A Heartfelt Hug From Mama Duggar

"Seeing everybody come up and realizing that they all knew about this all along, I was shocked that they did not let it out before. This was definitely by far the most memorable trip in my life."
-Jinger Duggar

Yesterday, we relived the moment when Jinger says yes to Jeremy Vuolo's offer of marriage. Today, let's take a look at what comes next, including the heartfelt hug that Mama Michelle Duggar shares with her newly engaged daughter (video below).

  1. Why is a mother hugging her newly engaged daughter so newsworthy? It's done every day, somewhere.
Why doesn't this blog use the term "mother" rather than "mama"? I think it would be more adult and appropriate to use "mother". Thank you.

    1. I thought it was special, because you don't very often see Michelle hugging her kids... it's always Jim Bob hugging his daughters. It was very special to see indeed.

    2. I agree. Michelle isn't affectionate toward her children. Maybe she is regretting such rigid rules and trying to show them more love.

    3. Except in their case, it's usually a curt side hug at best.

    4. It's noteworthy because it's a real genuine hug. Not this "side hug" rule the entire family follows. I think it's the first frontal hug from michelle ever filmed. It was such a breath of fresh air to see real emotion that wasn't scripted or withdrawn.

    5. This family is from the south. They call her Mama. it's not about the blog.

    6. I thought it was nice to see as well. I agree we don't see Michelle on film hugging her kids often but I know she hugs them ALL the time i'm sure, its just not filmed often. And to the Anonymous 10/13 @ 11:58, Mama is used alot in the south it has nothing to do with maturity level, it has to do with what part of the states and the world you live in. If you personally like to say "Mother" that is fine for you,but they prefer "Mama" and that is fine for them. My mom personally doesn't like me saying either, she prefers "Mom".

    7. This isn't a news website. It's a blog about the Duggars. This post was merely a nice recap of a special night and honoring the special mother/daughter relationship they share. Does it happen all the time? Yes. Awesome! But, for this blog, they're going to focus on the Duggar's mothers and daughters. And sisters. And fathers. brothers. sons. And I'm so glad they are!

    8. I wondered the same thing--why giving your own daughter a hug is even mentioned. It is because the these ridiculous side hugs.

    9. What the female parent us called varies from family to family. Mother, Mommy, Mommy, Mama, Ma, etc. Each one is equally "adult" and "appropriate".

    10. You sound very rigid. Mother instead of mama? Really??

    11. I agree. This was a wonderful moment ☺

    12. Im new here. Can someone please explain the "side hug rule" youre talking about--what is that? What is a side hug and why is it a mother- daughter rule? Do fathers and sons do it as well? Is it in the Bible and thats why they obey it?Thanks in advance

    13. It's special and this is the duggar blog not inside edition. Sharing this moment in a blog seems very appropriate to me. And I mean no disrespect but your probably not from the south. If I called my "Ma" mother she would think I was being funny. They are from Arkansas, I'm from North Carolina. We're not hillbillies but we're also not prim and proper all the time.

    14. The side hugs are for courting not family. It's a standard some of them have chosen instead of frontal hugs. It's not mandatory. Jinger hugs her fiance normally. Everyone has there own morals and standards. The Duggars have mentioned that most of them have similar standards but it doesn't mean they're exactly the same. People think their parents control everything. There parents have guided them, and they have chosen to have them be a huge part of them choosing a potential spouse. Side hugs are not mentioned in the Bible but some of them feel it's a better way to keep the relationship less physical before marriage. Probably also an easier way to keep them from kissing if they want to save that for there wedding. I hope I answered everything for you.

    15. In regard to my question about the "side hug rule"-- thank you for replying and for your help! You said its for "courting" couples--then i dont understand because Mama isnt courting the Jinger woman? Or the other children? Other people say its a "rule" the whole family follows-- can someone please help me understand? I also saw the Pretty Jinger wonan do a side hug with her fiances grandpa i think it was?----and they are not courting! Lol thanks in advance- i have just started watching this great show!

  3. After what happened to Kim Kardashian, I'm amazed any TV celebrity is showing off any jewelry on social media these days.

    1. Um..ok... While Jinger's ring is beautiful Kim Kardashian's is worth 4 million. I'm thinking Jinger and her diamond are safe.

    2. It's not wise to flash any jewelry around online, no matter who you are! Nor is it very modest.

    3. Wow...It's perfectly normal for newly-engaged woman to show off her engagement ring.

  4. So exciting!! Do we know when the wedding will be?

    ReplyDelete
  5. You can just feel this young couples urgency to kiss, how exciting for them.It must be very hard to resist when you are so in love, so for their sake a chaperone is wise as they want to adhere to their convictions and stay true, I think they are smart.I wish I would have done something like that,I'm a tad envious. This was the kind a show I have been waiting for all season, I felt emotion along with them, thats how all future shows should be, we should feel something.I wish Michelle could speak a little more though, I don't get the lack of presense/speaking from the parents, the majority of the viewers are the fans so it makes sense to cater to us, ya think?

