'A Duggar Bachlor Pad' Recap

Counting On "A Duggar Bachelor Pad"
  • A group of Duggars flies to the Bahamas to do relief work following Hurricane Dorian.
  • The Seewalds embark on their first road trip with three kids. It’s a three-and-a-half hour drive to Kansas City, where their friends, Brandon and Jenna Chapman, recently moved. “I like looking out the window and singing songs,” says Spurgeon.
  • When they arrive in Kansas City, they meet the Chapmans at an apple orchard. The next day, they go to the zoo. Henry runs off a couple times, and Ben has to go find him.
  • Back in the day, Michelle would bring perfume or cologne on car rides, in case a baby had a blowout and was smelly.
  • In California, 15-month-old Felicity has her first swimming lesson. Jeremy goes into the pool with her, along with the instructor. Felicity does fine, until she has to put her face in the water.
  • “A few of my siblings and I did not really learn how to swim, and I was in that middle section of kids,” says Jinger.
  • “Our oldest set of kids, they learned how to swim,” says Jim Bob. “They took swimming lessons. And then the younger kids have all gotten a lot of time swimming at a house that we owned for a while that had a swimming pool in the backyard.” But a few of the middle ones didn’t have many opportunities to swim.
  • “Duggars are not known for swimming,” says Kendra, who is a good swimmer.
  • Jedidiah and Jeremiah show off their new bachelor pad. They still need some important items, including a table and couches. Aside from John, who moved out for a while to do pilot work, and Joseph, who went to college for a short time, Jed and Jer are the first Duggars to move out of the big house before marriage. “All the older kids, they have their own choice, if they want to move out or stay at home,” says Jedidiah. “It’s up to them. A lot of us, we love being at home.”
  • The twins share a room at their new house, even though they have enough rooms to have their own space. Jed says that his parents were on board with the move.
  • “When our kids get 18 or older, they have the ability to move out or the freedom to do that,” says Jim Bob. “But most of them have realized, ‘Hey, staying here at Mom and Dad’s house until I get married, I can save up a lot of money.’”
  • Joseph and Josiah come over for a visit. The twins struggle to make the burgers, so the married guys step in to help.
  • Later, a bunch of Duggars split up into teams to see who can navigate through a corn maze in the least amount of time. The results are:
    • The Seewalds' team: 6 minutes, 25 seconds
    • Jim Bob and Michelle's team: 7 minutes, 48 seconds
    • Jason's team: 8 minutes, 38 seconds
    • Joe and Kendra's team: 10 minutes, 32 seconds
    • John and Abbie's team: 11 minutes, 37 seconds
    • The Forsyths' team: 15 minutes, 30 seconds
  • "We all made it through, and we're all winners," says Jim Bob.

  1. I so appreciate this show each week. It completely takes my mind off the cares of the wold for an hour. I always hate to see the series end for the season.

  2. A lot of families with children living below the poverty line don’t have opportunities to teach their kids to swim. Remember this was the case for the Duggar family before they hit the TV jackpot.

    1. My family didn't have much money when I was growing up. We never took official swimming lessons, but my dad made a point of teaching us all to swim at the nearest lake. I also taught my own kids. It isn't rocket science.

      Delete
    2. What stops them from learning how to swim now? Adults can learn to swim too.

      Delete
    3. I think the kids didn’t get to swim because they didn’t want to take their kids to a pool where girls wore revealing swimsuits.

It wasn’t until they owned a house with a private pool did they regularly swim.

      Delete
    4. It costs zero money to learn how to swim. You can learn at a public pool. Even knowing how to tread water and float are valuable skills.

      Delete
    5. I think I heard Jinger say she was taking swim lessons.

      Delete
    6. regarding cost - public pools are very expensive in my region. $10 adult and $6 child. Also, it is a maximum of one adult and two children so my friends with three children can never go. One of my friends has twins and she is not allowed to register both in a parent & tot program. Not saying this should change for money or safety but just saying nothing is free and some families are very restricted.

      Delete
    7. Lack of money is no excuse to not teach your own child a simple life saving skill.

