Medical Update on Derick's Mom

Several readers have requested an update on Derick's mom, Cathy Byrum, so here it is. :)

On April 10th of last year, two weeks after Jill Duggar (now Jill Dillard) got engaged to Derick Dillard, Cathy was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Now, almost ten months later, Cathy is doing exceptionally well. She recently had a PET scan and a bone marrow biopsy, both of which came back clear. She will have another doctor's appointment in two months but will not require future scans unless symptoms reappear.

A week before Jill and Derick's wedding, Cathy's oncologist did not expect her to survive another day, but she proved him wrong and even made it to the wedding. Cathy's story is nothing short of a miracle. Jill says that Baby Dilly, due in less than seven weeks, cannot wait to meet his grandma!

Jill Dillard, Derick Dillard, and Cathy Byrum visit Grandma Vergie,
Cathy's mother who passed away in November 2014

  2. Dear Lilly and Ellie, that's wonderful news for all of them! A question: One thing I've been wondering for a long time is where Josiah is. He's rarely seen on TV and photos. What is he doing these days?
    Thanks.

  6. I'm so pleased that she is doing so well. But I wish the outcome for my darling husband had been the same he sadly passed away from cancer on the 22nd of October last year and just 11 weeks later I lost my daddy so in a short space of time I have lost two of the most important men in my life.

  7. So happy about her recovery! Hopefully she continues to live a healthy lifestyle (all the sugar the little girls ate at their sugar party is NOT food that is recommended for people with health concerns as all that sugar and carbohydrate has negative effects on the body. I have read that some recovered when she eliminated the carbs from their diets.) Obviously Cathy is doing something right and I hope she gets the supports from those around her and they create an environment of the very best health choices for her and she is not always running against a bad habit current around herself. More power to her!

  12. Im sure you didnt mean it this way, but the "she proved him wrong!" comes off a little antagonistic towards the doctor! Im sure the doctor was thrilled she did so much better than the prognosis showed. Glad to see Cathy is doing well!

I would love to hear Carhy telling her story on TLC 19 kids and Counting.
She too, is such an inspiration.
I think Derick's marriage to Jill was a special gift from God to her.

  29. That is great news. The power of prayers do work. I strongly believe in that. God keep Derrick's mom cancer free. I will continue to pray for her for you and your entire family. Best of luck and wishing you much happiness with the birth of your baby. May God Bless everyone.

  30. Anonymous 29, do you only rejoice in prayers being answered favorably for Christians? All favorable responses that are asked from the Almighty Father are miraculous and should be appreciated. The prayer and request from a Jewish person, who believes in the same Creator as you do, should be rejoiced in also, by all.
BTW, even though I am not a big fan of the Duggars, I am very happy that Derick's mother is well and I pray she stays that way. The Dillard/Byrum family has experienced more than their share of heartache in losing family members. Stay well, Cathy B!

  31. How AWESOME! God is truly blessing her, first by guiding her son to a caring, compassionate woman to become his bride, then a honeymoon grandchild and now with an awesome prognosis.

  42. So glad Cathy is doing well and will soon hold her first grandchild! It is probably a little bitter sweet since her mom (Derick's grandmom) will not be there for her great-grandchild. Praise the Lord for Cathy's renewed good health. Love on that grandbaby, Cathy! Cherish every moment....they moments fly by. xoxo

  49. Does anyone know about Derick's other grandparents? I know Grandma Vergie just passed away, but what about his maternal grandpa and his Dillard grandparents. Also, what aunts, uncles and cousins does he have? That is family too...I'm sure they are happy for him and would like to meet and know his children too.

  50. I am elated Derick's mom is doing great, but as one that has faced a close family member near death, it got kind of tiresome to me to hear from all the people that were praying for her were that God would (1) produce a miracle and keep her on this earth, NEVER that (2) take her home to Heaven. I heard this same thing when learning my granddaughter would have difficulties. The question I have for those prayer warriors is this: If God knows from the day you were conceived how long you will walk the face of this earth and knows when you will leave it, what affect do your prayers have? The prayers to me should be to help the inflicted one accept it and to help the family deal with God's will. That is a contradiction I find--if God knows when we will be born and when we will die--what does prayer have to do with it?
