'The After Show Part 1' Recap

Counting On "The After Show Part 1"
  • The older Duggar siblings are filming an after show with Daphne Oz, a TV host who is pregnant with her third child.
  • Jinger and Jeremy say they feel they are settled into their new home. They have four bedrooms, and Jana says she would love to help them turn one of them into a nursery.
  • Jana is busy with her garden, which doubles as an outdoor entertaining area.
  • Joy and Austin, newlyweds for almost one month, say marriage was an easy adjustment. “I feel like it was the next right thing to do,” says Joy. They have just returned from their honeymoon.
  • John-David has been doing flight training, maintenance on the Duggars’ rental properties, and volunteer work. Josiah is learning to fly with John.
  • Daphne plays a clip that shows Austin’s courtship “proposal.” Afterwards, Joy says she had liked Austin for four years (and kept it under wraps) before he started showing interest in her. Joy admits that she would write her name on the walls of Austin’s flip houses before he even knew she liked him.
  • Daphne asks the Duggars if they ever broke any of their courtship rules. “I haven’t had a chance to break any of mine,” jokes John.
  • “Most of our friends don’t do it this way,” adds John. “We know that we do it a bit different than other people. We’re trying to live our lives with as little regret as we can. It’s not necessarily a bad way to go about it a…different way, but there can be more regret. It’s more about what you can give instead of what you can get.”
  • Joseph says that he and Kendra did not hold hands or say “I love you” until engagement.
  • Daphne plays the clip that shows Jinger and her siblings redecorating Jeremy’s apartment before the wedding. Jinger had shared her tastes with Jessa and let her be the “bad guy.”
  • Later, the topic turns to tater tot casserole. The siblings admit that it isn’t actually their favorite recipe, although viewers assume that it is. When they had visitors to the house, people would always request tater tot casserole, and they got very tired of it.
  • Next season, viewers will see Joy and Austin's rafting/camping bachelor/bachelorette party.
  • As a doula, Jana says that assisting at births has made her want to give birth close to a hospital, perhaps at a birthing center but probably not at home. "For me, I would probably do something a little closer to a hospital," says Jana.
  • "Seeing births kind of terrify me, but I know that it's definitely worth it, so I would be willing to do it," says Joy. Jessa reminds her sisters that there is no shame in asking for an epidural."

  1. Good episode
Provided a few new topics like the new home for Jeremy and Jinger.
Interesting how host was changed out. Hopefully fewer negative concerns from viewer's. Will see ☺️

    1. Four bedroom home right of the bat for a small church pastor! Good thing he married a reality star!

    2. The house is only a little over 1400 sq. ft. and valued around $150,000. Where I live, that wouldn't even get you a 1 br. condo.

    3. 1400 sq. feet is a nice size for newlyweds, and some families with kids would be perfectly happy there, too. I really admire them for living within their means.

  2. Tater tot casserole? Really?

    1. Also known in some circles as hash brown casserole, it is actually quite good. In fact, at Cracker Barrel Restaurants, it is a best seller.

  3. Great episode, I wish the season was longer in the summer when nothing else is on tv. I also wish they would of spent more time on Joy's relationship this yr. I felt it didnt get as much as Jingers did when she was courting/engaged.

  4. I decided to watch this episode as it aired at 8pm, I think I'll stick to dvr as I usually do. The commercials aired on TLC are just awful and immoral, just can't stand it.

The episode was ok, it was nice to get more information from each of the duggars and get a more up to date picture of their lives in some sense.

Poor Jana though, TLC really abuses short clip editing, made it seem like the poor girl was squirming at the question of who she told the gender to.

I appreciated many of the questions they asked, they were different than the usual couch sit down copy paste questionnaires.

I'm looking forward to next season, I hope they show Jana's garden, Austins re-modelings and Johns work/ hobbies.

    God bless yall.

  5. I thought it was interesting that when asked if any of them had broken any of their courtship rules, most of the answers were from the single adults.

  6. I did not watch the episode but I just read the recap. I love how John said that they do things a little bit differently and most of their friends don't do it their way. Sometimes I feel that Jim Bob thinks that his family's ways are the right ways and everyone else's is wrong. I love the way John put it though.

    1. But that is ok. He has to live his own life out with his own passions and convictions. From what I understand they have many friends that are not like them and they get along just fine. The lady that has done parties for them and Joys wedding is nothing like her and they are best friends.

    2. John was pretty articulate with his responses during this interview.

    3. Do you mean Sierra, 12:35? If you think that Sierra is "nothing" like them, then you don't know Sierra. The current Sierra.

  7. I wish I could watch the show but I don't have cable and I can't fined it on DVD. So you guy's should sale it on your web site. I also don't own my own Wi-Fi box so I can't use TLC on the go app because I don't have a user name and password to the Wi-Fi box that I use at home. Because it's under my landlord's information. There are a lot more people out here just like me. So you guy's need to figure stuff out.Because I can't afford cable just to watch one show.

    1. Lily and Ellie dont own the rights to the show. They cant just sell it to you. I know it's frustrating that you can't afford cable but it's not their job to ensure you have access to the show

    2. Purchase episodes on iTunes.

    3. You can't fined it??

    4. This blog isn't run by the duggars, but by 2 people close to the family not related to TLC. So they can't do anything about this issue.

