'Baby Number Two...But Who?' Recap

Counting On "Baby Number Two...But Who?"

  • In Laredo, Jeremy sets up a canvas and paint on the porch and lets Felicity go wild to create a Mother’s Day gift for Jinger. Felicity gets paint all over herself, even on her mouth. “This is the newest things in modern art,” says Jeremy. “It’s called body art.”
  • Meanwhile, a speech pathologist friend stops by the Seewalds’ house to evaluate Henry’s speech. “There are definitely times where I just think, ‘Am I doing something wrong as a mom?’” admits Jessa.
  • “…I’m thankful there’s experts,” says Jim Bob. “And they can help us get through those challenges and be able to help our children thrive,” adds Michelle.
  • Henry is two years old and only has a few words. “I would say, when Henry can’t express what he wants and he just screams, in hopes that we will realize what he wants, that can really be draining to us as parents,” says Ben. “That’s a time when maybe you have to go in the other room, step out of the room for a minute, pray for patience. It’s easier said than done sometimes, but that’s what we shoot for.”
  • The speech pathologist determines that Henry is in the sixth percentile with his speech. She recommends that they wait another four to six weeks to see how many words Henry picks up.
  • Before the Vuolos make their big move to Los Angeles, Joseph, Kendra, and Garrett travel to Laredo for a visit for the first time. The goal is to get the house ready to put on the market. The guys do some small repairs, while the ladies organize and set aside items to sell or donate.
  • Out of the married Duggars, which ones are packrats, and which ones like to let things go?
  • Michelle: “I like to let things go. It gives me energy to let things go.”
  • Jim Bob: “I enjoy hanging onto things and collecting them. I’m a collector.”
  • Joseph: “I like to accumulate. I’m not hoarding. I’m just accumulating.”
  • Josiah: “Lauren is a minimalist. I’m very much like, ‘There’s space, let’s fill it.’”
  • Kendra, who is pregnant with her second child, asks Jinger if she and Jeremy are planning to have another child. Jinger says that she gets that question a lot from the Duggars. “Definitely in any other family, if someone asks you, ‘Are you expecting?’ it could be taken as offensive…but in our family, it’s just a given,” says Jinger.
  • As a thank you, the Vuolos take Joe and Kendra and Garrett to Border Foundry, their favorite restaurant. Everyone dresses up for the occasion. “As a mom…I’m always worried that [Garrett] is going to disrupt the peace,” says Kendra.
  • Neither the Duggars nor the Caldwells have much experience eating at fancy restaurants. “I thought fine dining was, instead of going through the drive-thru, you go inside,” says Jeremiah. “That’s fine, right there,” agrees Jedidiah.
  • The owner has a waiter bring out appetizers on the house. Everyone enjoys the fried frog legs, knowing what they are. Next, the couples eat grasshopper without knowing what it is. It isn’t too bad, but none of them are eager to eat it again.
  • At the Duggar home, the younger kids are taking on new chores as the older ones are away from the home at their respective jobs. “It feels more busy, and sometimes chaotic, getting more responsibilities,” says Johannah.
  • The Duggars have a few cows, as well as ducks, chickens, rabbits, cats, and dogs. One of the Duggars’ cows had a calf, named Paco. Sadly, the mother cow passed away. As a homeschool project, Michelle and Anna, who recently told the family that she is pregnant, show the kids how to care for Paco.
  • Later, it’s family night at the Duggar house. After dinner, everyone sits down to paint while watching a tutorial by Clive5Art. In the middle of the painting class, Joy and Austin put their pregnancy announcement picture up on the screen. It takes a few moments for people to see it. “My dad did not look at the screen right away because he wasn’t even following the instructions,” says Joy. “He was just painting whatever he wanted.” As always, the family is excited.

  1. This will be such a sad episode to watch when we get it next Monday. Seeing Joy & Austin so happy announcing their second pregnancy, only for us all to know the terribly sad outcome at 20 weeks. I have been thinking of Joy so much over the last few weeks with the births of her nieces starting & I hope she is coping well with the pain & stress that this will undoubtedly be bringing to her.

