It's official! Jessa and Ben have decided what to call Baby Seewald: Spurgeon Elliot. The happy couple shares the meaning behind the powerful name in the following video:
This preachers last name was Spurgeon. It seems like a rather unusual first name to me, but to each his own. Maybe they'll call him Elliot. That's what I would do.
WOW! Not to be rude because i LOVE all of yall but. No wonder you. Waited a week to reveal his name. Love you though! Hes beautiful and will be very loved P.s. maybe it will grow on me.
I actually love the name...just hope he loves it as he gets older.... Knew Jessa would come up with something really different but as I said I love it..
How unique...didn't see that one coming, i bet no one guessed it , or even came close. He is just adorable, they look so happy and complete. I can't wait for their special. Blessings☺
at last a name for baby Seewald we thought it would be different and it sure is...I have to say it would be easy to say is it was the other way round but at least it wont be shortened...bless you all
Oh what a wonderful name! I love the use of unusual names...my brothers and sisters all have unique names and it's honestly great to not have the typical names. So happy for the Seewalds and can't wait to watch their family grow:)
I agree with you, Laura! That being said, I'm still happy for Jessa and Ben. Their baby is beautiful! Congratulations to them both, and for both the Duggar and Seewald families.
Ok I'm not hating, I absolutely love the Duggars, but I burst out laughing at Spurgeon. It's so unfortunate... I would've called him Elliot Spurgeon, Quincy Elliot or Elliot Quincy. It's not my choice but poor kid. If I was him I would go by the middle name. If he goes to public school the bullies will get him for sure... Bless him No hate it's just my honest opinion. I'll probably grow to love it like I did with Isreal!
Love it! He's beautiful. Congratulations to ALL of you. Hugs to the WHOLE Duggar/Seewald families. May God's blessings follow you wherever you may go. Prayers for all of you and the rest of the families. Lois in Kansas
Well Jessa & Ben he is beautiful & I am happy for all of you & I am a huge Duggar fan and I miss you all, & my prayers & thoughts are with your family for all you have been through but God will make things right, Love from Debbie Durham in Alliston Ontario Canada,
Awesome. I love the meaning of it. He is so adorable. I'm glad Jessa is feeling better and she looks better in the video. In the picture of them all she looked exhausted. Love you guys.
Wow, what a big name for such a little (big) guy! So glad Jessa and Ben finally decided on a name and what a name! Definitely a name to live up to, so powerful! Congratulations to Jessa and Ben on Spurgeon Elliott Seewald! May God bless you little family! Lily.
Totally love Jessa but not a fan of the name they picked. Happy for them and I am sure we will all get use to it. P.S. I named my kid Hadassah (after Esther in the Bible) and it took awhile for people to warm-up to it. I LOVE it though :D
Nice, strong name. I know another Spurgeon who is a well liked pastor in Canada. I know a couple who had a baby girl in June....just after Elisabeth Elliott died and named her Elisabeth....after Elisabeth Elliott.
WOW!!! I wasn't expecting such a unique name. He will spend his whole life correcting people on ow to spell and pronounce his name. For a couple with such popular names it was a surprising choice.
The name brought tears to my eyes. Charles Spurgeon and Jim and Elisabeth Elliot have had a tremendous impact on my life. It is an absolutely lovely name!!!
Oh Lord! That's so terrible! I'm laughing as I type this because I'm just in shock. Why would you do that to a kid? He's a beautiful boy and I thank God that he's healthy and that Jessa is healthy but that name! Yikes!
That is what makes waiting for a name more interesting It would be very confusing if we all used the same names over and over again or they could have used Benson some other there are all the different countries do such as use different god names there are plenty of them we seem to deserve them our pets ou pets
Charles Spurgeon was a great man of God. However, not a name I would select for my child. Parents should really think about children's name before they name them. Children must grow up and live with these given names. I am pretty sure he will love his nickname "Quincy".
Well......far be it for me to criticise a baby's name but come on!! Spurgeon!! I am Scottish and believe me, it sounds terrible in a Scottish accent lol. Nevertheless, I wish them all the best of course. x
Hi Lily and Ellie, Thank you for your posts, I love hearing about the Duggars life. I was just noticing that you don't have Spurgeon Elliot up on the top of the page yet with the rest of the family yet...
