'A New Baby' Recap

Counting On "A New Baby"
-->
  • Jill and Jana are over at Jessa’s house. “Compared to my first pregnancy, this time it’s gone by a lot faster,” says Jessa, who is three weeks away from her due date. The sisters listen to the heartbeats of both Jessa and Jill’s babies. Jill is about 13 weeks along and is already feeling her baby kick.
  • “Knowing that I’m going to walk through this whole labor and delivery thing all over again…I’m not really looking forward to the process,” says Jessa, who had a long and difficult labor with Spurgeon that resulted in an emergency trip to the hospital after the baby arrived.
  • On another day, Jill and Jessa go house hunting. The Seewalds are outgrowing their two-bedroom place, and the Dillards need a home base for when they come back home to Arkansas for visits.
  • “I actually really, really love having a small house,” says Jessa. “But practically speaking…it will be a good idea to have a little bit more space.”
  • The sisters visit “the Bennett house,” a home that Jim Bob just purchased. “Looks like it’s ready for Halloween,” says Jessa. The house, which used to be owned by family-friend Grandma Bennett, has a huge indoor pool in the middle and needs lots of work. Neither of the girls is eager to move into it.
  • Meanwhile, Joy and Austin are in Fayetteville flipping Austin’s fifth house, with Austin’s dad as their chaperone. “Joy is amazing,” says Austin. “She can do just about anything, and if she doesn’t know how to do it, she can learn really quick. She’s such a diligent worker. She’s very thorough.”
  • “I’ve learned that he cannot do two things at once,” says Joy of Austin, laughing.
  • On another day, while Austin is at the house alone, Jim Bob comes over for a tour, and Austin asks for his blessing to propose.
  • Jim Bob pauses, says a few words about Joy and Austin’s relationship, and tells Austin how highly Joy and all the Duggars think of him. “You have Mom and I’s blessing,” he finally says. Austin wants to sell the house before he pops the question.
  • Later, Jana, Jill, Jessa, Joy, and some of the little ones video chat with Jinger. Jill asks Jinger if she’s pregnant, and she looks at her sisters with a blank stare. “Not that I know of,” she says. “No, we’re not.” Jessa says she had told the girls not to ask.
  • Jana comes over to Jessa’s house to help pull all her newborn stuff out of storage and prepare for the home birth. “I think there could be some jealousy issues with Spurgeon when this new baby comes,” says Jana. “He’ll have to learn to share.”
  • Back at the big house, Sierra comes over to host Jessa’s baby shower, which will be attended by more than 100 guests. (They didn’t ask ladies to RSVP, so they aren’t quite sure how many will show up.)
  • Rather than bring gifts for her, Jessa has requested that guests bring donations for Loving Choices pregnancy center. Friends come over to help the Duggars make food and put up decorations. Even some of the boys pitch in.
  • The guests arrive, and the party beings. “It is very likely that my three older sisters and I could be pregnant at the same time,” says Joy.
  • Instead of playing games, the guests put together gift bags for the moms at Loving Choices. Jessa and Ben know that their baby is a boy, as do Jana and Joy. Joy says she told Austin, and Jana says she told someone but won’t say who.
  • Later, several of the siblings hang giant plastic bags filled with balloons (one of pink balloons and one of blue) from the ceiling for the gender reveal.
  • Jessa and Spurgeon video chat with Jinger, who is helping Jeremy start a Spanish ministry at their church. “I don’t think I’ll be video chatting while she’s in labor,” says Jinger. “That’s not quite my thing.”
  • Jessa, Ben, and Spurgeon go to Tacos 4 Life for a family date night. The Seewalds say they plan to transfer to the hospital if the labor goes as long as it did last time.
  • Jessa's water breaks at 11pm, four days after her due date. A few hours later, Jill, Michelle, and Jana head over to assist, as does an additional midwife.
  • This delivery is much quicker than Spurgeon's. When Henry arrives around 4:30am, both Jessa and Ben start crying. The emotions continue while Jessa goes through post birth, as Ben prays that they won't have to transport to the hospital. Everything ends well, and Spurgeon surprisingly sleeps through the entire birth.
  • The next morning, Jessa and Ben share the gender with Justin. Back at the Duggar house, everyone makes their guesses, and Justin pulls the cord that releases the blue balloons. "I was kind of having some fun with keeping it to myself for a second," says Justin. Unfortunately, the whole bag of balloons falls, but the moment is still exciting.
  • Spurgeon meets his brother when he wakes up later that morning. The introduction doesn't go so well, and Spurgeon seems to be a little upset that Mommy is holding another baby. But the Seewalds are confident that the boys will be good friends.
  • "This home birth experience was the ultimate," says Jessa. "Not that I didn't wail and scream a whole lot, but there were no complications..."
  • That afternoon, the Duggars come over to meet the baby. Jessa and Ben decide on the name Henry Wilberforce about three days after the birth.