    1. Should not air at all their announcing a pregnancy one week knowing there was a miscarriage. It would be one thing to just mention the miscarriage to make all this entertainment is just wrong. TLC is doing damage to the family.

    2. But on the other hand, you can not just eliminate those happy memories of finding she was pregnant, and the pregnancy she had. It's part of her life, and that pregnancy ended sadly, but still it is her life, and Joy&Austin were happy about it, and the family was happy.

    3. I agree O.P. I think they could mention it, but knowing the outcome it would be very sad

  2. Those girls wouldn't have so much clutter around the house to get rid of if they didn't make such huge wedding gift registries and invite 1000 people to their weddings. Jessa had kitchen cabinets and a storage unit stuffed with unused things. Jinger obviously does, too. How'd you like to be watching tonight and see your gift, still in the box, get an orange or pink Post-It stuck on it, like it was in the way? I thought that was rude and didn't need to be done on camera.

    1. Totally agree. And not only did they invite 1000+ to the weddings but they opened up their registries to the public so well-intentioned fans could send gifts, too.

      Delete
    2. Agreed. Maybe for the next wedding they could just ask for donations in their name to their favorite charity. Or instead of selling all that stuff they could donate it to a local shelter...

      Delete
    3. I agree! There are many women who don't have a husband or family to rely on. It would teach the younger kids (not so much 'littles') to get involved in community projects.

      Delete
    4. I agree, I find it quite rude the Duggar girls posted such large gift registries for the public and they have showed cupboards full of unopened gifts they haven’t opened or used. Maybe they should’ve asked for donations or something instead of being so greedy

      Delete
    5. The options mentioned above are good ones and perhaps a lesson will be learned. However, the public always has the option not to purchase gifts. In my opinion it is not kind to call people we only know through what is presented on TV rude or greedy.

      Delete
    6. 1:38- If fans are sending them gifts, that's really bizarre, especially when it's highly likely many of those same fans have little money to part with in the first place. Any unopened gifts should be donated to charity, IMO, rather than be stored on a shelf and go unused. I think they should do away with gift registries in their circumstances and request
      charitible donations instead.

      Delete
    7. No, they need to make it clear that they will not be requesting or accepting gifts at all. The first Duggar wedding that does that will get my thumbs up. (Of course, they'll still throw showers...)

    2. I don't think we should label the kid with this.
Autism is something many kids get diagnosed with just because doctors have a name of some developmental delays now. Without it many kids would just develop at their own speed and live happily. But now everyone is labeled and profiled. I find it to be sad.

      Delete
    3. I agree! If a child develops something later than others people immediately label them!! I think that having a consult with a speech pathologist was smart, however. I doubt seriously that Henry is anything but developing at his own pace!!

      Delete
    4. Autism is a complex disability. Speech delay is not always a link and its Not just a label.
Yes, development can vary from child to child that's why in my experience there is a lot done before autism or other learning disabilities are dignosed.

      Delete
    5. 5:48- Autism is a real thing! It's not a 'label'to say a person has autism. That needs to be addressed in order to help the child! They will never cope with the real world if it is hidden. There are special needs classes in schools for children like them to develop, grow and expand on whatever talents they do have! Call it what you want, but ignoring the autism will only hurt a child/adult who has it. Stop being so politically correct! America and other countries are in messes right now because of it!

      Delete
    6. Now everyone is labeled and profiled. . . and given help and services. And taught skills that make their lives better.

      Delete
    7. Why does it bother you if a little boy gets speech therapy? He needs a diagnosis or the state won't pay for it. I'm glad the state pays for children to get speech therapy and other services, but they won't give it to you unless an expert finds a problem. I think Jesus, who loved little children, would be delighted when they got the help they needed.