      Delete
    8. 9:30, some people literally can't afford lessons or public pool fees and don't live near water and don't know anyone with a pool. What are they supposed to do? Teach their kid in the bathtub?

      Delete
    9. Public pools in my area cost money to use and swim lessons start at $30 for a group lesson (1 instructor with 8-12 other children for 6-8 30 minute sessions). Private one-on-one lessons are $70-75 for 2-3 90 minute sessions in my area.

      Delete
    10. It depends if your child would ever go swimming. I am over 65 and never learned to swim. Never needed to know how. I live in an urban area where swimming pools are not common. Even the rare times I have been in a swimming pool, I had never gone in water deeper than my waist.

  3. So Jed has to live in the district he wants to represent and gets to move into his own pad as long as she shares a bedroom with his brother. I don't think the voters are going to buy into the idea that he's somehow independent of his parents. And that corn maze thingy was just stupid. If they're all "winners" why did they time the teams?

  4. I get it JB. The single adults live at home so they can have money. Makes perfect sense to me. Glad you cleared that one up for us.

  5. I hope the middle kids learn how to swim. It’s an excellent skill to have and it could save your life. Plus it’s really fun to swim. I’m so glad I learned as a kid.

    2. You're right,it's important to learn to swim,I don't understand why they didn't use grandma's swimming pool to teach the middle kids to swim,I'm sure grandma would have let them use it.

    3. She said she could swim to save her life, just that she’s not a strong swimmer! I can “swim” but I wouldn’t call myself a strong swimmer either

      Delete
    4. 2:58, Grandma was living with them for a number of years. She didn't always live in the house with a pool.

      Delete
    5. I agree with anon 4PM. I could swim, but just barely when I was in high school. Just enough not to drown. I didn't get better until my twenties when I went to the pool and actually practiced swimming.

      Delete
  6. They didn't address the elephant in the room. Jed has to live in the district he wants to represent. But twin beds in the SAME bedroom with his brother doesn't make him look very mature.

    1. Jed's opponent should take all this info and run with it. But she's too classy to do that, and has too many other accomplishments under her belt.

      Delete
    2. Not sure what it would take to make Jed look mature against his opponent. There's an age and experience gap that no amount of meals eaten on your own ping pong table in your own living room is going to change.

      Delete
    3. It's a two bedroom house why can't they have their own rooms?

      Delete
    4. It's too bad you are so negative. In my twenties I lived in an apartment and shared a bedroom with my friend for a while and we had twin beds. Some people may not vote for him because he is not older and more established. He took a chance running at such a young age but for the office he is running for does tend to enable younger candidates to win in some districts. We will see if the voters think he is old enough and knowledgeable enough for the voters. Win or lose he should be proud he was willing to take such a chance. I wish him well. If he wins it could set him up for a long career in politics. If he loses it will be a great experience for him and he might win the next time.

      Delete
    5. I'm pretty sure many voters will be voting on the candidates' platforms, not on where their beds are located.

      Delete
    6. 7:57 Lol I think what happened was that the bunk beds were moved in first and then when it came time to film they thought, "oh no we can't have Jed sharing a bunk bed because he will look too young to run for office." So they moved in the two twin beds--but never realized how laughable that would look, for two grown men to sleep in the same room two feet apart, when other bedrooms were available. Anyway, their "doing things a bit different" never fails to entertain.

      Delete
    7. I can understand two brothers renting a house together because it is more affordable. But it does look strange to have them both in the same bedroom, with twin beds, when they live in a 3 bedroom home.... and one running for a political position in a district he never lived in until he decided to run for an office in said district.Kind of like putting the cart before the horse.

  7. A corn maze "competition"? I think JB and Michelle need to just go away. These pointless competitions are just silly.

      Delete
    4. During natural disaster aftermath, there are sometimes looters. Maybe that's why he had the gun.

      Delete
    5. How can you take a gun to another country and legally carry it there?

      Delete
    6. Maybe he had been deputized?

      Delete
    7. "Thou shalt not kill" unless you're looting after a natural disaster?

      Delete
    8. It is smart of him to carry. Protecting his family and his plane. You never know what could happen in unfamiliar territory especially during trying times people do crazy things.

