Pie for Pi Day

Are you familiar with Pi Day? In math, pi is an infinite series of numbers starting with 3.14, with makes March 14th "Pi Day." Some folks celebrate by eating pie, which is exactly what Josh and Anna Duggar and their kids did. They baked a family-favorite apple pie recipe from Anna's late grandmother.

  2. Curious to know if any of the Duggar families use dishes to serve and eat their food. It always seems to be paper or styrofoam. Is there any reasoning behind this? I also came from a big family (9 children) and we never used disposable tablewear. We also never had a dishwasher. My mother always said she had lots of kids so she would never have to do the dishes. Of course she was joking......... I think! She was the oldest of 11 and grew up with her hands in dishwater.
Anyway, I know it’s been brought up before but just thought I would ask.

    1. I'm not sure why they use paper plates for everything they're shown doing. I think it's rather wasteful and creates a large amount of trash that needs to be disposed of somewhere. I have a dishwasher so I don't do dishes. Just rinse my dishes and run it when it's full.

    2. I came from a huge family and i have 9 kids and we ALL use paper plates, plasticware, styrofoam. And we will continue to do so. It is nobody's business. And we are obviously in the end times so this poor old earth just wont be here much longer anyway😊

    8. I can't believe how many people on here use paper plates. We only ever used paper plates when we went camping. I had never heard of people using them in their home, day to day, until I saw the Duggars.

    9. I don't use paper plates unless we are having a picnic. I think it comes down to what you were raised using. We always had glass or China plates and bowls growing up so my siblings and I eat off the same type of plates now. All of our spouses had parents that served the meals on glass and China too. It's just a matter of what feels comfortable to families, wether, China or paper.

    1. It doesn’t take much effort to wash your plates, and you’re doing a great thing for the environment.

    2. Ok, I'll start with the paper plate comments. At least they're paper this time and not that horrible Styrofoam. But you can't recycle paper that had food on it. Have you heard about how some communities are stopping recycling because the market for what's collected is disappearing? Some cities are restricting what they collect now. Some places are still collecting recyclables but throwing it in the landfill. Some waste companies are only offering it so the town will contract with them. There's no easy solution, but using disposable plates is certainly not the answer. There's another modern convenience called hot and cold running water that can wash dishes.

      Delete
    3. 6:32 -- Washing plates requires soap, which is produced by a factory, paper and plastic packaging, usually adhesive and dyes for the packaging, and water, which is scarce in some areas. Also electricity, if you use a dishwasher. Dishwasher manufacturing requires a factory, parts from China, metal work, plastics, electrical wiring, plumbing, etc. I could probably go on, but I think most people get the idea.

    4. I'm a senior citizen and sometimes I use paper plates. Sometimes I will get a pain in my back when I stand and wash dishes. Using paper plates gives me less dishes to wash. Don't tell me to buy a dishwasher. I have no room in my kitchen for one... Jane

    5. The Duggars have two industrial dishwashers but never seem to use them. There are also many hands available to help do dishes in no time, (many hands make light work), they really have no excuse for all the disposable plates, cups and cutlery they use.

      Delete
    6. @9:24 Paper making is one of the worst industries when it comes to amount of water used! So is all the other manufacturing you mentioned. Your sink of dishes once or twice a day is a literal drop in the bucket by comparison.

    7. Not everyone, myself included is an environmentalist. Some people, like me do not care and making judgmental comments about paper and plastic is not going to change anything. Get a grip.

    8. Mackynzie looks so much like her mom

      Delete
    9. 4:31 Pots and pans are not paper. They probably fill the dishwashers up with those plus cooking utensils, etc. When you homeschool and have a lot of people home for each meal, it is more convenient to use throw away plates and cups. Even with a lot of people to help, it would require a lot of time in the kitchen. Maybe they choose to use their time doing other things. Praise the Lord, we all can make our own decisions for our families.

      Delete
    10. I really don't think anyone should tell others how to live their lives. A simple happy photo shared and look at all the judgemental comments.

    12. @9:58 You can't recycle paper plates because they had food on them. But paper plates will degrade much faster than plastic when put in the landfill.