      Delete
    8. It seems premature to suggest autism with regard to Henry when that has never been mentioned on the show. Kudos to Jessa and Ben for being so open and honest about Henry's speech delays and for being an encouragement to other parents with a special needs child. Ben's description of Henry's screaming fits gives a tiny window into the extra challenges their family faces. For what it's worth, they have my sympathy and support.

      Delete
    9. I dont think he has autism. I have a autistic son. He was diagnosed at 4 years old. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome at the age of 40. I wish i got 'labeled" at young age. I struggeld all my life not knowing what was different about me and not getting the help i needed. Finally i broke down, was taken to a hospital for mentall illnesses where i stayed for two months. I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome and a personality disorder. I just wish my parents when i was a child, brought me to a psychiatrist to "label" me and then i would nt suffered for years. I dont think Henry has autism but im very happy Jessa and Ben seek for help. Every child will develop in his own way, but sometimes its better to seek assistance.

      Delete
    10. @4:14 No one said that autism is not a real identified condition but a recent study has shown that it is over-diagnosed. It is like the situation years ago with ADHD. People are jumping on 'their must be something wrong' if a child is not meeting or exceeding developmental milestones.

      Delete
    11. Anon 2.20. It’s virtually impossible to diagnose autism before the age of 4. My son had an issue with speech, just like Henry & at 3 it as thought he may have autism. I always knew that wasn’t the issue & eventually he was diagnosed with dyspraxia which is a coordination issue & can cause speech issues. My son went on to be extremely bright finishing school with 5A* A levels (in the uk the average is 3 & very few people get all A*s). He went on to oxford to study medicine & finished the top of his graduating year. My son who at 3 was thought to be autistic is now studying cardiovascular surgery & is an example of exactly why a child shouldn’t be labelled so early. Many professionals I know now state autism cannot be definitely diagnosed before the age of 4. If Henry goes on y to o achieve half of what my son has, Jessa & Ben will be extremely proud of him & if he does have anything more serious they will still be proud of everything he achieves. I wish them lots of love while they deal with this as I know it’s difficult as a parent.

  5. I see that this show has been circling back to the parents. Why is that? Counting On is supposed to feature and focus on some of the married children. We don't want to see the parents any more as TLC promised. Jim Bob and Michelle are not necessary for this program to have enough content. Please stop featuring them.

    8. I love when they interview Jim Bob and Michelle. It reminds me of “19 Kids and Counting.” Their influence on their married children is huge. So In order to better understand the older kids as featured on Counting On, it helps to understand their parents’ points of view.

  6. My Dad really liked where they were eating the grasshoppers and frog legs. I liked how Jinger and Jeremy were color coordinating by posted notes what to sell and what to keep. We both liked the family fun game night where they were painting. Loved where Jeremy and Felicity were painting a poster for Jinger for Mother's Day. We liked where Joy and Austin made the announcement video but very sad that it passed away. We also liked seeing Anna and her kids hoping to see more of them. Also Jim Bob and Michelle's 4 younger girls helping out with the animals especially the little calf. I love seeing all the kids on the show. Natasha B.

  7. The season is almost over and they are still so far behind.Next weeks episode looks like more of the same...How many couple retreats do we need to see. There is so much they can show us, but choose to repeat the same material.I hope the next season we don't have to wait so long, maybe it will close the gap a little and get caught up somewhat😊😇

    1. That couples' retreat looks ridiculous. They've been married 5 minutes. Why do they have to renew vows and play silly games? Camera time, that's all.

    3. It's not the same material but I agree I am not excited about the retreat because I want real life things. I will wait and see though. The show has been better this season so maybe next week's will be ok as well.

    4. I think that all of TLC's shows, are behind, to some degree. Between cancelled shows, airing test shows, and showing new seasons of the long-running shows, it might be quite a balancing act, for TLC, to give each show, an equal amount of air time.