      Delete
    9. I know that if you try to take a gun on your boat to the Bahamas, you have to declare it to local officials when you arrive and leave it locked on the boat. You would think the same rule applies to planes, if you fly in and you're not a citizen there.

      Delete
    10. "Thou shalt not kill." actually translates to thou shalt not murder (to kill another without just cause). Our English word kill was the closest word, the connotation being kill meant wantonly, without regard for law and order, justice, or morality. There are numerous instances in the Bible where God instructed Israel to go to war, which obviously involves killing, so clearly there was a difference. ;)

      Delete
    11. @11:14. He would not. We do not "deputize" in British Commonwealth countries. Our law enforce are highly trained. Moreover, they would NEVER "deputize" some American who knows nothing of the local laws.

No, he would have been stopped at the border for carrying an unlicensed gun. If he brought it in and did not declare it, that is a very serious crime. Gun licenses are NOT recognized in other countries.

    1. I enjoyed this too but can't imagine Jill was happy they chose to use so much footage of her since Derick has been clear that she is no longer part of the show or getting financial support from JB.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous 10:55, even if they don't want to be on the show anymore, they agreed to shoot these scenes and TLC can use them... but yeah I can't imagine how Derick felt

      Delete
    3. Jill has voluntarily been on the show in the three years since the Dillards formally stopped filming. She was heavily featured in Ivy's birth episode and briefly in other episodes. Derick is the one vocal about not being filmed and speaks out about JB. I would love to hear what Jill actually thinks about her time on the show and what's going on between Derick and Jim Bob.
TLC will continue to show Jill in past episodes since she agreed to be filmed at the time.

      Delete
    4. I completely agree-I’d like to hear what Jill thinks too. I can’t imagine she’d publicly disagree with her husband though.

  10. Haven't watched any of the episodes on TLC for Counting On since the show started, but it's good to know that Michelle and Jim Bob aren't keeping the kids home once they turn 18. They can move out if they please or save up money to then move out. I'm sure with 19 kids, that is the best plan out there for the kids.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In a generic way, JB explained kids age 18 can move out or stay. That’s so we will all get off of Jana’s case. She’s now free to move out, unchaperoned. Yup.

      Delete
    2. How many years do you have to stay at home and how much money do you need to save up before you make this big split? If you have an education and a good job with a steady income, you don't need much more than the first and last month's rent and some utility deposits before you can go. "Live at home and save up." Righty-ho, JB! We've seen how many kids have taken that offer to go at 18.

  11. I thought they have a swimming pool at the "big house". We were told Grandma Duggar fell into it and drowned. So why don't they ALL know how to swim?

    1. Pool was at a house on an adjacent property.

  12. "The big house" is slang for "Jail" so I always chuckle when I hear JB and Michelle say it. It is kind of like jail, no one escapes unless they're married or running for office. But aside from that, it was an enjoyable show last night. Loved watching Felicity with her swimming lessons. And I agree with others that say it's an important safety skill to have and everybody should learn how to swim.

  13. If they planned on living in this place permanently you'd think they'd get some furniture to put in it. No table, no couch. Really?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you watched you would have heard them say that is exactly what they plan to do

      Delete
    2. All they'd have to do is go rummage through the Duggar storage buildings and they'd probably find enough furniture for 10 houses.

      Delete
    3. Patricia: Most of us bring furniture with us when we move in to a place, we don't talk about bringing it in at a later date. lol

      Delete
    4. No, 7:45, many people move in and buy furniture afterwards. A lot of times the move is expensive and you have to wait and save up to buy furniture. And once there, you can better plan what furniture will fit where and purchase accordingly.

      Delete
    5. They are not going to “buy” furniture for this house. If Jed loses, they will move out.

      Delete
    6. Anon 9:42. The Duggars have warehouses full of cast off furniture so why didn't the "boys" just get something from there to furnish their new digs? All they brought was bunk beds, twin beds and a ping pong table. This whole thing is fishy IMO.

      Delete
    7. Sometimes you have to live in space a little while to determine what you actually need once you figure out how you want or need to use the space. It's not that unusual to wait to buy or get furniture. Sometimes, you're waiting because you have friends or family getting ready to redecorate, move, or downsize and they're planning to pass items along to you.