  5. "π" is, of course, more than just an infinite series (adding of numbers is redundant in math). It is essential mathematical constant, given by the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.

Eating pie on March 14 is cute but hardly anything to make a big deal about and is definitely not a celebration, nor should be considered one.

    9. I am astounded at the comments here that dismiss algebra or advanced mathematics as "useless". Not only are the hard sciences mathematical, but many other fields as well- computer science, music, art, psychology and statistics, plumbing, construction, electricity, etc. If you blow it off as being unimportant to your child, he or she may never have the opportunity to explore professions they may find fascinating and fulfilling, as well as find success in them. Even if you never pursue a related profession, algebra provides a new way of looking at things and challenges our thinking.

      Delete
    10. My whole family does the same type of work that the duggars do, and if the rest of the family follows, they don't need to know "pi". It has nothing to do with their job duties at all and i'm pretty sure jim bob doesnt use it and he seems to be pretty successful with his real estate work

      Delete
    11. Pi is not algebra or advanced math. Pi is geometry. The math of a circle. Your car wouldn't roll down the road without pi calculating the proper wheel and tire size. The Duggar mechanics and the pilot should all be required to know and use pi. The home flippers who cut or fit anything curved should know it. The people who visited Greece on their honeymoon should know who calculated pi.

      Delete
    12. Algebra is used in an increasing number of careers and yes, it is useful in everyday life. You use basic algebra in calculating prices at the store, in home repairs... And pi is used in geometry and trig, not in algebra.

For those who think that knowing about pi is not important, that is like saying math literacy is not important. Math literacy leads to technology literacy that means better paying jobs. It is no wonder that the US students are rated so low in the world in basic math and literacy skills with attitudes like that.

      Delete
    13. @7:08 and 7:10 There are lots of jobs and careers that require math! It doesn't feel that way because with most of what you encounter every day, the math is already done for you. Imagine if you had to figure out how to do the math every time you turned on your phone or computer, started your car, set the thermostat up a degree, took your morning pills, turned on the TV, cooked your breakfast, pumped your gas, scanned your groceries, had a medical test, had your teeth fixed, flew anywhere... Has your roof fallen down lately? No, because someone did the math on those roof trusses and beams!

    15. I use algebra constantly for my personal finances. That however doesn't use pi. Home renovation or anything working with circles it comes in handy. Algebra is simply and let's me theorize things. Like if the couch is this size how much space do I have left for a chair. X (chair)= wall length - counch length. I think people often do this in their head, but it is indeed algebra.

    16. Two of my four children took algebra, advanced algebra, precalculus, and calculus (both algebra based) in high school. My daughter is now a math major, studying to be a statistician and my son takes it to challenge himself.

    17. For those of you who think Algebra, geometry and trig are not important and not necessary, you better hope that the next time you are on a plane that the pilot understands algebra, geometry and trig. Try navigating without trig. The next time you walk into ANY building, you better hope that the engineers who designed and built that building understands algebra, geometry and trig or else the building might fall down. That they understand air flow in pipes and can calculate rates. The next time you turn on the weather report, you better hope that the Meteorologists who developed the weather models understand algebra, geometry and trig. The next time you use a GPS, you better how that the engineers for worked on the mathematics to allow you to pinpoint your location understands algebra, geometry and trig.

Algebra is not only necessary but it and geometry and trig is the bedrock of all technology.

    18. 5:41, I think the people saying that mean it’s not important for EVERYONE to know. Personally I think it should just be taught in college if you’re pursuing a career where they are necessary.