That's awesome!! I love that it's different and not crazy, difficult to pronounce or super common! I think it evidences Jessa's spunk and Ben outreach passion. I wouldn't have chosen it for any of my sons but I think it fits the Seewald family awesomely. Congrats!!
Hopefully they have a nickname picked out for the little guy or just continue to use Quincy. I can just imagine hearing his name being called out. "Spurgeon where are you".
Because that's not what they wanted to name him. Ben and Jessa put a great deal of thought into choosing a meaningful name for *their* child. I feel people posting about how "terrible" or "strange" etc they think the name is are not being very kind or thoughtful. The naming of one's child is a personal decision and should not be open for public debate.
Now y'all can officially update the header! I'm so happy for Jessa and Ben, they're such a beautiful couple with a precious little boy! I love his unique name, it suits him perfectly! ❤️
I like the new header for your Duggar Blog. There is a kid named Spuregon in the Anne of Green Gables books. Somebody should get them those books for their library.
When is the TLC special about Jessa (her baby, Spurgeon) and Jill? Are they going to do a special on Bringing Up Bates about the Jinger and Lawson courtship?
What a wonderful, unique name. A lot of people seem to think that because the name is a little different, Jessa and Ben shouldn't have chosen it, which seems a little silly to me.
P.S. Lily & Ellie, I love the new header and color scheme! :) Thank you for maintaining such a wonderful blog.
As others have said, it wouldn't have been MY first choice, but he's not my child either. People often grow into their names and I expect Spurgeon will too. Gods bless him and his family.
Stop with all the rude and horrible comments! Would you guys really tell Jessa and Ben to their faces that you hate what they named their son and think he should go by his middle name? If not, you certainly shouldn't be posting it online. If so, how would you feel if, when you introduced your new baby to your friends, they grimaced and begged you to call him or her by a different name? Think about what you're posting. Is it building people up or tearing them down? Does what you say or write lead others closer to Jesus Christ, or does it distract them from Him. I was certainly not uplifted when I read some of those hateful comments. What would Jesus say?
Agreed! Well said! I am happy for them and love that they don't let negative opinions stop them from being who they were created to be. After all, we should be aiming to please God and not man. It is a perfect name for their child because they carefully and thoughtfully chose it. He is a blessed baby!
I don't think jessa expects him to go by his first name all the time. She mentioned that he will go by both his first name and middle and Quincy. Honestly it is very unusual and people may not understand why he was named that and don't understand the significance personally I would not name a child that but it is their choice and it has a good meaning and intention behind it. Regardless of name he is a beautiful child and its a beautiful time in their life and he's such a blessing. people seem to be disagreeing about the name but always end it on something positive and that he is such a blessing.
One of the greatest men I ever knew was Surgeon Leonard and we called him Spud . I love his name ! A great name for your beautiful baby and kids may find his name and the story behind it interesting .
Wow, y'all got that header up there right quick.I love the pic of Isreal, he has always looked older beyond his years, even at birth. Thanks for all the updates☺
Spurgeon is very different if it mean little twig that is also different what will you all be calling him Elliot or Quincy or spur he is to small and beautiful to carry sutch a long and stong name right now he is a baby .
I don't think it is. She or he was just saying that its different but it is a very grownup name and he is a baby. My father has a very adult name but went by a nickname as a kid because he was a kid. She or he isn't saying its a bad name just very grownup one.
They could have gone with Charles Elliot or Elliot Spurgeon I think he will go by his middle name or like jessa said Quincy to!! Anyhow he's adorable and I love Elliot!
I think Spurgeon Elliot will fit him just fine. He's so beautiful and adorable God bless you all. I love you ,and you're in my prayers and thoughts all the time.
Very cool name, very unique!! You'll have to custom order anything with his name on it or make it, but it's nice to have a unique name, because no one will get you confused with anyone else.
