Settling Sibling Squabbles

"Usually by the time mine are five, six years old, they really do get along because they learn there's a price to be paid for being selfish," explains Michelle Duggar in her latest video blog.

  1. I am so sad that my moving to Arkansas; I can no longer watch your wonderful family and high moral teachings threw your show. Let us know what we can do to help you get back on TV.... The TV has extremely dangerous and unhealthy programing on for anyone to watch. I moved here to be near my grandchildren from Tennessee. I am very angry that your wonderful show is no longer on TV.... I pray that someone will wise up and bring you back; along with more shows of your high caliber. thanks

  3. The first comment makes it sound as if the Duggar's show 19 Kids and Counting has been cancelled for this coming up season (Fall 2013). Is this true?

    1. I think it is "easy" for Michelle these days because it's the older daughters who do most of the hands on work with the younger ones. However, I'm sure she did have her hands full when there were half the amount all under 12 or 13 y.o.! Maybe, that's when she learned and implemented her techniques for keeping the kids in line!

  7. I would like to know what consequences they use as well, as like the above poster, I am so impressed with the love I see among the children and would love to create that same atmosphere in my own home. Michelle, can you please share?

  12. I do not know specifically what consequences the Duggars use, but it may be helpful for you to read some of the material they recommend. They have recommended a DVD series by SM Davis that addresses child-training. They have also recommended a book in their book "The Duggars 20 and Counting" but I cannot recall the name of it off hand if someone else knows of the title. I, personally, have found Tedd Tripp's "Shepherding a Child's Heart" to be helpful as well as a series of lessons by Denny Keniston (of which I can't think of the title but I'm sure if you googled him you could find it). If I may offer some encouragement as you're looking for consequences that "work": I have found the best heart attitude to have as a mom is not to look at the fruit of my children but to ask myself if I'm being faithful, patient, consistent, and kind in training them. When I start looking at what "works" I get very discouraged. Ultimately I want my child's heart to want to please me and submit to me...that takes relationship and lots and lots of time! Hope this is helpful.

  13. Hello i have a question. Are the Duggar Children allowed to listen to pop music?

  14. Michelle's technique sounds good for small children/small problems; but, how does she handle her bigger children/bigger problems??? I'm sure her goal is for the older children to have learned this "talking sweet" to a sibling about the problem; but that may not be successful during the teen years and beyond. I'd like her to address those years and issues.

  17. I would not recommended S.M. Davis or Ted Tripp. These people are not child psychologists. We should be careful to use suggestions from a family just because they are on tv. Something can seem Christian until you start looking deeper. I think there are better books. I also can't stand the terms child training.
No the Duggar kids can't listen to pop music. It's a shame too. If something is bad you can change channels like on TV.

  18. Hi Michelle, I absolutely LOVE watching your show. You and your whole family are a great inspiration..I don't think there is a day I don't think..."What would Michelle do" I currently have a 8yr old, 6yr, 4yr and a 1 1/2 yr old. What I was trying to get from you from this video is how and what did you do when they were fighting over nothing (ie: brother teases sister or sister repeats every word the brother says..and so on) I can't remove anything as I they weren't fighting over an object. I have given them consequenses (time out, explanation, removal of a fav toy, going to bed early..I feel like I have tried it all) Sometimes I think my younger ones are better at listening and doing the right thing the older siblings. I would really really appreciate any tips you may have. (I can't go with the God speach as we are not religious and have never thaught any of this to our kids. We want them to make that choice when they are better educated. Not passing any judgment on you or others ... I believe in being true to ourselves and same goes with everyone else..and if that is a specific religion for someone then that is it.