    20. Two quick comments: Speaking as someone who loved English and hated Math all through high school, I found out I loved Math too when I actually got a college professor who knew how to teach Math. Some Math teachers have a Math gift, but not a teaching gift-two totally different things. I home school and because of my bad math experiences throughout high school, I am passionate that my teen understand her math (not love it, agree with it, or even necessarily like it), but I do want her to understand why we're doing what we're doing when we learn a concept. Yes, some of Algebra/Trig/Geometry/Calculus does seem irrelevant, a waste of time, and "useless in the real world". But as I tell my teen, higher math is more about teaching higher order thinking skills (logic, reasoning, deduction, problem-solving, using what you already know to determine what you don't know or gather/understand/apply information to help you solve a real-life problem or effect a desired outcome).
It's biased and ignorant to assume that home schoolers get a sub-par education simply because they're taught at home by aomeone. All it takes is someone who likes to learn new things sharing that excitement and knowledge with someone else...someone like my college Math professor. Home schooling doesn't necessarily mean you teach every subject yourself. You can teach to your strengths and co-op with other parents to teach "weaker" subject material,or use any number of excellent online teaching programs, or build up your skill set by studying the course material ahead of your child. None of that equals an inferior education-that's exactly what the public school system does. The Math teacher doesn't typically teach English/Music/Art/Science...he/she relies on someone else to teach the subjects that he/she is weaker (not as skilled) in. Many public school systems have incorporated computer programs/"learning labs" to teach their students different subjects.

    22. You can be very successful and or wealthy without advanced math. My spouse and i and several family members are well off , with NO advanced math! Is it possible?? Yes!

      Delete
    24. Advanced math is not necessary for everyday life. Thats just a fact

    25. Of course mathisnat used in all professions, however, if you don’t learn math then you are limited in your career choices. When I was growing up my parents would say that girls aren’t good at math. I took that to heart and believing that girls aren’t good at math, I didn’t excel and only took as many math credits as were required to graduate. Several years later I decided to get my bachelors degree in nursing. Guess what? I needed math, specifically advanced algebra and statitistics. I also had to take chemistry which requires math knowledge. I was at a disadvantage but through a lot of hard work and the realization that girls can be good at math, I passed all those courses with very good grades. Knowledge is never a bad thing even if you don’t use it all the time.
      Knowledge is power.

    26. To 2:35 a.m.: no advanced math professions: author, illustrator, artist, preacher, librarian, stay at home parent, film producer, actor/actress, drama teacher, dance teacher, sports coach, english teacher, history teacher, home ec teacher, art teacher, music teacher, gym teacher, geography teacher, janitor, social worker, retail worker, office manager, receptionist, firefighter, detective, police officer, senator, governor, president, cook, seamstress, cashier, 911 dispatcher, farmer, debt collector, telemarketer, waitress, housekeeper, cna, house painter, factory supervisor, restaurant manager, mechanic, musician, speech therapist, special needs teacher, photographer, babysitter, uber driver, taxi driver, warden, security guard. I must stop there but i had to prove my point. It's not real difficult to think of careers where you don't use advanced math.

      Delete
    27. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that most adults don't know how pi is used. And there's nothing wrong with that. People learn it in school, but most jobs don't require it so they forget it. I can't remember the calculus I learned in high school and college because I didn't go in a STEM direction.

    28. Just think, even if you don't end up using it, learning it will help your brain

    29. Anonymous @2:52- Many of the professions you listed require a college degree and most colleges want to see Geometry, Algebra, and Algebra Trig on those high school transcripts. The vast majority will require Chemistry and Physics as well (which need Algebra and Algebra Trig). Teachers, social workers, detectives, governor, senator, president, 911 Dispatcher, Speech Therapist, and Warden are all going to require a solid math background. My neighbor was a Social Worker and Statistics is required. Math and Science are foundational to teaching degrees in my state. Like it or not, the vast majority of politicians are well-educated. Specialized jobs in my area (like firefighter and police officer) require at least an Associate's Degree (math and sciences), plus specialized schooling. In my part of agricultural VA, you'd be surprised how many farmers have agricultural degrees from VA Tech-it's harder to make a living farming these days. Many a pastor nationwide has at least had Geometry and Algebra; most established denominations require their doctoral graduates to have quite a bit of math. Pastoring churches in the digital age requires tech knowledge and a working knowledge of algebra and statistics. Seamstresses use quite a bit of math in calculating yardage, custom sewing, garment tailoring and alterations (adjusting fullness, creating darts, adjusting bodice length/shoulder width, etc.), and custom sewing draperies/bedspreads/quilts. Painters need to be able to accurately calculate area, material costs, wages, and taxes. Office and restaurant managers need accounting principles for inventory control and profit-loss margins. Mechanics must understand and be able to calculate ratios. Any business owner needs a working knowledge of percents, profit-loss ratios, a basic understanding of accounting, and some idea of statistics to be able to take advantage of trends or minimize the impact of trends on their bottom line. We check job listings state wide on a weekly basis and you'd be surprised how many require a college degree these days. Apparently, the logic is that in possessing a college degree it is assumed that you are responsible and reliable enough to at least show up for work. That doesn't necessarily mean that you've learned anything/retained knowledge, just that you've stuck with something for more than a few days/weeks/months. It's become the "gold standard" to measure dependability.