I enjoyed how Jim Bob and Michelle went down memory lane. Loved the show. Natasha B.

  15. I am always shocked at all the negative comments on here. I truly love this show

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I know. The negative comments are just such a downer. They complain or have a negative spin on everything. "When are the adult kids moving out? When are they getting a job." And then... "Oh, well you moved out but it isn't good enough because you are sharing expenses by living with your brother. Oh... well you say you own a business but we choose not to believe you and just still claim you don't work". Its hard to understand why some people seem to get enjoyment by watching a show they don't like and just tearing it apart. I have no interest in watching people I don't like on TV.

      Delete
    2. If you can share your view of loving this show, then others should be able to share their views, too.

    3. The Duggars have an uncommon lifestyle. Not everyone admires them. Some people watch "reality" TV because the people are outrageous or laughable or kinda nutty or just very unusual. Have you seen the commercials on TLC for their other shows, for example? Sorry you don't get it but many people watch and enjoy these types of shows because the content is so strange to them. And, when the Duggars make claims that don't seem backed up by other parts of their lives which are seen on TV, people are going to notice and speak up about it.
THAT is REALITY TV and the path the Duggars have chosen.

      Delete
    4. I agree. The fact that people go out of their way to watch a show they don’t like so that they can complain about it later is baffling!

      Delete
    5. @7:38 Agree with you. @10:00, how do you know those do criticize the Duggars actually watch all of the show?

      Delete
    6. I don’t understand it either. There are whole websites dedicated to criticizing the Duggars and other families like them. I don’t understand why anyone would waste their time with that.

  17. Goodness, how could they think that immerging Felicity underwater at that age would get her accustomed to water, anyone with a brain would understand she would get a shock and she will probably be scared of water for a long time, that also happened to my son when he was five years old and we both fell in accidentally while I was holding him I didn't do it on purpose,he got over the fear of water about five years later.

    3. There's actually a whole school of thought about starting when they are babies precisely because they tend to be less traumatized than when they get to be your son's age.

      Delete
    4. The California way is to get kids used to the water and teach them how to swim at an early age.

      Delete
    5. What happened to your son and a swim lesson are completely different things. Felicity was in a stable environment and had her face in the water for a second. It is a normal and age appropriate part of a lesson to get her accustomed to the water.

      Delete
    6. I taught my kids to swim at a young age myself. I think they did better with someone they know and trust. I made a game out of holding our breath and putting our faces in the water. Then, I'd hold them while we both went under and back up quickly. No one ever cried! (This is how my dad taught us.) They could swim like fish by the time they were 3, jumping off the diving board and swimming in the deep end of our pool. I guess you just have to do what works for you. If swimming lessons with a pro works, that's great! The point is to learn to swim!

      Delete
    7. Our swim instructor taught the kids to make "alligator faces" (blow out the water from their mouths while putting their face in the water up to their eyes) to get them accustomed to their face being in. The kids loved it-I think it was their favorite part of lessons! Once you get them that far, it's not hard getting them to close their eyes and go the last few inches and you've taught them to breathe out, not in.

    6. 7:36am Please don't put down the good people of Arkansas. Your comment, "he would suffer a loss if he ran anywhere but Arkansas", makes it sound like the people of Arkansas would vote for anyone-experience or ideas not important. 4. Some mothers don't put their babies on a schedule when nursing. They just nurse on demanded. That's what I did, and it worked out pretty well. My youngest nursed between every 2hrs or 3hrs sometimes an hour and a half if he was going thru a growth spurt. Being a nursing mom made it easier cause I didn't have to carry extra stuff in my bag to make a bottle, I just grabbed my cover and started feeding him where ever I was. Stores, restaurants, park, etc.

    5. You pretty much have to nurse a baby when it's hungry so you really can't feed it based on some activity you want to engage in.

