perfectly good shades of other colors (12:16) that aren't depressing like gray or visually shocking like bright orange. Substitute a nice light pastel blue for the gray or the white walls in those rooms above and they'd instantly be happier places to be. It would even go with the tan tile better. There are too many neutrals in that bathroom.

      Delete
    10. I've seen shades of gray used very well and can be a very pleasing if not overdone and accented well. I wouldn't use it in my own home because it wouldn't fit well with my furniture or woodwork. It's really about personal preferences anyway, isn't it? The beauty of paint is you can always change it!

    11. I agree I hate grey! (Us in England spell it with an 'e' not an 'a' !!)
Lavender, eau-de-nil, blush, are all gentle on the eye for wallcolour.

    12. Its clear as day, I sincerely think that anyone that makes a rude statement is not happy or content with their life. I can never imagine going on a site with other fans and saying anything unkind, why would I feel the need to do that, unless I wasn't fulfilled and unhappy with my life.So now we know and they need our prayers the most, so bless them allπŸ™πŸΏπŸ˜‡

  6. Looks like they have some grout cleaning and sealing to do, before they end up with a bigger problem with that floor. Hope that's not mold.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Some people choose to use a darker grout to begin with, so that stains aren't as evident. It matches certain color tiles better, too.

      Delete
    2. Perhaps you're right. I hadn't paid much attention to the floor because I thought it was very ugly. It looks like they either used a dark colored grout and just left it to its own devices or it's dirty.

      Delete
    3. The way part of that grout is lighter than the part in front of the shower does make it look like it gets wet too often and needs to be worked on. Where are all those handy house flipping kids?

      Delete
    4. Anon 7:04. Yes. People do use colored grout but it usually tones with the tile much better than the grout in the Duggar bathroom does.

      Delete
    5. I think they need to use some Kaboom on the grout and clean it up. lol

      Delete
    6. Have you ever seen the grout in the main part of the house? It's very dark and dirty in the footpaths. They proudly showed off how they have industrial floor cleaning machines (run by the kids of course) but it doesn't look like the grout is getting clean.

      Delete
    7. Anon 3:35. After having bought a house (years ago) that had been flipped I wouldn't do that again. Although it had passed the home inspection, the problems we encountered with the cheap and shoddy materials used made it a poor choice.

    1. Dear Commenter at 3:01 PM,

Please forgive us for selecting a comforter and pillows that are not to your taste. We sincerely apologize. We would like to take the opportunity to clarify, it is NOT fine that we have decorated a bed in a way you do not like. Not fine at all.

You see, we live to please those around us. We absolutely live to do things you like, dear commenter, and if you don’t like our bed so much that you had to take time out of your day to forever publish that dislike, well, we knew we had to make it right.

Please know that we will immediately be redoing this bedroom in a way you like. We want you to like it so much that you will not feel the need to tell the whole world you do not like it.

Please forgive us for our terrible mistake.

      Love,
      The Duggar family

    8. @4:50 No jumping. I just find it humorous that someone had to announce to the world that they didn’t like someone ELSE’S bedroom, so I made a humorous response back.

My husband has always felt the same way and prefers we not have a bunch of pillows like that on the bed. My friend likes throw pillows but doesn't have a large bedroom. The pillows go on the floor beside the bed, and one night her husband tripped on them, hit his head on the corner of the dresser, and wound up in the ER getting stitches.

      Delete
    2. Imagine if they had a pillow for each of the children/family 19 in all! (tee hee)

      Delete
    3. I have a few pillows on my bed -- not this any -- and you're right. They're a pain in the neck. But if you stripped all the stuff out of your house that's a pain to clean, dust, etc., it wouldn't look as nice.

      Delete
    4. I personally detest throw pillows ha ha. They look great but I end up throwing them on the floor then having to clean them up and organize later. I love seeing them in other peoples' homes where I don't have to do the work.

      Delete
    5. we don't do the "decorative" bunch of pillow set up in France. It's full of dust mites ...ugh
We have one or two pillows for each person and that's it.

  15. Looks way too monotone. And why do they have to copy everything the Bates do?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree. I think a colored bedspread with coordinating pillows and SOMETHING on that expanse of white wall above the bed would help.

      Delete
    2. Not really copying the Bates. They redid the master bathroom as a surprise quite a while ago.

      Delete
    3. It's the same gray trend that's been around for several years since a reality home remodel show made it popular. The Bates and Duggars are jumping on board, I guess. I live in a hot real estate market and it's already going out of style here.

  16. I think updating the master suite was very kind of the siblings, but I hope JB and Michelle had input so they would get something they liked. The bedroom was not at all to my taste. I dislike that style of headboard and I thought the color scheme was rather drab. If JB and Michelle like it then the project was a success.

  17. It is much improved! The less masculine, less severe look is really lovely. The window seat and book shelves are terrific ideas. One thing I don't especially like is the tall gray cupboard in the bathroom. I don't know what would be preferable. I was wondering if there was a white board on the door and some handles on all the doors, and maybe a drooping plant on top. That probably all together seems absurd, I don't know what else could they do? But overall the rooms are better looking now, very peaceful and soft. It would be a nice place for them to retire (lol)!

    1. I think the cabinet in the bathroom needs something to make it more interesting. Decorative handles maybe. Although the previous bed was rather overpowering, the new one is worse IMO. Then there's that large empty wall above it. The room needs something to liven it up a bit. All that gray makes me feel rather sad. Not the sort of room I'd want.

  24. So many negative comments about what was done out of love for these parents. I wonder how many parents would love for their kids to show them appreciation just once.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You have amazing kids! You have done a great job raising them! God bless you!

    ReplyDelete
  26. To all those with something negative to say when was the last time you did something nice for your parents or your kids did something nice for you. I think what the duggar kids did for their parents was amazing. Commenting on the color scheme they chose is just petty. By the way how much time and money did anyone commenting about the color scheme or furniture contribute. So keep your negative thoughts to yourself. Way to go duggar kids.

  27. Who puts photographs of themselves in the bathroom? Not a place for that IMO. These people seem to do that. Why would I want photos of my parents in my bathroom? Why do they?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Uh, no one put pictures of themselves in the bathroom. The kids apparently put up an old, sentimental picture of their parents in there, which is entirely appropriate since it's a private master bathroom. As far as I know, they don't have pictures of their parents in their own bathrooms, so not sure what you meant by that.

  34. What equally wonderful thing have the parents done for the kids lately?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes, I DEMAND PICTORAL PROOF of Michelle or Jim Bob doing something nice for their children!!!!! In fact, I demand EVERY PARENT EVERYWHERE to start posting pictures of social media and/or blogs of what wonderful things they do for their children!! No picture=it didn’t happen. AMIRIGHT?!?!?!?!

      Delete
    2. The parents don't have to do anything equally wonderful for their children. They love and care and provide a good home for their family. That in and of 'itself' is great! In return the children honour their parents.

      Delete
  35. Why can't people just say nice job and leave it at that? How many children would do this for their parents? Would it really be that hard to say something nice?? We all have our own preferences so no need to take something that was done out of love be so negative.
On that note, I don't care what design, color choices or what personal items are put on the walls,to the Duggar children
I say what a remarkable job you did on your parents bedroom, the love shows through it! I'm sure they are very proud!
