I worked in 6 different hospitals all over the US in my 40 years in L& D and I never saw some of the things mentioned here, such as 90 hour labors. I never saw a breech missed for 20 hours. I’m not opposed to home birth IF adequate prenatal care and a CNM in attendance with a hospital on standby. NOT a lay midwife. I have seen emergencies come in after failed home births and that is to be expected occasionally but there is no excuse for the gross negligence seen in Joy’s experience.Labornursehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18369723654949476179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925412444274057427.post-42686811308989190562018-09-04T00:31:22.776-05:002018-09-04T00:31:22.776-05:00There are different reasons for allowing labor to ...There are different reasons for allowing labor to progress many hours. The point here is that this was Joys first baby, he was breech, and he was very large. Many of you have mentioned excessively long labors in a hospital. I am wondering if it was true labor all that time. True labor is determined by progressive dilation of the cervix. Active labor starts when you reach 4 cm by definition. It’s not just how long you were uncomfortable.Labornursehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18369723654949476179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925412444274057427.post-10408798394290840662018-09-04T00:21:20.458-05:002018-09-04T00:21:20.458-05:00They are tv stars and their husbands have jobs. Now they need to undergo vigorous testing. Therebare exercises to emcourage a breech baby to turn during later pregnancy..it is actually pretty easy to tell if a baby is breech if you know how to manipulate the fetus in the womb. Very rarely does a baby flip once labour begins and usually Mom knows something major just happened! Long labours are not bad. We tend as a modern society to expect everything on a time table. Long before physician intervention it was not unusual for twins to be born os different days. Labour quite oftne stalls after the birth of the first twin si the mother can take care of it first..now we almost always see cesareans for twins so they are born within seconds of each otherAn B.https://www.blogger.com/profile/01836364793814765268noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925412444274057427.post-4036044085511418412018-03-21T18:05:44.644-05:002018-03-21T18:05:44.644-05:00Amen! (For example, at the hospital where I work, a doctor informed a patient's family that starvation is the easiest way to die and was encouraging the family to withhold food and water) Most medical professionals I know DO value life, but unfortunately, from what I've seen, that IS changing. When someone arrives at hospital in an emergency situation it is more difficult because we have no previous medical history to go on, this is not the persons fault as they did not know what their day would bring and that they would find themselves in the ER. These young women by not having pre natal care and an ob/gyn, and then attempting an ill advised home birth needlessly put hospital staff in that difficult position. I also must say that I have yet to hear any of them thank the hospital staff, doctors, nurses and midwives for saving them and their babies.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925412444274057427.post-76766914775570264992018-03-18T16:40:23.835-05:002018-03-18T16:40:23.835-05:00Interesting that Jill would be the primary midwife...Interesting that Jill would be the primary midwife when she doesn't seem certified or licensed right now to practice in Arkansas. Usually hospitals do not step in with first time labors as quickly as with 2nd and 3rd time labors unless there is a major issue.
Instead they like to let them progress slowly and naturally and it is natural for a first time mother to labor for 24 + hrs.
This does not mean that 2nd and 3rd labors etc, etc can not be as long or longer for some women but the rule of thumb is that 1st time labors take longer so they dont step in as soon unless there are complications.
I cant see why home birth midwives would do it differently unless there is a major complication that they cannot deal with and the hospital can.
As for Jill - she may well not have been the main midwife assigned to Joy she may well have been her extra support person instead - given that she and Joy were on the same buddy team growing up and therefore really close.
The other Duggar girls all had some one else as the midwife and in any case usually family cannot assist and be the primary midwife if they are otherwise on call that day. lets stop and think before we make claim to blame where it really isn't warranted.
It may well have been Jill who said to the midwife on call "hey I think this baby may be breach, this is what happened to me - lets get her to the hospital" - I haven't seen the episode shorts and who knows anyway.
And Yes babys can turn breach at any moment -even the last moment and even given a larger size baby.
Many women who have commented on this blog can testify to this. We really do need to educate people about what labor really can be like.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6925412444274057427.post-20201984755506954912018-03-17T23:04:45.901-05:002018-03-17T23:04:45.901-05:00Seems like a pattern.