    6. Just going by how happy and chunky Ivy is, she seems very well fed! Jessa must be doing something right.

    7. Actually you can pump breastmilk and opt for someone else to feed your baby. Our pediatrician actually advised us to do this occasionally, in the event I ever became seriously ill or injured and unable to nurse (or God forbid died or was killed in like a car accident). If the baby is somewhat used to another person feeding her occasionally, it would be less traumatic/stressful for the baby in an emergency (as well as your spouse and other family members). It also gives the dad another bonding route to occasionally feed his nursing baby, as well as allowing mom to catch a break during growth spurt nursing or if the baby is comfort nursing when sick. Some nursing mothers express milk for a family member/sitter to feed the baby, while mom and dad enjoy a date. Should the parents be delayed in returning, the baby isn't stresses, the parents aren't stressed over a hungry baby waiting, and the family member/sitter can step in. Just food for thought.

      Delete
    8. Pumping was a big pain in the neck when I tried it for several babies. I would never have pumped if I were going to be with my baby.

  22. While i admire Ben for being an involved dad, there should have been stronger consequences when Henry decided to run off not once, but twice. That is truly a dangerous situation in public places. At that age, just mildly saying, "Don't do that" doesn't really work. I am a pretty calm parent, but when it comes to possible life threatening situations, I'm a tough disciplinarian because I love my kids and their safety is paramount.

    1. I agree with you 1:21AM. Our son used to run off on outings because he thought it was fun-kind of like a game of hide and seek. At the age of 3, he did not see the danger and stern warnings did not help. Finally, (after a scary episode when he left the store and we found him in a parking lot), I bought a child's harness and "leash". We got some dirty looks from strangers but our son's safety was our priority.

  24. From the decoration of the boys house, it appears they are only staying there so Jed is in the district he's running for. They probably will move back home if he loses. It's probably also one of JB's houses too. Some of the things they do to look "funny" doesn't come off well if you want to be taken seriously for public office (not knowing how to cook, ping pong table for meals). Also, they then cut to the segment of Michelle claiming they teach all the kids to cook and do laundry so they are independent as adults yet the boys clearly say they don't know how to cook. Someone isn't telling the truth there.

    1. I agree @10:54. It is obvious to me that these are two very nice young men and one day Jed could be a viable candidate for a government position. Unfortunately, he needs other schooling credentials besides being home schooled, and many more independent life experiences with no connection to family functions. I hope he will not give up his dream if he doesn’t make it in the next election.

    2. The girls said they couldn't cook either but even on tv & in their books speak about the older girls doing all the cooking.

    3. It actually doesn't have to be a lie. You can give a kid exposure and practice at cooking when they are young but until they do it on their own when their younger they sometimes forget. It's different when you have to do it yourself and you don't have a parent or sibling helping when you forget something.

    4. Anon 9:31. You don't have to know how to cook to put a frozen meat pattie in a skillet and turn on the burner its sitting on. I don't know if they were playing to the cameras or if they really are that dumb but it was just silly.

  25. This is hilarious. They must have realized that two grown men sleeping in bunk beds was bad optics so they brought in the twin beds to make it look better. They should have brought in a couch while they were at it. lol

  26. Guys in their 20s who don't even know how to brown a frozen meat patty? Or had to ask if the stove was electric? That's just sad.

    1. I know. The excuses some fans are making for that have me chuckling. In the real world if you turn the knob on the stove a burner will come on. lol

    2. What kind of stove is this? How do you turn it on? lol

    3. Yes. And now that Jed owns the used car lot, I wonder if his brothers like working for him.

  27. Are the brothers not allowed to hug each other???? They shook hands like they just met. Very odd.

  28. I am thinking those pregnant women should not have been running in that heat. But funny how Jesse could run a whole maze at record time carrying a baby but then wouldn't even get up for water and made Ben fetch it for her.

    1. Hello... she was tired from running the whole maze with a baby... you said it yourself. That's why she asked Ben to get her a water...

  29. I think Jed is relying on "name recognition" to get elected. He has no life experience, education or involvement in organizations in the district he wants to represent to recommend him to voters. Guess we'll find out how much weight the Duggar name carries with voters when the ballots are cast.

  30. That's cool the twins got a place together... The Kansas trip was nice, well except Henry running... Good Job Jessa/Ben on the maze, my 2nd favorite couple! And LOVE that Jinger is getting swimming lessons and Felicity too.. Her siblings with kids need go follow suit, for everyones safety.
