Grandma Duggar's 'New' House

Those who have been asking for new Counting On footage will enjoy this video. As a child, Jim Bob Duggar lived in a log cabin style home with his parents and sister Deanna Duggar. Grandma Duggar recently sold the property that it sat on, so her son and grandsons moved it to their property and are fixing it up as her residence.

  2. You really need to get up with TLC's IT Dept. and find out why your videos from them show up as black boxes (if at all), and won't play for a lot of readers. Readers who are using PC's that don't have issues with videos anywhere else online.

    3. It works for everyone who lives in the US, just not anywhere else (Holland here). Not sure what they can do about that.

    4. if you're not in the US you can't see it. It happened to me at first but i downloaded an extension for chrome which makes webpages believe you're browsing from the US and i was able to watch the videos. it's called hola

    5. It does not work for me and I live in the United States, and they could easily fix it so you can see the video even if you have an add blocker.

  9. Wow! That is beautiful! My mother recently moved to northern Michigan and bought a log home. That's wonderful that she can be close to the family.

  10. It's nice for Mary Duggar, but does anyone believe that laymen can do such big general construction work themselves without being a licensed contractor? One has to ALSO be a foundation expert, plumbing, electrical, structural engineer and have the ability to "sign on the plans". It also has to pass the county inspection codes. Their 'friend' the contractor, sure, is helping them, as he's the one with the license. Don't know how children like the Duggar boys and the older ones, who are not trained, and licenses can to such work. It's not that easy. They also had to obtain permission to put another residential structure on the acreage, which could be a zoning variance by the county. What was the cost of moving that structure? It would have been cheaper to build a new small house on the property, I believe.

    1. I've often wondered about the houses they "flip" and how many licensed contractors work on them. Around here, you would be hard-pressed to sell a house that had been fixed by someone not licensed, even if it did pass inspection. A house in my neighborhood couldn't sell & eventually the owners had to tear down a screen porch they had built themselves because it was barely legal and a sticking point in the sale. They hired a contractor to tear it down and put on a deck instead, and it sold!

    2. They (the children) have been taught by licensed contractors since they were little. It is something the Duggars wanted to instill in their children and you see now how beneficial it is. Also who said they have not obtain permits?! Why must so many on this blog be so negative about every little thing with this wonderful family?! Also it is not about what is cheaper - it is bringing a home that has memories and love in it to the land they now own. Come on give this family a break.

      Delete
    3. You do realize that contractors oversee the building of houses but everyone who does the actual physical work is not a licensed contractor, don't you? I am sure they were trained before any work began but working on houses is nothing new for the Duggars. They worked on their own house while it was being built along with the Bates' house and the houses they buy and sell. It may or may not have been cheaper to build a new house, but a new house wouldn't have the memories that the log cabin has. It looked like it was in pretty good shape, so why not keep it?

      Delete
    4. 2:27 Bah! hum-bug!! Don't be so negative, it's not becoming.

      Delete
    5. Back when the Duggars first had their house built, the kids helped because they wanted them to learn how to do that stuff. So they do have experience and they don't need a license to learn and help out.

      Delete
    6. My thoughts exactly! Would be nice to hear from the Duggars if and how they met all the codes and building regulations.

      Delete
    7. But they did it! I, despite all these difficulties they have to work out! Isn't that wonderful!

      Delete
    8. Negative or not, readers have legitimate questions that never get answered.

      Delete
    9. Not really, they live in a rural area, there aren't as many codes to follow and they generally don't have inspections. My husband is a contractor and he see's people all the time doing their own thing out in the country. He really likes it when 2 or 3 years down the road he gets a call because it was done wrong and he gets to fix it.

      Delete
    10. Anon @ 2:27 I agree with your post.
To be really skilled in any trade takes proper training and years of apprenticeship. Being fully qualified and licenced and being able to lend a hand and carry out instructions are two totally different things, and saying this isn't being negative, just truthfull. The expression 'jack of all trades master of none comes to mind'.

    11. Having a brother who's a Grade A Contractor, I have to agree with the Original poster (Anonymous April 26, 2017 at 2:27 PM). I'd also add that with insurance regulations being what they are, my brother wouldn't allow multiple kids under 18 on any of his job sites, friends or not. If this is being portrayed as a "Duggar" project, it's disingenuous at best. Preparing a construction site, moving a house, preparing a foundation, setting the house, plumbing for the electrical/water and sewer is all professional work. Violating codes= big fines/loss of Contractor's license/both. If this is being sold as the Duggars did this themselves, without disclosing all that the contractor and his team/his subs did, that's just lying.

      Delete
    12. Totally agree, 12:55. Just because you have "training" doesn't make you a licensed (and insured) contractor, able to do work that meets code. For years, my husband was an electrician on a nuclear-powered sub in the Navy. He has both his Navy training and a college degree in nuclear engineering. But he won't change a light switch in our home. We use a licensed electrician for everything electrical around the house. That way, everything stays up to local codes and the contractor assumes all liability for the work, we don't.

      Delete
    13. Living in a rural area means fewer codes to follow and no inspections? Note to self: Never buy a house in a rural area...

