Duggars Throw a Baby Shower

Jackson Duggar: "I wish we had one of those automatic stuffers."
Jana Duggar: "You are the automatic stuffer."

Throwing a baby shower is something the Duggars do well. After all, they have had more than a few babies enter their family. In this clip from Monday's episode of Counting On, Sierra comes over to head up a shower for Jessa Seewald's second child just a few weeks before the birth. (Click here to see snapshots.)

  1. Even though Jessa is so mean to Jana, she still works so hard for her. That's unconditional love. Jana truly has a heart of gold!

    1. Jessa is not mean to Jana anymore. That was when they were little children!

    2. How on earth is Jessa mean to Jana?

    4. When was Jessa mean to Jana?! I think you are confused.

    6. LOVE the Duggars. Love the show. But... have to agree. :/ Jessa was my favorite when I was a teenager and she was just a little younger than I. Now she has totally lost my respect with the way she bosses people around and seems overly concerned with worldly stuff/keeping up on trends. Jana stands out to me as one she continually mistreats. :( Really sad to see.

    7. I admire Jessa. I think she's a nice person and is kind and considerate to others. I like her temperament. I love her relationship with her husband she's respectful, supportive, and positive.

I loved how she collected gifts for others at her baby shower. A completely selfless act.

    8. I just don't see how she mistreats Jana r the worldly stuff. Have not heard her slating her sister or anything like that.

    9. 8:44 am: Are you talking about when Jessa and Jana decorated the guest house for Jill&Derick? Some people thought Jessa was mean to Jana during that episode because she disagreed with Jana's decorating ideas.

    10. And you know this how?

    11. There's an older episode of 17 or 18 Kids and Counting where it was discussed how Jana used to get frustrated because Jessa was always mean to her (i.e. kicking her bunk bed in the middle of the night, etc.). Michelle advised Jana to "kill Jessa with kindness" and she won't be mean to you anymore. Not sure if it actually worked, but it was discussed in an old episode.

    12. Jessa does seem pretty bossy. She was never my favorite. Jana and Joy seem more real than some of the others.

    13. Anon @ 8:19 I remember that story, Jana had to give Jessa her most prized possession a music box. I always thought that was so wrong of Michelle to do that, she was basically rewarding Jessa's bad behaviour and making Jana suffer in the process. Jessa should have been punished for her bad behaviour, given extra chores, and made to apologise to Jana and moved beds. She needed to know there would be consequences for her meaness towards her sister. Poor parenting by Michelle right there in my opinion.

    14. Jessa seems like someone who likes things a certain way, maybe a perfectionist. I can't fault her because I'm the same way about home decor and certain other things. We're all different. Just because Jessa expresses her opinion doesn't make her bossy.

  2. Is Sierra expecting her 6th child? She looked pregnant at Joy's wedding, not so much here at Jessa's baby shower. Lily and Ellie, do you know?

  3. I would love to know Sierra's soup recipe and the muffin jar recipe. They look yummy. I love how they make a celebration of new life a gift to mom's in need. It is such a lovely example. God bless.

  4. I think they fine now but I agree! Jana is amazing!!

Question, I know they used muffins in the Mason jar dessert, but what is the white topping? Looks too light to be icing. Is it whip cream? Thanks!

  6. I really liked this episode because we got to see more of the younger kids and a tiny slice of life at the big house. I wish Michelle could be more a part of the show, though. The marginalization seems so unnatural.

  7. Huh? Jessa was, like many children, mean to her sister when she was a kid. Your comment implies she is mean now. Why post this, Lilly and Ellie?

    2. I think they said it's July

    3. They have never said when Anna is due, just that its later in the year. I think judging from the last pictures we saw of her shes not far behind Jill, late July early August maybe?

  9. Why are they throwing a baby shower she is on baby #2, for being Christian you sure are being greedy. Normal people only have one baby shower and reuse the gifts from the first child. Nothing like following your teachings and being selfless. Used to like this show now it is starting to stink like last week's garbage.

    1. The guests donated items to new mothers in need. Nothing selfish about that.

      Delete
    2. Might be a good idea for you to read or watch before commenting. She kept nothing. It was a celebration for her and a blessing for mothers in need.

      Delete
    3. Those gifts are not given outright to the mothers, they are earned by the mothers working and then cashing in their special "bucks" at the center. So there is a stipulation to those gifts brought to the shower, not just straight out donating to those in need.

      Delete
    4. Well she must be a good Christian woman because she kept none of it. AND the made gifts for others at the baby shower to be donated later. Her entire shower was focus on others. That my Jessa. Love her

    5. Each child should be celebrated, whether it's the 1st or 10th!!!!
Nothing greedy even if she did recieve gifts!!

    6. I've known plenty of people who have baby showers for second, third, and fourth children. Especially if it's a different gender. I'm expecting my second child and I'll be having a baby shower wether it's a girl or boy. And won't be asking for anything other than girl blankets and bedding bad clothes... if it's a boy I won't need anything but will still love getting my friends and family together to celebrate the new baby.

      Delete
    7. 11:15 - Years ago people only had one baby shower, now it's with every child. It's no big deal.

      Delete
    8. Baby showers are a celebration of life. And in our family, we celebrate every baby by having a shower. It isn't about the material items, it's a celebration.

      Delete
    9. Calm down...she didn't receive any of those gifts. They went to others.

    10. I have six children and my my family and my church gave me a SURPRISE baby shower for every single one of them! A perfect time to get together and celebrate and also you could never get enough diapers right?lol 😂

  10. "Throwing a baby shower is something the Duggars do well. After all, they have had more than a few babies enter their family."

