Recap: Baby On the Way

On tonight's season premiere episode of 19 Kids and Counting...

  • The Duggars are moving into a new season of life. "It can be a bittersweet thing to watch your children grow up," says Michelle. "They will always be my babies."
  • Jill, studying to become a midwife, is currently taking anatomy and physiology. She is also learning midwifery terms in Spanish and hopes to deliver babies in Latin American someday. Jana is focusing on the coaching aspect of childbirth and plans to become a doula.
  • According to Jim Bob, daughters are harder to let go of than sons. "Our babies our delivering babies," he tells Michelle. We're getting old!"
  • "They're very supportive," says Jana of her parents.
  • Jana and Jill head over to A Mommy's Butterfly Midwifery, where they see 7-12 clients each week for prenatal and postpartum visits. Venessa Giron, the owner of A Mommy's Butterfly, is overseeing Jana and Jill's education and apprenticeship.
  • On Mackynzie's third birthday, Josh and Anna find out they are expecting their third child. Keeping a secret from the rest of the Duggars is always difficult, says Anna. "Especially about pregnancy," says the mom of two. "They're always asking."
  • For the big reveal, Anna invites Jim Bob and Michelle and the rest of the clan over for a themed dinner. The younger Duggars don't know what that is, but everyone agrees that it probably has something to do with fall.
  • On the menu are tater tots, bite-sized vegetables, pigs in a blanket, sliders, and a baby carrier-shaped pumpkin filled with fruit.
  • "Taking our family on for dinner is a pretty big thing," says Jill.
  • Josh and Anna's kitchen is 1/6th the size of Jim Bob and Michelle's, which makes cooking for a crowd a challenge. "Kynzie loves to help," says Anna. "But it does take longer when you're trying to teach someone how to help." When she realizes that dinnertime is drawing closer and there is still a lot to do, Anna puts Mackynzie and Michael down for a nap and calls in backup...cousin Amy Duggar.
  • Anna says that if anyone can carve a pumpkin into a baby carriage, it's Amy. For the baby's head, they use a cantaloupe with a face made of fruit.
  • At 5:50, dinner is nowhere near done, and the Duggars arrive early. Anna, who was banking on "Duggar time," locks the door, and she and Josh and Amy desperately try to finish preparing dinner. "I loved keeping everyone out of the house," says Amy. "I felt like I knew something that they didn't know."
  • When it comes time to guess the theme, some guess finger food, and others predict that Amy is engaged. Jim Bob jokes that Josh and Anna must be opening a restaurant and planning to hire all of Josh's siblings. At the end of the night, everyone gets a special door prize...a candy bar wrapped in a diaper.

  6. I'm curious if the "family album" format at the opening and closing of the show is here to stay. I'm interested to see next week if this a regular part of the show or if it was only last night's episode. I liked it!

They didn't get a new intro, but they did change the part about Josie. Instead of calling her their "latest, precious addition," they changed it to "our youngest daughter."

    Hi Anonymous,

There are many conservative Christians who choose not to eat pork. We actually have some very good friends who have made that choice. It's a matter of personal conviction.

  21. Hey Lily and Ellie. You forgot to mention that Anna told Jessa the week before the themed party that she was expecting. Jessa said during an interview, "My sisters are always finding out about marriages, and other exciting things. But man, 5th borns just don't find out much, do they? Then Anna told me, 'hey Jess, you wanna know a secret?' Then she told me and I was like 'YES!'"

  22. Josh and Anna will be moving to DC after the baby is born in July, Josh will be working for a Christian organization in DC. What will happen to the car lots? The car lots will be kept in the family, Jim Bob would like to have it syay with the Duggars, he thinks it will be a good first job for some of the boys.

  23. I think the questions about pork were asking *why* they don't eat it. I think the fact that it's a personal conviction is obvious. :) Do you know why they choose not to?

    ReplyDelete
  24. I watched the episode, and I'm concerned about Jim Bob because at the end they said the doctor said he had bad news for Jim Bob... uh oh.

  25. I don't understand why they don't eat pork. Jesus declared all meat to be clean in the New Testament. Why would they hold to an OT law when Jesus specifically said it was ok?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think this just has to do with Jim Bob's weight gain.

  28. Anonymous at 926, the only change is the intro is instead of Michelle saying our latest precious addition josie it says our youngest daughter josie. Still the same pictures though

  29. It's not all just conviction but also pork isn't that great for your health.

  30. please can somebody post a link?

  31. Some Christians choose to follow the dietary laws in the OT for health reasons. Yes, they are not required laws anymore after Jesus came and changed things, but some still choose this practice. It's a personal decision/conviction and the Duggars are some who choose to do this. They also follow the cleanliness laws regarding marital intercourse after childbirth... they explain this in their first book.

  33. Will the rest of the episodes this season be around 20 mins like usual? And, have they announced how many episodes will air this season?

Good for Joseph, going through Basic training at ALERT. That is no small accomplishment!

  37. It is becoming more and more clear that Michelle and Jim Bob cannot take care of all their brood alone. I sense someday there will be a Duggar book that is not written by Michelle and Jim Bob and it will not be all roses and smiles. The fact that these two still want more children is a telling fact. Addicted to babies. After infancy, care goes to siblings.

  40. So happy about the new grandduggar. Thinking if you stay with the M theme that a little girl name might be:
    Melissa Anna...Mirand....Marina Suzette....Marianna Joy....or Marie Julianna. Just a thought.

  41. Who has posted the new episode on youtube?

  42. Hi Lily and Ellie,

I live in Ireland and can only watch episodes on you tube so just wondering if last weeks episode is on you tube, would love to see the part where Anna and Josh invite over the family for dinner, would appreciate if you could post link on you tube please

  43. Something I just noticed while re-watching this episode. There is a magnet on Anna & Josh's fridge that says "Mackenzie". Their daughter's named is spelled Mackynzie. What's up with that?

    ReplyDelete
  44. The person who has posted them is called duggar fans.

  45. My comment is about the midwife career that Jill has chosen. Where I live, midwifery is a graduate course that a nurse practioner would choose. These girls appear to have only high school educations. Doesn't seem like a very adequate education for this field.