      Delete
    14. 8:32- I live in a rural area and I can assure you there are the local/state building codes to follow, including inspections. There are also zoning laws that are enforced. Whether it's erecting an outbuilding, additional living space, or selling a land parcel- there are hoops to jump through.

      Delete
    15. It's also possible that they just don't mention all of the details. They wouldn't be able to do a project like this if all the requirements aren't met.

  11. I know this was staged for a video but I was wondering, do the Duggars hug and kiss to greet each other? - no one approached Grandma or their aunt for a greeting. Wouldn't fly in my family!!

    1. How do you know it was staged? xD
I mean, if you knew that, then you should know everything else, right? What is it like living with them?

      Delete
    2. Anon @12:05 Josiah recently stated in an interview that they have to repeat scenes when filming, and like all reality shows they stage things to film. The cameras could not possibly just happen to be around at all the right times. The original poster only asked a question, it wasn't rude or offensive so why the mean spirited sarcastic reply?

      Delete
    3. Oh my gosh! By "staged," I meant that they were making a video purposefully, to show what they were doing. Grandma Mary and the aunt probably just didn't happen to show up, it was part of the plan. All I asked was if hugging and kissing between kids/parents/grandma/aunts was something they did. Both of my grandmas were very affectionate - if I didn't greet them with a BIG hug and kiss, I'd be in trouble! 😘

      Delete
    4. It is different when you live together. Since Grandma lived with them, I am sure they got used to not greeting her every time they saw her. My children always greeted my parents when we saw them, but now we all live in one house. We see each other so often that we don't greet each other every time.

    1. They upload to YouTube after a few days. They keep it exclusive the first few days by putting it in whatever format this is -- makes it more difficult to embed in blogs and news sites, so the story is out on TLCs terms for a while before the blogs hit it.

    2. Wouldn't all us older people love to have a family like the Duggars, they care so much for Grandma. I'm pretty sure life with the family was a blessing for Mary and no one was teling her what to do, but it is time for change and I'm pretty sure they will still be there for her. God Bless you Duggars, the world would be a better place if we had more families like you!

      Delete
    3. Why would you say something like that? That doesn't even make sense.

      Delete
    4. Why would they do that? They moved the house there specifically for her, so I am sure they won't try to push her out. Jessa has no say so over her grandmother.

    1. Sounds like it was Grandma's decision to sell the land. I wonder if maybe she rented it out and that was part of her income or something like that? Then she decided to sell and the kids were like "Grandma we could move the house for you!" ;)

  30. Hi Readers,

This is for those having difficulty with the video. Are you watching from inside the United States? Most TLC videos can only be viewed from a US IP address. We recommend trying a different browser (our favorites are Mozilla Firefox and Chrome; Internet Explorer is unreliable) and a different device (laptops/desktops are best). We also suggest you update your Adobe Flash Player software (https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/). TLC usually uploads their clips to YouTube a few weeks after they are uploaded to TLC.com, and we always try to share them with those who can't view the originals.

    Hope this helps! :)

  31. Does anyone else think Jim Bob was maybe a lonely kid?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Regarding the contractor issue: How do any of you think a mason learns his craft? Or a plumber? Or any tradesman? By apprenticing, which is what these Duggar kids are doing. They're supervised by a licensed contractor, and the project will be inspected by the city upon completion.

Haven't you ever had an electrician or plumber come out to your house and bring his assistant. That's his apprentice. The contractor you hired is responsible, but the apprentice is gaining hours of work experience under his direction.

It's strange to me that people want to criticize every little thing this family does without even taking the time to think it through. Just some advice for life in general -- don't be so quick to form an opinion just because you have certain feelings about a person or subject. Form an objective opinion based on the FACTS. It will serve you in every aspect of your life.

And P.S. I come from a family of general contractors.

  34. The Duggars usually give the impression that they are 'doing the work themselves' and not assisting a licensed professional. That is why they draw these types of comments. Didn't they say that 'the contractor was helping THEM?' No, they were helping the contractor.

  35. Since Mary DUGGAR IS A DUGGAR, it's strange to me that she would have referred to her son's house and property as being close to the DUGGARS. She is the one who made Jim Bob a Duggar in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I guess Deanna could do her own laundry.
It is Mary Duggar who is the matriarch of this branch of the Duggar family, not Michelle. Upon Mary Duggar's passing, Deanna would be the matriarch as she will be the BLOOD FEMALE DUGGAR, senior.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Mary is the matriarch of her descendants. After her passing, Deanna would be the matriarch of her descendants (Amy on down) and Michelle would be the matriarch of her many descendants.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Some kids helping out on the 'side' and it being their own personal project does not make them apprentices. They are merely using the contractor's license to get the job done regarding permits and inspections. I'm sure some cash has changed hands between this contractor and Jim Bob for his time and expertise. No one continues to simply give away their livelihood over and over again to a family who continually seems to need 'help' and assistance in getting things done.
It's an insult to real apprentices who train officially along side masters of the industry daily for years and years, not assist on personal project as they come up.
