Dillards Make Divorce More Difficult

Tune in to TLC tonight at 8:00pm ET PT/7:00pm CT for a two-hour special of 19 Kids and Counting, featuring the wedding of Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard. Here are a few tidbits of information that might interest you:

1. Jill and Derick chose to enter a Covenant Marriage, an option offered to couples in Arkansas, Arizona, and Louisiana. Couples that sign a Covenant Marriage License must seek counseling prior to marriage. Should they experience marital problems, they must seek counseling and engage in a longer period of separation before a divorce can be granted.

"I signed their covenant marriage certificate," Derick's mom, Cathy Byrum, 57, told PEOPLE after Jill and Derick's wedding. "It was so special. But it wouldn't matter if they chose that type of marriage certificate or not, those two would still have a covenant marriage."

2. Stephen Jones--Derick's former college roommate and a groomsman in the wedding--approved of Jill and Derick's first kiss, which took place at the altar.

"It looked like he had been thinking about that first kiss and how he was going to do it for quite some time," Jones, 25, told PEOPLE. "He dipped her pretty smoothly, I thought. And he was able to connect on the lips – that's what we are looking for."

3. Tonight's wedding episode is sure to include plenty of surprises.

Derick’s mom is right. It doesn’t matter which type of marriage certificate you have. ALL of us are joined into a marriage covenant when we take our vows according to the Word of God.

Today most people don’t want to study it but marriage is for life and remarriage is adultery unless your spouse dies. Most pastors are not warning people today of the Words of Jesus on this subject.

“Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery." --Jesus Christ

“A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 7:39

“Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.” Hebrews 13:4

Scripture clearly slams the door shut on remarriage.

  3. I have always appreciated the high biblical standards by which your family chooses to live. Thank you for being a family that chooses to follow Christ's standards, regardless of what others may think or say. You are truly a blessing and example to us all. ~ Pastor Andre

  4. I like that! More states should do that. Marriage is a sacred. The marital garden must be tended every day including through the difficult times. How else do couples get to share a 50th wedding anniversary? Building a solid foundation is cruical. Too many people only want to share the good times and walk out for the bad times. That is the devil. Anything worth while is worth fighting for! Love and marraige is worth fighting for! Date each other always! Respect your ground rules for communicating even during the tough times. The Federal and State have made a mockery of the marriage. Therefore only making more money for divorce court; It is 50 billion dollar a year industry!

  5. That is pretty neat! This sounds pretty similar to LDS temple marriages, which are also covenant marriages, that make it more difficult to obtain a divorce. You have to go through several ecclesiastical leaders first, and are even required to reasonably write a letter to the First Presidency of the church in order to break the marriage sealing between the husband and wife. It makes it that much more worth it to make a marriage work :)

  6. I don't like the title of this post. It's not about making divorce more difficult, it's about making marriage more meaningful.

    1. I completely agree. Focus on the positive, the negative.

  7. I never heard of a covenant marriage before, but I love the concept of it. Wish it were available in my state.

  8. That doesn't make sense to me.... They have spent so much time getting to know each other in a non-physical way and so on, surely they don't expect to have marriage problems? So why sign a special contract? Don't you think that putting so many safeguards in place makes it look like they expect to have marriage problems?
If your faith is making your relationship so strong, why the need to have the law force you to go to counseling? Surely they don't need the law for that, if they value their marriage they would get counseling anyway, right?
This just doesn't make sense to me. I personally would never want a divorce and I would do everything I can to avoid it, but surely I don't need a special contract for that? #confused

    1. Every marriage has problems. There is marital bliss, and also marital blisters. The difference with a covenant marriage is that when the difficult times come, it's easier to work through than to throw in the towel.

  9. Regarding the covenant marriage- what happens in case of an abusive spouse? (Not talking about the Dillard's or anyone else specific. I have never heard about a covenant marriage and am wondering what exactly does it mean)

  10. I have been watching reruns all day and i thought of a question that has never been addressed. We all know that the wedding was Jills first kiss, but what about Derrick? I would say thats it none of our buisness but they made it ours when they told us about Jills, so whats the difference. If that question is never addressed then we know the answer, they never speak of it because he probably has.If it was his first then they would be saying as much as Jills.By the way there is absolutely nothing wrong with it if he did.

  11. It seems if the couple are as Christian as they seem to be that things won't ever come to this. But it is good for them that they really think about handling serious rifts and mending them. I wish them the very best and I hope this is always just a piece of paper sitting on a shelf getting dusty. Meanwhile their Bible never gets dusty. I need to follow Jesus too and get my Bible out more!

  14. I am just wondering why Jana and John-David not in relationships? Josh is married, Jill is married and Jessa in a few days? Are they any other Duggars in relationships we haven't heard about. Thanks for a great show. Also wondering why you don't come to Colorado and speak. You come and ski. Thanks.

  15. I have watched the Duggars from the beginning and just adore their family! I wish that one day I could meet them all and let them know just how much I appreciate their show. I don't watch much tv, but theirs is a MUST SEE! I record it Tuesday evening and watch it with my 9 year old daughter on Wednesday after we home school. I hope and pray that she (and her siblings) will want to save her first kiss for her wedding day! I thought Jill & Derick's wedding was BEAUTIFUL!!! Brought tears to my eyes! Loved her dress, the bridesmaids dresses, Michelle's dress, the decor and everything!! CONGRATS to the happy couple and CONGRATS on your sweet baby boy to be!! God bless you all!

  16. The Catholic Church is the only church that does not permit divorce, so it's nice to see non-Catholics taking steps to preserve the dignity of marriage. I agree, though, that these two will not have to face that.

  17. The first mistake was listening to a man the lead you to believe the birth control was wrong; and that it murdered your first baby (That was a lie from the start.) Second, the public life is a no live for a family. It exploits and destroys it for a profit. Now, it is up to the two of you to fix what you have broken. Starting with you faith and using the brains, that God gave you.