Most normal people consider it tacky to throw a shower for one's own immediate family.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nobody I know finds it tacky.... my sister and I threw each other a shower, my sister in law threw her sister one, and she returned the favor to her as well..

      Delete
    2. Disagree. Where I live, the family always throws the baby shower. It's kind of a scandal if they don't and a friend has to.

      Delete
    3. Really? I love celebrating the birth of a child! I honestly don't care who is hosting the shower - I'm just glad someone is. (I've also hosted some myself.)
I would happily bring needed gifts, fun gifts, freezer meals for the family to use on busy days, etc., and will happily bring donations for the needy, if I'm ever invited to that type of shower.

      Delete
    4. It is against good etiquette to throw family members a shower. Always has been. The only time I could see it being OK is if you only invite family members, and they all agree to the premise of the shower. If you invite non-relatives, it can come across as a gift grab.

Think about it. It's the same reason you don't throw yourself a birthday party and invite people just so you can get gifts. Or throw yourself your own baby shower.

      Delete
    5. Really? Not in my family. Showers are about celebrating with family, not about gifts.

      Delete
    6. Are you sure that you know what tacky even means?

    7. My mom and sister offered to host mine. They were so excited to do so.

    8. My son and wife are having their first baby and my family and friends are asking me when are we having the baby shower, so I'll be hosting the shower and I don't see anything wrong with it on the contrary I'm very happy to do it!

  12. ellie, could you get the recipe for the cupcakes?

  13. I have been a fan since the beginning and admire the fact the Duggars stand on their convictions with out wavering. I know I'm old fashion, but a shower was given by friends not family. I have a problem with the family of the new mother or bride asking hundreds of people to come to a party and give gifts. The argument that families give birthday parties is not any better if you invite a hundred quest.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Regarding brides, I was always of the understanding that a bridal shower is given by the Maid of Honor with the help of the other bridesmaids. In the case of the Duggars, that has been largely their sisters (which is so sweet!). And I personally think it's only natural that if the sisters are throwing a party, the whole family gets involved. At least that's the way it is when I throw parties.

      Delete
    2. No one is required to come, it's up to the people invited if they want to participate. It's really no different than hosting a charity event where you sell food and the proceeds are donated to some charity. It's a way to help people so why are we so critical.

You come, enjoy catching up, get a free meal and dessert, and bring a gift of your choice of whatever amount you choose. I would go to something like that.

      Delete
    3. Hmm I saw people coming together. Catching up. And sharing gifts with the less fortunate. I know people love to critic the Duggars but can't we come up with something true to critic. Nothing about that shower was selfish, and some deserving pregnant ladies will benefit from this. What's wrong with that?

      Delete
    4. We are all human and thank God we don't all follow what everyone else does or thinks is the 'right' (tacky) way. Just think of it this way, what did they ever do a century or two before, regarding baby showers? I doubt they could care less who hosted it, if they had such a thing. Back then, receiving a gift was really appreciated as things were so sparse. They didn't have formula or disposable diapers. Or car seats. I mean really, people just think how blessed we really are. Does it really matter who hosts the party? Our great(great) grandmothers would have loved to have the things we do.

    5. Twiddle Dee is right. Tradition says family does not give a shower. I guess times are changing.

  15. Regarding Jessa being mean to Jana, I think I know why there are comments about it....because YES, Jessa was quite derogatory towards Jana when Jana's help was needed. We have YET to hear either Jessa OR Jill POLITELY ASK Jana, if she would PLEASE help them with something. They have come across on camera as being entitled to Jana's assistance. I have seen it too. That's why people are commenting on it.

  18. Josie usually looks pale and frail. I hope she's OK. They have never let the viewers know that she is, after her...what did they call them, glitches? They of all people could educate the country on preemies and how they grow. They thought it was necessary to go on TV with a special about their other daughters after the Josh news came out. Josie and other kids in the area like her (from that same hospital) should have their own special, too. Think of the hopes and fears it could address for parents just starting on that journey.

  23. I think it's great that they have a party every chance they get. Part of being a Christian is having joy in your heart and it really doesn't matter who is hosting the party. I've been following the family for years and I've never seen Jessa be mean to Jana. However, I have seen them disagree about decorating styles; but anyone with siblings would understand that you don't always agree.

  25. How could anyone NOT RSVP an event that 150 people were invited to? No common sense here. BTW, doesn't Sierra have enough to do with her own 5 children, a house and a husband to take care of? How can she have the time to be concerned about another family's events?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh, let Sierra have some time to do something that's NOT children, house, or husband! I have five kids also, and it's nice to do other things once in a while.

      Delete
    2. It's pretty rude not to RSVP if you're an invited guest, but the hostess should be on the phone in the days before the party, checking if people forgot and if they can come. There's no need to be guessing, a half hour before the party, how many people are coming.

  26. If it's so wonderful for the Duggar girls to have had a charity shower, why didn't they do that for every shower they've ever had, bridal or baby? They certainly could afford to outfit their own first homes or nurseries on their own. They could have been collecting things for charity all along. Now they're concerned with how another shower looks?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wow, do you really want to zap all the fun out of life for people of means? A shower for your first baby is a fun tradition and a way to celebrate a new life, whether you can afford to buy stuff yourself or not.

Showers for subsequent babies are not traditionally done because the parents already have most of what they need. I'm sure this is why they donated the gifts to charity. I think they did it 100% right. Bravo, Duggars.

  27. never ceases to amaze me how people can find fault with everything the duggars do. never say anything nice about them without adding 'but' and interjecting their own opinions about how they should act, what they should do instead, etc. why is everyone so quick to judge in the negative? i wish i had a family like this & would love going to each & every shower and helping with the celebrations no matter how many there were!!
since sierra is such a good friend of the duggars, will you be sharing when she is due or when she has her baby?