Comment 48: I totally agree with you! It is not our baby!!! Jesus would not like it if he saw us making fun of the beautiful baby Spurgeon! It is a wonderful name after a wonderful man! :) Please be nice. WWJD
I love Spurgeon Elliot's name! I would even call him by both names...I think it sounds good and what a fine pair of shoes to fill for both men. You watch, other peoples' sons will come up being named Spurgeon. It's just a matter of time. It is a fine strong name...worthy of a fine Christian boy to grow into. He will wear it just fine.
I named both of my children every day names and my in laws didn't Li like lt saying that the name were not strong enough for boys and both boys like their names and they are pillars of our comunity
Beasitiful baby, Ben and Jessa enjoy every moment time goes by fast.you both made this baby and when the time is right you can decide to make another. There're is no gift involved it is nature.
I wanted to congratulate Ben and Jessa but first I must say some of these posts astound me. Kindness matters. Where are our manners? This is a little newborn. His parents named him. Naming a baby is not a public opinion contest. I think because they are public figures we forget they are human. Let's respect the dignity of all.
I named my kids after family members who inspired us and we looked up to but if it was to be someone outside the family it would have been Walt Disney. He inspired me more than than any other outside influence Great family man
Please stop trying to get us to buy People Magazine, it is such and immoral magazine. The images are so very indecent. As a Christian, I don't understand the Duggars love affair with People. Would the Duggars ever purchase this magazine if they were not in it? Please put this on the website. It is an honest Christian point of view.
Since its such an immoral magazine ,good thing they are shining a light into the darkness there, right? The people who choose that sort of magazine need to hear what they have to say. A christian perspective should care about the eternal well being of others.
Moody Spurgeon? Sorry, Anonymous, you've got your preachers mixed up. Try Dwight L. Moody and Charles Spurgeon! And please, folks, can't we give a couple the right to name their baby whatever they so desire without picking the name to bits? They spent a LOT of time working with this name and it is loaded with meaning for them. So lay off! "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!"
Beautiful baby, and every couple has the right to pick a name! Similar to another comment, I feel it is wrong to encourage people to buy People Magazine and to watch TLC. They invite these media outlets into their homes to photograph and film them, yet the finished products (magazine article and tv show) are off limits in their own homes. Makes no sense.
The name is really unique. It takes a while to get used to it :)
I live in Finland and the name brings to my mind a finnish word "spurgu" which means a an alcoholic :( So Quincy or Elliot would be a great name to call a cute little baby.
Considering all of the unusual names that people name their children, isn't it odd that everyone chooses to go after Ben and Jessa's child? The Duggars have openly stood for their faith for years, so no matter what, people will always attack them from every side, even it's their new baby's name. We're acting more like babies than the little life that we're already attacking.
MAZEL TOV and Best wishes on the birth of your beautiful son...may you all share in the joy of bringing this darling child into the world......wishing all of you peace and Shalom always:) Mia
On the one hand I understand the concept of a namesake. On the other hand naming a baby after a person or three people who had extraordinary accomplishments does fit the definition ofpretentious. Godly people are supposed to goto the right so which of these is they right
Thanks Jessa and Ben, that made me cry! I always wanted kids and I also had chosen very meaningful names. This is beautiful. If you have another boy, feel free to use one of "my" names, Patrick Samuel. He was to be named after St. Patrick, missionary to the Irish (my husband's family is Scots-Irish) and Samuel who also, when he heard the voice of God, listened and responded. May God bless you both and little Spurgeon. May he, through the power of the Holy Spirit, "live up to" his name.
Congratulations Jessa and Ben. Welcome baby Spurgeon Elliot. May God bless your famnily. Jessa you are an outstanding role model for other women, showing that you can be both a Godly and strong woman. May the three of you, in the security of God's hand, have a wonderful and blessed life together. Peace.
Naming our children is an honor for us,as parents, so I believe he'll grow into his name, just as we all did. He'll know his parents put time and meaning behind their choice.
lol...my sister and I ate one pineapple, Ouch! She probably had a sore mouth after all that pineapple acid. So glad that Jessa and Spurgeon are doing well. God Bless your family.
What a precious little man baby. Jessa and Ben congratulatiions. It feels my heart with such joy to watch young families grow. May he always walk in the light of our Lorder Saviour.