  8. am i the only one who found it disturbing when michelle mentioned 'anna' being pregnant? like she hesitated and emphasized 'anna' because she was thinking 'josh & anna' but wasnt allowed to say 'josh'. i get it that he cant be on the show but dismissing him like that as if anna, got pregnant by herself is not cool at all. it would make sense if she was talking about her daughter but josh is her child, not anna.
in fact, its kind of a double standard on the part of tlc. if derick 'forbids' his family from being on the show, why has jill and/or the kids been seen in at least 3 episodes since? josh doesnt have to be shown but to ignore his existence is just wrong.
if i was tlc, i'd definitely not allow jill & the kids to slip through anymore. granted it's their decision on their show but derick seems to be on the warpath with them and i can see him wanting to sue when he becomes a lawyer

    1. Men don't get pregnant, women do and are having to do the "heavy lifting" in this department. The guy's contribution is, well, once and done- no risk, no discomfort, no pain and no profound changes to the body that can last a lifetime. I found nothing strange or disturbing about Michelle mentioning that Anna was pregnant.

      Delete
    2. Yes, you must be the only one! The women are the ones who get pregnant, not the men. Generally I expect to hear the woman's name when I hear about someone being pregnant. It's completely normal. I haven't seen Jill on the show as you mention, although I'd love to.

      Delete
    3. You mean Michelle should've said "Josh is pregnant now, so Anna can't do heavy lifting"??? Like, seriously? Anna is pregnant, she was trying to carry that calf, so why do we have to mention her husband who was not even in the episode??

      Delete
    4. Derick didn’t ban Jill or the boys from being on the show, he removed himself. Also, there is no reason for Josh to be mentioned on the show ever again.

  10. Some of the comments are negative on the new format. That is, bringing in a number of people in the family. Personally, I like the idea of calling it "Counting On" and not "Jill and Jessa Counting On" because it does bring in the whole family. The premise started because it was a family of 19 kids and all the resulting issues. It is nice to see the younger kids included and was fun to the other things they do other than give birth, like caring for Paco and Felicity the artist. They do have a lot of content to cover, but it is nice seeing everyone involved, even Kendra's father next week, as well as the conversation with Lauren's mom. Maybe they will cover Jason and James graduation.

  11. So the Duggar's have farm animals now. Do they have experience in taking care of farm animals? I hope the animals are getting adequate food and shelter. A lot of time and effort are necessary. They shouldn't be used for publicity.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They've had that "farm" for a long time. Or, land with cows on it that the IRS considers a farm.

What I didn't understand was how Michelle said one of "their" cows died, then Anna turned around said "When we got the calf," like it was someone else's calf that they acquired.

      Delete
    2. Wait a minute....you are worried about the few farm animals they have, but you are not worried about the grave conditions in a slaughter house? I think your "worries" are pretty skewed.

      Delete
    3. I seriously doubt they bought animals that have to be taken care of on a daily basis for publicity. They are filmed for a very short time during the year. They wouldn’t make a decision to do that much work just for a few minutes on tv.

      Delete
    4. You can get a large tax break if you have a "farm" even if it's a couple of cows. President Trump put sheep on his golf course so it could be listed as a farm for tax purposes.

      Delete
    5. They have a lot of land and a 7,000 square feet house. They have a large family. So it is natural they would have a garden with vegetables and also some animals, like cows to have fresh milk and chickens to have fresh eggs.

      Delete
    6. 11:33 AM -- So Trump was smart, I guess.

      Delete
  12. Wow, it's so nice that they now have some animals! Like cows, ducks and chickens. Jenny somehow as not very talkative, but she's been like this all the time, more like an introvert.

  13. I feel like Jinger saying ‘asking someone if they’re pregnant would be offensive in other families’ is her basically saying ‘it is offensive. STOP asking’. I’m here for it!

I’m so over the Duggar’s acting like they’re some poor, uncultured family. They’ve had so many opportunities and taken so many trips.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Actually, Jinger's whole attitude was that she's used to the question and it doesn't bother her. And she said it might be offensive to other people, not that it would be offensive.