  8. jana is a doula now not that long ago she was a classical pianist and dont forget she has bought a tattoo shop that seems to be forgotten

    1. If she's a doula, then why no mention of her doing it? Just her garden & decorating for her sisters. She needs her own life.

    2. Jana DID take classes with Jill when Jill wanted to learn more about being a midwife. Jana preferred not to be a midwife as she felt more comfortable being a type of support for the mother to be. She was also Jill's accountability partner. However Jana never became liscensed or certified as a doula. All doulas in the state of Arkansas need to be registered and there is no record of Jana. Jana HAS taken a few courses and assisted at a few home births however she is NOT a "real" doula...

    3. Because since Jill moved; Jana has no to doula/accountable buddy for! 😉

    4. She is not a doula. She took classes w Jill as her accountability partner, but she did not pursue an licenseing/accreditation.

  9. So unhappy with this. Daphne Oz is not a good interviewer as she spoke way too much. An interviewer needs to LISTEN, not talk her/himself. Learned NOTHING other than the Vuolos bought a house. Jana is doing nothing but a garden? She still can't answer a question with a real answer. Boring, so boring. Move on, TLC with REAL content.

    1. I wondered why and how Daphne got released from her contract with ABC (on The Chew) to do this show? Wonder if she has left ABC? She sure was bubbly, and ready to share that she thought nothing wrong with "intimacy" before marriage. The Duggar kids didn't want to address that directly...they skirted it and made themselves sound so innocent. I think she wanted a confession from someone. Ben almost had something to confess?

    2. More or less agree. Daphne injected too much of her own main stream world to a group who is not main stream!
Jana is hiding something or she truly does next to nothing. Love her; but....speak up girl!!!

    3. I agree that the content was boring. I wish the Duggars would let go of repeating the same language as their parents and actually be themselves in front of the cameras. They are not relatable at all.

    4. We hear about this garden but don't get to see it? Would be nice to see

    5. At least Daphne wasn't dressed the way that other TLC interviewer dresses. Talk about being mainstream or worldly.

  10. I would love to see a tour of jana''s garden! Wish they would post a bunch of pictures of all she is growing.

  11. Glad Jinger and Jeremy have bought their own home, looks nice. Hope they get to decorate it how they choose to and don't let bossy boots Jessa near it. Jeremy can turn one of the bedrooms into a study and have all his books near to hand and not stuffed into a closet out of sight lol!

    1. You know that "pretend" redecorating is going to have to be a story line next season... And that Jessa and Jana are going to have to be in on it!

      Delete
    2. Oh my goodness! Jessa is quite the 'Princess' of the group it seems!

    3. They visited Waco and the Gaines. I wonder if that trip will lead to something between the Gaines and the Duggars. Ugh.

  12. Sounds like Jana has some common sense ideas about childbirth. Hopefully, she also understands that there is nothing wrong or sinful about choosing to use birth control.

    1. I hope, if the time comes, that Jinger will march straight to the hospital and say give me every pain med you have! Joy, too. I hope neither girl is pressured to give birth at home, with a midwife. Both girls sounded scared of the pain!

      Delete
  13. I dozed on and off last night, but woke up to see Jessa talking to the camera about how Jill had the baby. So when was that filmed? The day of the birth? And what exactly did Jessa say other than a non-specific message about things being OK? Did anyone catch the entire clip?

It's still very odd that Jill has not appeared on camera with the new baby, either in a video or in a Facebook or Instagram post. I get the distinct feeling that either something went wrong medically and they don't want to talk about it, or...there is some security scare/threat and the Dillards have to lay low. Their invisibility right now is totally out of the norm for any Duggar, and it becomes more concerning each day that goes by with no explanation. Jessa's statement was the usual generic "everything's fine," wasn't it? Then why don't a lot of us really believe it? Why do actions (or inactions) speak louder than words this time and leave us with an unsettling feeling??

  14. Why are your shows being aired backwards? Why did Joy get married on the first episode of the season and then they get engaged? Why didn't we see much of the wedding preparations?

    1. They do it for ratings, plain and simple. They don't care about the show making sense time-wise. It's like always eating dessert first. Then you have to face eating the boring vegetables.

  15. Enjoyed the show.focused on positive. Jana will meet Mr.Right when she is ready. I hope everyone appreciates all that she does for them.

  16. Jeremy looked like he didn't want to be there.

    1. He probably didn't. A preacher in his teachings, teaches honesty and truthfulness. They can't be too truthful and honest with their answers in these interviews, sonit should make him uncomfortable.

    2. I'll bet Jill & Derick didn't show up because Jeremy was there, after he preached against untrained missionaries.

    3. I also had the sense that Jeremy and Jinger were not overly interested in divulging personal information about their lives.

  17. Iagree about Daphne ,
she talks too much and her voice is a little annoying 🙄 not so good for interviewing ..
. But I think she got them to talk more . 👍🏼
    ...that was one good point...❣

  18. I admire Jana and John-David, they are the leaders of the family. Both witb good work ethics and common sense. I'm hoping next week's episode will be more fun to watch.

  19. Daphne Oz pointed out that Joy and Austin had only been married 26 or 27 days at the time of this interview, but there was an earlier post to this blog that Joy and Austin were actually in Israel on their one month anniversary. Did they fly home during their honeymoon to do this interview and then fly back to Israel to complete their trip?

  21. Daphne is not annoying. If you don't like it then don't watch it.