  2. Calling 911 for an ambulance transfer because you weren't responsible enough to deliver at a hospital is very selfish and wasteful of emergency resources. Hardly a wise or mature backup plan.

    1. Nothing at all selfish about it!!!! Do you realize how many women have homebirths??? I've had 3, no complications 😉

    2. Home births always have an emergency back up plan. In the uk you can opt to have one but they will always transfer you to hospital if you 1.need pain killers other than gas and air 2. There are complications. It does not waste anyone's time if anything it makes the hospitals life easier as the longer you labour at home the better!

    3. As a nurse, I see multiple perspectives on this. Sadly, the hospital isn't"fool-proof" either. A friend's of mine just had her baby die in childbirth, and they were at the hospital. Though I will easily agree, the hospital is safer, it's actually NOT irresponsible to have an ambulance as a backup plan if one is planning a home birth, it's good forethought. Anyone who DOESN'T have a backup plan is the irresponsible one. And it's NOT wasting resources either. An example of wasting resources would be all the drug users who OD, and expect to be revived by EMS over and over again! The EMTs are available to those who have unexpected emergencies. Don't assume you know the reason they are choosing a home birth either. Though I'm not saying I know either, some do it for financial reasons, others for religious reasons, etc. Though I wouldn't do a home birth, and apparently you wouldn't either, it's not a sin, it's just a risk. And a risk that some people, like Jessa, are willing to take.

    4. Birthing a natural and normal experience. I'm a birthing nurse and love when mothers are empowered to make their own choices about their own birth experience (including home births and no medications). I'm so glad Jess's got the birth experince that she wanted, because there's nothing more empowering that that! It's absurd to say someone isn't being responsible for not delivering at a hospital. Knowing when to call for help is a wise and mature plan, you've got it wrong.

    5. I think it's a very personal decision where a woman chooses to deliver. Hospitals can be very dangerous places with infections levels. If the pregnancy was healthy and low risk, it may have been a wise decision to give birth at home. I'm sure the decision was made after seeking medical advice and much research. There was no way to tell that she would have the blood loss she did. Some women also find that the hospital birth process is less personal and that their consent is not always asked for before a procedure is done.

    6. In my opinion the Seewald's are being as responsible as they can be by having their children at home. If they can play the odds and run the risks successfully they save a lot of money. That money will be in their emergency fund as security to help if they have a crisis in the future. Hopefully never. I think their judgement is good because they managed fine. Jessa is brave and she done good!

      Delete
    7. What are you talking about?

      Delete
    8. Wow, a little judgmental there? There are some legitimate reasons why women choose to have a home birth; it's not necessarily being irresponsible. Also, I'm sure they had to pay for the ambulance ride. We did when our son required help and we had to call 911.

    9. About 30 years ago I planned a home birth for my daughter. I used a nurse midwife service that was associated with an obstetrics practice ( which means they had pre arranged physician backup), had hospital admitting privileges, and required that their home birth clients be within a 15 minute transport range of the hospital. I had a choice of having these midwives deliver my child at home, at their birth center, or at the local hospital, though if I had had any risk factors or pregnancy complications they would have required me to use the hospital. They had all of their clients fill out the paperwork for being admitted to the hospital well in advance, just in case transport was necessary.
There was absolutely nothing irresponsible about the way this practice handled home births, and there are many others like it.
My grandfather was a highly sought after and respected obstetrician, and he was very impressed with the quality of care I received, and was fully supportive of my birth plan and choices, even though he only delivered babies in the hospital.
Home births, like pregnancies, can be handled responsibly or irresponsibly, depending on the choices of the participants.

    10. Grief let people decide for themselves! Births can go wrong no matter where they deliver...

    11. Jessa and Ben are adults and get to choose for themselves where they will have their children. Ambulance rides are extremely expensive. No one chooses lightly to call one. A lot of people experience complications with their first child and not when they have more.

    12. Anonymous: "If they can play the odds and run the risks successfully they save a lot of money." You do realize the odds and risk you write about is the life of the mother or her baby - right? Lucky for her it went well, last time it didn't and she could have lost her life. Blood transfusions are no joke.

    1. actually, austin is correct. in the some places in the south, it's mr in front of a mans name & miss/ms/mrs in front of a womens name if they were introduced or known that way. when our kids played sports, i was introduced as ms darlene & my husband as mr (or coach) mike. it was said as a sign of respect, not because we were the kids parents, but with the familiarity of us all being together quite often.
my guess is austin has probably referred to him as mr duggar his whole life but now that he is an adult, he may not be quite comfortable yet with calling him jim bob without showing him that little extra respect. a lot of those kids are adults adn they still call me ms darlene

    2. "Mr. Jim Bob". Addressing someone in this fashion is very common in the South. It exhibits a rare combination of familiarity with respect.