    1. “early intervention” is vital when children are delayed - the sooner, the better. When problems are addressed immediately, the child has a better chance of catching up and developing normally.

    2. @4:03 Early intervention is contingent upon qualifying on the basis of a diagnostic evaluation. Sometimes it means the difference of insurance or the state paying for therapy or not.

    1. What’s wrong with Felicity getting paint on her?? She’s a baby and finger painting is good for broadening children’s texture spectrum.

      Delete
    2. That wasn't Felicity innocently finger painting by herself in order to explore textures. That was Jeremy dragging Felicity through paint on camera on purpose. I have a feeling there was a lot of editing of out-takes. Felicity did not look 100% happy there.

      Delete
    3. You can clean up a baby. I wonder why they showed Jeremy presenting the picture to Jinger on the couch if it was supposed to be for Mother's Day.

    4. 12:14 — I totally agree. She looked uncomfortable and at times distressed. Jeremy just kept laughing and sending her off onto the canvas. Goofy behavior on his part.

  16. I have always liked and appreciated Jeremy but I thought in this episode he was so inconsiderate, bordering on being a jerk. Even Jinger failed in this scenario. When you have guests, especially ones that are as helpful as Joe and Kendra were, yes, it is a great idea to take them out for dinner. But it would be nice to make a special effort to take them to a place that has food of the guests’ choosing, in a place where the guests would feel comfortable. First of all, Jinger and Jeremy were a little condescending in the way they spoke to Joe and Kendra about being at a high end restaurant. Also, the Vuolos should have found a sitter. Kendra said she was self-conscious about bringing a baby to a such a restaurant. But worst of all, to let them be presented with grasshoppers and frog legs when they knew Kendra was having nausea issues was just plain rude. The Vuolos could have eaten that fare themselves ( if it was indeed a surprise from the chef) but then ordered palatable appetizers that Kendra could eat. The whole intent of being a good host is to make certain that your guests feel welcomed and at ease. I thought this dinner was less about thanking Joe and Kendra than it was Jeremy trying to look “worldly.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. TLC is the one who orchestrated the frog and grasshopper legs, not Jinger and Jeremy. Also most mothers don’t feel comfortable leaving their child with a stranger, so I think it’s very unlikely that Kendra would have left Garrett with someone she doesn’t know.

      Delete
    2. The show's producers ordered the appetizers for the shock affect. Much of the show is scripted by the "higher-ups."

      Delete
    3. Another case of the producers finding an opportunity to make the Duggars eat something they're not used to.

Not only was that whole restaurant thing weird, but the way they made the Duggars try to explain Felicity's art, too. Purposely show how little they know about art. Just like the food questions and the Greek gods question.

    4. I lost a lot of respect for Vuolos... Jinger is becoming a snob. Maybe she always was.

    6. The chef sent out the appetizers. Jeremy asked what it was before they ate the frog legs. Kendra and Joe chose to eat them. They didn’t realize what was in the tacos which I think was poor taste on the chef’s part. I don’t think you expect that at a nice restaurant!

      Delete
    7. Maybe they took them there because, get this, it's their favorite restaurant. They actually said that on the show.

    8. REALLY.....worldly??? Because he loves to take Jinger out to nice places for dinner....and they love exploring new places and doing new things together .... sounds like a beautiful marriage to me!!!!

      Delete
    9. Did you all see the same episode I did? They said it was their favorite restaurant and they said they know the owner and he surprised them with the unusual appetizers. How did that make them jerks, worldly, and snobbish?

      Delete
    10. 4:04, in what way is Jinger a “snob”? Because she wears nice clothing dm takes care of herself? That’s not being a snob, people should be doing that anyways. Jinger has always seemed to be a sweet and loving person.

      Delete
    11. The Vuolos are becoming snobbish. Jeremy’s ego is through the roof and Jinger is right behind him. I went back and watched a couple of clips from just before she met Jeremy and her attitude was so much more humble.

