Little Duggars at the Park

The weather in Springdale, Arkansas, this week has been mild, so Michelle and Anna Duggar took some of the little Duggar kids to their park to expend their energy.

  2. I envy them the mild weather. We just got another ten inches of snow on top of the foot already on the ground. More coming in a few days. It will be July before it all melts!

  7. I hope they got to play with the other children who were at the park.

    1. They should interact with others (outside the family) rather than isolating themselves. It's rather clannish.

    2. 3:27 Why not? Socialization with those outside of your immediate and extended family helps you understand others and enjoy the world.

      Delete
    3. Exactly, why? They have each other. ❤

    4. 4:38 p.m. They interact with lots of other people - they have church with a couple hundred people, mostly children, for starters.

    5. It’s just a strange response to this picture. Clearly they’re having a good time, but someone seems to know best and condescendingly stated that the trip to the park is only complete upon nonfamilial socialization. Very strange. We have seen time and time again that the Duggars have boatloads of friends. Clearly they interact with others. Still it is not the wisest recommendation to say, “make sure your kids play with all the strangers’ children at the park.”

    6. Anon 6:35. It's neither healthy or normal for children to only interact with their relatives. They need a broader range of social contacts.

    7. All these terrible parents in the world...ones actually hurting their children...and we’re freaking out about whether or not the Duggar children have enough social interaction, when we all know darn well they have more friends than any one of us.

I’ve been praying for friends for myself and for my children for years now. It’d be a blessing to have the social circle the Duggars have. Calm down, people. They’re fine.

    8. You're right, 11:30 and 11:39. The Duggars have "boatloads of friends"...who are all very much like the Duggars.

Kids don't necessarily need to play with strangers at the park, but they sure pick up on what others doing and how others are acting. The Duggars may have gone to the park in the middle of a school day (a public school day) on purpose, to avoid interaction. We all know by now that the Duggars take steps to shield their children from influences outside their own world. That was central to the theme of the early shows!

That method of shielding children is what this conversation is about. Some don't see the benefit of it.

    9. 11:39 here. I understand the sentiments behind the conversation, but I do not understand why a wise recommendation for any parent is to have their children play alongside children you know nothing about. Of course I would not suggest to isolate your children from anyone who doesn’t live life exactly like you do, but to unleash them among strangers? I don’t get it. Michelle was there with a large handful of children, and if they all scattered off to a different playmate, that would be dangerous. It is a foolish thing to let personal opinion of the Duggars’ method of sheltering interfere with the common sense practice of protecting your children in a public place. I don’t mean to be argumentative. I just figured you didn’t fully understand why I said what I said.

    10. Oh no, my mother unleashed me among hundreds of strangers every year, all day long, for most of the year, and I was expected to become playmates with them...it was called school... I'm here to report that I somehow made it through! And I married one of them!! :)

    11. School was where I learned about seders from the Jewish children, confessions and meatless Fridays from the Catholic children, immersion baptisms from the Baptist children, and a host of other ideas that my own church never practiced or mentioned. If I hadn't been exposed to those differences, I would not have understood them and how profoundly important they are to their followers.

There's nothing wrong with exposing children to all sorts of other children, on the playground, at school, or at home. How else do you expect children to learn the social skills they'll need as adults? How do you expect the whole world to get along if we isolate our children and make them feel as if "outsiders" are wrong or scary?

      Delete
    12. @2:37 Ditto. But I’m not making those same choices for my children, and neither are the Duggars, and like you said, somehow they’ll make it through. :)

    13. I’m delighted to hear that, in your experience, elementary school was ab educational experience in which 8-year-olds could magnificently detail doctrine to you and share their kaleidoscope of worldviews. It sounds very much like Sesame Street. I’m glad for you. Others of us did not have an experience anywhere near that and actually only have really negatively-impacting stories. Everyone makes choices for their children based on their own experiences and tries to do what’s best based on them. No one here has suggested keeping children from those unlike themselves, and it’s very reaching for you to insinuate that’s what I mean. All I’m saying is, it is not unwise to protect young children from total strangers, not to keep them indoctrinated but to keep them from potentially damaging people.

    14. @ 6:22 The Duggar kids might make it through, but what sort of people will they turn out to be when it comes to understanding and tolerating people of different backgrounds, different cultures, and different faiths? It takes constant exposure to make that happen. Those mission trips they take worry me... I don't think the trips are teaching a good message about other cultures.

    15. @2:24 I understand your comment and the concern behind it. I even tend to lean to your side, perceiving that the Duggars may need to understand better that judgment is only meant to be for people claiming they’re Christians and NOT people who aren’t Christians. I only disagree with you when you say children need constant exposure to variations in lifestyle in order to be tolerant. I’m from WV. Always have lived here. It isn’t exactly culturally diverse, but I still formed into an adult who loves the humanity in everyone. Since I don’t know the Duggars, though, I don’t know what they feel they can tolerate or accept, and I don’t know what they think. I do know that what you’re beginning to speak about now, though, has nothing to do with my comments expressing concern for letting tiny children be around strangers alone, so I’ll just stop here. :) Have a really good night.

  8. Michelle has a lot of energy!!!! That's a lot of work taking all those kids to the park...and she still looks fabulous!!!! I'd be worn out and exhausted looking. She's amazing

    1. She had other family with her so she wasn't looking after them all on her own.

    2. It says Michelle and Anna took the little ones to the park, so the 5 little ones of Anna had their mom. Michelle had only her two youngest daughters there. So I imagine it was no problem for them.

    3. Well, she had Anna at least, but that's still a lot of kids for two women!

    4. She always has help with her children. Jana Jill Jessa jinger and joy were like second mothers. Jabs is the main source of help. Johanna is growing up and is able to help more now.

    5. I taught school for over 35 years. I had up to 30 children in a classroom and it was just me.

    6. I thought the Duggar kids were so well-behaved that they practically took care of themselves? Why would she need help with those children?

    7. There were 8 children, most of whom were over the age of 8. There were at least two adults so I can't see how anyone was overwhelmed with "work" while the kids played on the playground equipment.

    8. 9:23, 8 is a large number of children to keep an eye on, especially if they are on different apparatus at the same time. You have to constantly be watching children in a public place for safety's sake.

    2. She does look great! Her countenance is always so nice!!! I think the love of the Lord always shines on her face.

    3. 11:53- Lots of people are just naturally photogenic and have pleasant expressions. It doesn't necesariliy mean they are shining with love for the Lord. Michelle may or may not be, but the point is you cannot always judge a book by its cover.

    4. The love of the Lord shines on Michelle's face? How do you explain Mother Theresa's face then? The last thing she cared about was how her hair or skin looked, or what her wardrobe was. She gave her life to serving others and serving the Lord, more than all of us and the Duggars put togther! Now there's a saint.