    3. i feel as though it should be mr duggar just to be more polite. just my opinion.

    4. Actually, in the South, this is very acceptable. More respectful than just the first name and more familiar than the last.

    5. In the South, it is Mr. Firstname or Miss Firstname.
My pet peeve is with "you have mom and I's blessing". Ugh!
Either, "Mom and I bless you" or "You have mom's and my blessing."

    6. 😀 Using a first name with "Mr." as a title is less formal than using the last name, yet more respectful than using a first name alone. I know many people who use "Mr." with a first name. It's really ok!

    7. It is often said that way in the south.

    8. Why are so many people so not picky about what choices the Sugars make? Some of you people who comment need to find something better to do than pick apart another family's lives. None of us are perfect. No one will please everybody. Let's just accept that and show some grace towards other people, especially since their choices are really none of our business.

    17. It's not just a southern thing. In northern urban areas they do this as well. My daughter's children and her friends children always refer to any parents as Ms (first name) and Mr (first name). It is a good balance of familiarity and respect. Most pastor's I know go by Pastor (first name). Teachers, however, still need to be addresses using their last names.

Now I am from Oregon but really a stupid troll can complain about how someone says something they don't agree with? Really? I am so tired of mean people pick n on this family! They are part of something our American family! God bless the duggars! Tolerance goes many ways besides those who are gay!

    21. Good words Just a mom who cares. I'm from Texas and Mr. First and Ms First is very common. Really not worth the debate.
I like the familiarness of the terms better than Mr. Last and Mrs. Last. (too proper) They are family now and as soon as they grow more "family familiar", they'll probably even drop the Mr./Ms. and just use the given names or even opt for "Mom" or "Dad". And as grand children arrive, maybe go by the name the grandchildren call that grandparent. Some of my daughters in law call me Granny. It saves loyalty to their own mothers. One of the " 'nother mothers" calls me Granny and I call her Nonnie...with love and closer familiarity. We are all family. I love it. Makes me feel even closer to my son's mother in law...after all we became related at our kids' marriage altar too. Love to all the Duggars and extended families...<3

    1. Most missionaries are not part of a tv show. I am sure they are being paid for being on the show, so it makes sense for them to spend more time in the United States.

      Delete
    2. Totally agree with you. You also cannot have the spare change lying around to buy a house, and be asking others for donations to support you while you are home, you should use your own money for that. I keep hearing that Jimbob owns so much property, infact he owns a large house right next door which I assume is where the Dillards are staying at present. As you say if the Dillards are home 6-9 months of the year they cannot be taken seriously as missionaries, at best they are tour guides for SOS.

      Delete
    3. They should take down that embarrassing Donate button from their website. They are in no need of donations for a mission trip they don't seem interested in any more. Derick should be working full-time to support his family, and to fund whatever trips he wants to take in the future, now that he's back in the US. The hardest work we've seen him do lately is pushing a stroller around Silver Dollar City. There's no way my conscience would allow me to pose for pictures there (or go on my own TV show) knowing that somewhere, hard-working people were being asked to give me money. That is beyond tolerable, and not very Christian either.

      Delete
    4. Most missionaries don't have pounds of makeup on either! I agree that it's a noble ministry, but most missionaries don't come home so frequent. They could do plenty of mission work in the U.S. also. It's risky to goto a different country now. They have Christian locals there who serve as missionaries so it's not like they have never heard of God. Those that don't believe are not going to believe because some missionary tells them.

  7. Did we really need to see Jessa's wedding AGAIN? Too many recaps and wasted time babbling about nothing, really, just filling air time until the birth. Another snoozer. This is 8 months after the fact; as it was 3 weeks before her due date as stated. Come on, TLC, this needs to be perhaps a month after the fact. Just too old news.

  9. I wonder if the Duggars realize that the center they made those bags for offers pre- and post-abortion counseling? Also, the gifts they gathered aren't given directly to the pregnant or young mothers. The women have to earn "Mommy Bucks" by working, and then they can spend those bucks in the "Baby Boutique." They didn't make this clear on the show. By leaving out that fact, they made it look like those things were going to help pregnant women, no strings attached.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Doesn't matter! Those items still go to needy moms!

      Delete
    2. Many pregnancy centers offer that counseling. I volunteered with one. Completely prolife. Judgement free.
My son built their "baby boutique" as his Eagle project. The way it works usually is the ladies take parenting classes (nutrition, baby care, etc) to earn the points or "dollars". Win win! They get knowledge to hopefully be a better parent and things they need for their babies!