My son name is Adrian Michael and we call him Michael so they could call him Elliot, but I do agree with some of you they could have flopped the name around so Elliot was first bc if he goes off to collage or does go to a public school he is gonna get teased I would know I was teased as a child and still am bc of my name :-(
Thanks for leaving your comments! We answer as many of your questions as we can, but due to the number of comments we receive daily, we are unable to answer every one. Our aim is to post all points of view, but we do not post anything that is profane, insulting, derogatory, or in poor taste.
Call him Eli as a nickname
ReplyDeleteWhat great namesakes! So, will they call him Spurgeon, Elliot, or Quincy? :)
ReplyDeleteThis preachers last name was Spurgeon. It seems like a rather unusual first name to me, but to each his own. Maybe they'll call him Elliot. That's what I would do.

ReplyDeleteI like the name Elliot. It's my cousin's name. I think they should have used that as the first name. Spurgeon would make a better middle name.
ReplyDeleteSpurgeon ??? He is a beautiful baby. Best wishes to your family.
ReplyDeleteThe name Spurgeon is a Scandinavian name meaning little twig.
ReplyDeleteCharles Spurgeon was a great man of God. However, not a name I would select for my child. Parents should really think about children's name before they name them. Children must grow up and live with these given names. I am pretty sure he will love his nickname "Quincy".

ReplyDeleteMarilyn

DeleteWhy not Charles Elliott Seewald? Were they worried no one would know they named him after Spurgeon. Does it matter that people know?
ReplyDeleteIt matters to them
DeleteThey'll probably call him Spurgie.

ReplyDeleteHe's not your baby and it's not your choice.
DeleteHe is absolutely beautiful...loving your choice of names!
ReplyDeleteSpurgeon is very different if it mean little twig that is also different what will you all be calling him Elliot or Quincy or spur he is to small and beautiful to carry sutch a long and stong name right now he is a baby .

ReplyDeleteAnonymous 39. Jinger and Lawson are not in a courtship. That's a rumor. Lawson is dating my cousins daughter.
ReplyDeleteWhat's her name? When are they announcing that?
DeleteDating or courting?
DeleteCongratulations!!
ReplyDeleteI, too, wonder if they will call him Quincy. He's beautiful and I wish this sweet family all the best that life has to offer.

ReplyDeleteHow absolutely rude. Do you have children? How would you like have your baby mocked. Please be kind.
I named both of my children every day names and my in laws didn't Li like lt saying that the name were not strong enough for boys and both boys like their names and they are pillars of our comunity
DeleteBeasitiful baby, Ben and Jessa enjoy every moment time goes by fast.you both made this baby and when the time is right you can decide to make another. There're is no gift involved it is nature.
DeleteI wanted to congratulate Ben and Jessa but first I must say some of these posts astound me. Kindness matters. Where are our manners? This is a little newborn. His parents named him. Naming a baby is not a public opinion contest. I think because they are public figures we forget they are human. Let's respect the dignity of all.
ReplyDeleteWell said! Thank you for posting your comment. Kindness matters!
DeleteI named my kids after family members who inspired us and we looked up to but if it was to be someone outside the family it would have been Walt Disney. He inspired me more than than any other outside influence Great family man
DeletePlease stop trying to get us to buy People Magazine, it is such and immoral magazine. The images are so very indecent. As a Christian, I don't understand the Duggars love affair with
ReplyDeletePeople. Would the Duggars ever purchase this magazine if they were not in it? Please
put this on the website. It is an honest Christian point of view.
Since its such an immoral magazine ,good thing they are shining a light into the darkness there, right? The people who choose that sort of magazine need to hear what they have to say. A christian perspective should care about the eternal well being of others.
DeleteI am a christian and I read that magazine. It's not your place to judge.
DeleteGreat name, lovely family! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteHe is so cute!!! I like the name Elliot.
ReplyDeleteMoody Spurgeon? Sorry, Anonymous, you've got your preachers mixed up. Try Dwight L. Moody and Charles Spurgeon! And please, folks, can't we give a couple the right to name their baby whatever they so desire without picking the name to bits? They spent a LOT of time working with this name and it is loaded with meaning for them. So lay off! "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all!"