    30. Algebra is NOT advanced math. In fact, kids here take in grade 7. It is basic. And waiting till college to teach it is well, too late.

Of course, not everyone needs advanced math but that is the math one would take in an engineering/physics/math degree program in say, the last two or three years. By the way, high school calculus is NOT advanced math.

People who think that having a basic knowledge of algebra and geometry is not important are kidding themselves. We ALL use algebra, including real estate agents everyday. It would be a poor agent who could not calculate his commission on a house, balance his expenses...

It is like saying people do not have to know how to spell or read because so many people have not read a book since finishing highschool.

And every truly successful person, including Mr. Trump, has to know some algebra or at least surrounding himself with those who do (CPAs...)

    1. Anything that you challenge your brain to learn is beneficial to your brain health, and your sense of accomplishment. It is true that the more you use your brain to learn new things, the smarter your brain becomes because more neurons are firing and connecting. Don't underestimate the power of the brain.

  38. I was required to take two more advanced math courses to receive a promotion as head of admissions in a prestigious college, after i had already taken two algebra classes for my previous position. I can say that never one time have i used anything besides basic math in my career. As anyone who works for a college knows, a lot of advanced math classes are not necessary for certain careers. Even the people in higher authority positions have said that a lot of it is all about money, which is so true. So many students struggle and need tutors and it's really sad that it doesnt need to be that way.

  40. Jesus' earthly father,as well as countless others was a carpenter and they didnt use "pi". I wonder how they all survived at all?

    1. Pi was estimated and used by the Egyptians and Babylonians almost 2000 years before that. I don't think you can claim that a carpenter of that later era wouldn't know what it was and wouldn't use it.

    1. Pi was always there, whether or not those generations realized it. The first rock that rolled down a hill a certain distance demonstrated the ratio of the circumference of the rock to its diameter.

    2. Pi is simply a way enable people to easily calculate the area, volume and circumferences of round objects. It's a constant number. It was discovered and named by Archimedes in the 5th century BC. Wonder how many generations ago that was.

    3. Any round mass-produced object you've ever used was made possible because someone knew how to use Pi. If you used the object, you directly benefited from someone's knowledge of Pi (and Statistics-advanced math). LOL

  42. Jesus is not concerned with paper plates or pi. Some people need to find better uses of their time, like maybe attending church or bible study. How did an adorable little photo turn into all of these pointless comments?

    1. You're right, no one should argue with people who think we only need to know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Anything else is advanced math and it seems no one really needs that in life.

    1. Uhm, you're wrong. He has a degree in Business Administration. In his case, that means Economics, Risk Management, Accounting, Auditing, Investments, Statistics, Marketing & Consumer Behavior, Enterprise Resource Planning, etc. Having a nephew getting set to graduate with a business degree, Calculus was a prerequisite. That's a ton of higher math altogether and quite a bit of it will come in handy to an up and coming Pastor as his church continues to expand.

  47. Anyone that makes or uses something round needs to be able to calculate the area and/or circumference of it. In the 5th century B.C. the Greek mathematician Archimedes found that the number 22/7 or 3.14 could be used to help make that calculation. He called that number Pi. Made everyone's life a lot easier. The use of the number spread throughout the world. So Jesus used pi as a carpenter. Now let's stop bashing math.

    2. Anon 7:34. Of course the older civilizations knew about pi. It's an algorithm for solving a mathematical problem. Archimedes gave it the name pi. Some of the posters here seem to think that using higher level math isn't something all of us do every day.