    12. I wonder then if he takes Jinger to do ministry work? Isn’t it funny how he goes from Jim Bob asking him how he’ll support Jinger on a pastors salary to him taking Jinger to extravagant places?? And not just restaurants.....

Maybe they knew that people would criticize and bring up his speech delay, and they wanted us to know they are aware of and working on the problem. No matter what, Ben and Jessa are the parents and will make their best decisions about their children.

    2. 11:11 - I am the op. I do NOT say negative things, as a rule. I like Jeremy. It just seemed to trouble me that Jeremy wasn’t as considerate a host as he could have been.

    3. 8:58, did you comment on the right post? The OP said that Jeremy was not inconsiderate.

  20. I liked the show and loved seeing Anna and the kids. Next week's marriage retreat looks fun. I wish I had had someone to help me and my spouse navigate those first years. I think it would help each couple communicate better especially done by Kendra's dad.

  21. Anti negativity at 10:02 - I am the poster above. I rarely criticize this family. They are such good people, and usually have only praise for them. But I felt Jeremy was out of line because he knows better. He is such a nice guy. Sometimes even the best people need reminders.

    1. How was he out of line? He didn’t order the appetizers. The owner or chef sent them out. He told them the first item was frog legs. They then made a choice to eat them. After they ate the tacos, Jeremy asked what they ate.

    2. Knows better than what? What did he do?

  22. I liked the episode. I hope Henry improves speaking soon. Maybe he is already doing better.

    1. I think if he wasn't-that would never get on the show. Well done, Jessa, anyway. I do believe it is hard to say openly there is a problem with your kid when others have perfect babies.

    2. I agree 5:56. I think it was admirable of Jess to share her concerns for a lot of reasons.

  23. I did not get it - I thought they eat frogs in France, not in Texas? Was it so necessary to have this kind of "funny" meal with a pregnant woman? Texas is famous for a lot of good food, not fried grasshoppers...

    1. People in the U.S eat frog's legs.

    2. I have family that live in Texas. They eat frog legs. I have a sister that lives in Arkansas. She eats frog legs, squirrel, deer, etc. So what is your point?

  24. Why didn't Jinger just answer the question about having more children? They usually skirt questions that are direct and require a real answer. Jana does this a lot too and it's annoying, quite frankly.

    1. Yes. I agree 2:42. She doesn’t need to answer to us, but it’s sort of rude to your sister-in-law.

    2. There is nothing rude about skirting a question you don't want to answer. Sometimes people ask questions that are none of their business, or in this case, something they don't to put out there as fodder for the public.

    3. So, you think people are obligated to respond to any quesiton they're asked? Some things are personal. When people used to ask me when we were going to have kids, I'd just say "Who knows?" and leave it at that.

  25. Just this evening watched this episode in the UK & I must say I couldn’t believe how much Henry reminded me of my own son. Watching him always takes me back to my son as a toddler as he looked very like Henry with his light blond curls & chubby cheeks. But this evening watching his speech I was reminded even more of my own son as he was exactly the same as Henry. At two all he could say was dada & he said bomy for mummy (which stuck for years as I loved it actually). We took our son to speech therapy & they didn’t really do a great deal to help him, he seemed to learn his own mechanisms for learning words & once he started properly getting into more complex vocabulary (around the age of 5) he never stopped. By 8 he was the most loquacious kid in the class. I’m sure just watching Henry he is going to do just fine. Like my son he knew what all the pictures were, just his language was a bit immature for his age. Jessa & Ben were lucky in having a friend that could come to the house to test him as it saves on the stress a child feels going into a strange testing centre with strange people (my son hated it). Also loved seeing Anna on this episode, my word she is looking so lovely lately, she has got prettier over the years & the weight loss really suits her. I must admit I shed a tear at the bit with Joy & Austin, so happily announcing their second pregnancy. It was difficult to watch knowing the sadness they had to come. Can’t say I’m that interested in next weeks episode, not sure why couples that have been married all of 5 minutes need to go to a couples retreat & renew their vows, just seems a bit silly to me.