      Delete
    3. If it is like the center in my town, they don't have to really work for the baby bucks, they just have to watch videos or attend classes.

      Delete
    4. Sadly, but that is why I don't believe in donating to any type of foundations it seems to me like there is always someone making a profit out of it, and donations never gets to the hands who really needs them, that's why I always pray to the lord to lead me right into the person the lord wants me to share my blessings with, it could be financially or just a box of dippers , prenatal vitamins, clothing it always worked for me that way ( family is a different thing) I always pray for someone who I'll never see again that way they would be thankful to the lord and I would feel better.

I feel bad for jessa, because I'm pretty sure she meant good and if is true that all donations didn't go directly to new mothers in need, hopefully this won't stop the duggars family from sharing their blessings with others in needs!
      Good job Jessa!😊🤗
May our Lord bless you and your family 🙏💕

    5. So, you mean the women have to work to earn the new car seat, stroller, or other baby supplies they need? They don't just get the stuff, for free?

Huh, come to think of it-that's exactly how I got stuff I needed for my baby too! I WORKED AND EARNED IT!

When you just hand things out-welfare-it does not one any good. Not the giver, not the receiver. Not the mother, not the baby. Not the individual, not society.

Start working for what you want people. Sounds like a great pregnancy center to me! And I'm sure it's not the only one run in this fashion.

      Delete
    6. Those things ARE going to help pregnant women.

      Delete
    7. Oh, that's horrible! They actually make them work to earn things?!?!

What is this world coming to? I can't believe that people are no longer willing to work to earn what they need.

      Delete
    8. Well I get that there has to be a system or else it would be difficult to allot the gifts to everyone who probably hits those birth help places up for stuff.

      Delete
    9. The only pre abortion counseling that place does is to try and change the mind of the women wanting the abortion.

      Delete
    10. The items are going to help the women. What is wrong with them having to do things to earn what they get? The Bible says if you don't work, you shouldn't eat. They probably aren't having to work a job to earn the Mommy bucks but do workbooks and studies. The items are then still free to the mothers, while other worked jobs to purchase those items.

      Delete
    11. That's how most centers work, so I don't see why the Duggars would need to give a full explanation. I'm curious, did you have this knowledge previously, or did you look up the center's rules trying to find things to complain about the Duggars?

    12. 8:55, I have to agree with you, the only genuinely giving person who responded. I too believe in giving directly to the person who needs something. Many times I've anonymously mailed gift cards or grocery cards to someone I've heard of who has a need. I've paid electric bills anonymously. I've left bags of food or new shoes on doorsteps at night. I believe in cutting thru the red tape of organizations and helping someone directly.

The rest of you, shame on you for your sarcastic attitudes about giving. Heaven forbid you're ever in need, down on your luck, unable to work, ill, at wit's end, and in need an angel to appear in your life.

    16. I have been to a cpc a few different times early in our marriage. The places that we went to gave each mom a gift bag with goodies. I didn't have to "earn" it. When we had Medicaid, at the Health Clinic they made us earn "mommy bucks", but I never experienced this at the cpc. One even gave me maternity clothes and a really nice Ameda electric breast pump! So I wouldn't make assumptions that the ladies had to earn the gift packs that were made at Jessa's baby shower!

    2. Maybe the midwives did not want to be filmed or identified. :)

    3. The midwives are entitled to their privacy. Why do we need to know who they are?

    4. It's fine to have a vback at home, as long as you are approved by your doctor. As far as the midwives, maybe they just don't want to be on tv?

    5. They both had issues with the first babies. Now it may be easier, I don't know.

  21. There sure are a lot of different views on the right way to give birth! How about let everybody make their own choices and leave it at that. To get your feathers ruffled over what someone else does seems like a waste of energy. You aren't going to change anyone else's mind, let alone the Duggars.

  22. Wow. I didn't realize how tramatized she had been by Spurgeon's birth. I knew she had complications but didn't know how much they had scared her. She was brave to have another child so soon after.

    1. They don't believe in using birth control so the fact she got pregnant so soon after Spurgeon isn't really all that surprising. Its gona happen if you don't take steps to stop it lol!

  23. I love watching the Duggars, but I want to say, I'm getting tired of watching reruns of previous shows within the newer shows and the producers silly interview questions to the young adults. It has become boring and too bad, because there are lots of other things they could feature. Maybe reduce the time to 1 hour or 30 minutes.

  25. I'm curious as to why Michelle was carrying a ThirtyOne thermal tote as a purse? The Tote has a thermal liner; does anyone think she needs to keep medication cold?