ReplyDeleteThat is nice how you put a lot of thought into naming your baby. Beautiful name Jessa and Ben and your baby is just precious.
ReplyDeleteHandsome little man. He's blessed by having parents that will guide him in the ways of God. His name is an honor to those he was named after.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful baby, and every couple has the right to pick a name! Similar to another comment, I feel it is wrong to encourage people to buy People Magazine and to watch TLC. They invite these media outlets into their homes to photograph and film them, yet the finished products (magazine article and tv show) are off limits in their own homes. Makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you're thinking of Moody Spurgeon MacPherson, the fictional character from the Anne of Green Gables series.
ReplyDeleteRight! And the joke was that he couldn't grow up to be anything but a preacher with a name like that to live up to.
DeleteWow !!! That was not the name u was expecting. But such an adorable and meaningful name , for an adorable an cute baby :)
ReplyDeleteThe name is really unique. It takes a while to get used to it :)
ReplyDeleteI live in Finland and the name brings to my mind a finnish word "spurgu" which means a an alcoholic :( So Quincy or Elliot would be a great name to call a cute little baby.
Aww, their baby is adorable!
ReplyDeleteSpurgeon is a very different name, I would not have guessed they'd use it.
Moody Spurgeon was a character on the television series "Road to Avonlea". Charles Spurgeon was the preacher from the 1800's/
ReplyDeleteConsidering all of the unusual names that people name their children, isn't it odd that everyone chooses to go after Ben and Jessa's child? The Duggars have openly stood for their faith for years, so no matter what, people will always attack them from every side, even it's their new baby's name. We're acting more like babies than the little life that we're already attacking.
ReplyDeleteI don't like how Jedidiah & Jeremiah are on different lines in the cover photo since they are twins.
ReplyDeleteI also preferred all the grandkids at the end after Josie, so it would stay in birth order.
ReplyDeleteBy living their lives in the spotlight, they are opening themselves up to people's opinions. You can't have one without the other.
ReplyDelete:O !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, someone knows my family history and hopefully people can spell it correctly
ReplyDeleteMAZEL TOV and Best wishes on the birth of your beautiful son...may you all share in the joy of bringing this darling child into the world......wishing all of you peace and Shalom always:) Mia
ReplyDeleteOn the one hand I understand the concept of a namesake. On the other hand naming a baby after a person or three people who had extraordinary accomplishments does fit the definition ofpretentious. Godly people are supposed to goto the right so which of these is they right
ReplyDeleteThanks Jessa and Ben, that made me cry!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations JESSA and BEN, I THINK IT IS A BEAUTIFUL NAME AND THE MEANING BEHIND MAKE IT MORE SPECIAL. GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Jessa and Ben. Welcome baby Spurgeon Elliot. May God bless your famnily. Jessa you are an outstanding role model for other women, showing that you can be both a Godly and strong woman. May the three of you, in the security of God's hand, have a wonderful and blessed life together. Peace.
ReplyDeleteSpurgeon is a fine name!
ReplyDeleteNaming our children is an honor for us,as parents, so I believe he'll grow into his name, just as we all did. He'll know his parents put time and meaning behind their choice.
ReplyDeletelol...my sister and I ate one pineapple, Ouch!
ReplyDeleteShe probably had a sore mouth after all that pineapple acid.
So glad that Jessa and Spurgeon are doing well. God Bless your family.
Wow!! Love the name and the meaning
ReplyDeleteA rose by any other name is just as sweet. It is a very unusual name I have to agree, but it is a name
ReplyDeleteWhat a precious little man baby. Jessa and Ben congratulatiions. It feels my heart with such joy to watch young families grow. May he always walk in the light of our Lorder Saviour.
ReplyDeleteMy son name is Adrian Michael and we call him Michael so they could call him Elliot, but I do agree with some of you they could have flopped the name around so Elliot was first bc if he goes off to collage or does go to a public school he is gonna get teased I would know I was teased as a child and still am bc of my name :-(
ReplyDeleteI don't like the name Spurgeon. Children will call him surgeon. Cute baby and lovely family.