    1. Urgency to kiss? How about just plain urgency to have one moment to themselves without chaperones and cameras? Is that a good reason to rush a wedding?

      Delete
    2. a 22 year old does not need to be chaperoned by a little kid, think about it jinger and jeremy are displaying such lust as it is do they really want to expose a little child to that? They raised good kids trust them to fight temptation on their own, and if a chaperone is needed for whatever reason then have an adult do it. that is my thought
Congratulations Jinger and Jeremy. you make a nice couple.

  6. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE OF WHAT TO CALL MICHELLE OR HOW/WHO HUGS BETTER??? B HAPPY 4 HER!!

  7. What a wonderful hug from her momma...Jinger will always remember. I loved the propal, Jeremy did a great job and the Lord did the rest by sending the beautiful rainbow. God is good.

  8. I loved it! It's was a great moment! I'm glad you guys singled it out. My mom died of cancer and it's a moment I will never have. So Jinger enjoy your moment with your mama.

  9. I also thought it was special. Often times Michelle only gives her children a quick side hug, no matter what the occasion is, and I thought it was nice to see this kind of a hug for a change.

    1. I've noticed the same thing. I wonder why that is? Is it wrong for a mother to fully hug her child in their beliefs?

      Delete
  10. Because maybe that's what they call her? sigh...

  11. Anon at 11:58. You are so cynical. Not sure where that's coming from but it comes across as petty. Every bride-to-be wants her mother's blessing. I think it's sweet to see them embrace at such an important time.

    1. Yes, every girl should have a genuine hug from her mother at some point in her life, even if she has to wait over 20 years to get it.

      Delete
    2. You have no proof of this, you do not know what goes on in that house, you only see a fraction of their lives, seriously though, be kind to one another and blessings are sent your way...Godspeed😌

  12. "Mama" is a southern thing, but also I am from the north I am in my 20s with a family of my own and I still call my mother "mama" from time to time. Nothing weird about it.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I called my mother "mama" up to the day she died from breast cancer in 2008. I would give anything to be able to call her mama again. There is nothing wrong with adults calling their mothers "mama". Or their fathers "daddy" for that matter!

    3. My mom and her sibling called their father Daddy until he died in his 90s. It wasn't at all babyish. It was sweet.

  15. I don't understand the Duggars' worldly obsession with expensive diamond solitaire engagement rings. How do they reconcile Christ's teachings and their exuberance over an expensive ring that has nothing to do with marriage itself? How do they decide what worldly things to shun - like formal education and workout clothes - and what worldly things to embrace - like college football, engagement rings, and reality television? Clearly they are not turning to the Bible.

    1. I fail to see the obsession you speak of. Please feel free to elaborate. When making charges against someone the burden of evidence lies on your shoulders. As for your other inquiries, the Bible is very clear on modesty. By work out clothes I assume you mean the popular attire of sports bra or tight shirt and skin tight pants. There is no question that this attire is not looked upon with gladness by the Lord. Look to verses such as: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Deuteronomy 22:5 1 Corinthians 12:23 and I said 47:2-3. There are verses such as 1 Timothy 2:9-10 which instructs not to adorn yourself with excessive splendor, but to do what is seen as Godly. The ring we wear as husband and wife is a physical representation of our covenant with God and one another. What the ring is made of is of the choice of the wed as long as it is within the means of the couple I can see no wrong in it. The Duggars watch little television, only when something important is happening. They choose to present their lives as testimony of their devotion to Christ. We have all been called to spread the word of Christ's resurrection to all nations of man, Matthew 28:19-20. Media connects the world today, what platform needs the light of Christ more than the television? We all have Biblical blind spots, but be cautious of judging others. Especially when professing a point from the Bible.

      God bless

    2. 9:59 raises excellent questions.

    3. Seriously...oh brother...first of all the ring is not exuberant or big for that matter, in fact it is on the smaller side, its dainty and beautiful like her...as for them not turning to the Bible...ha ha know one believes that one doll.Maybe u could take a page and read about being so judgemental and you sound a little envious too.Just be kind y'all, it's not hard ,really give it a try.Bless your soul☻

    4. Respectfully, you should turn to the Bible. You would see that Israelite women in Bible times adorned themselves with jewelry. There's nothing wrong with Christians wearing an engagement ring or other tasteful jewelry.

      Delete
    5. Clearly you're not turning to the Bible. The bible says not to judge others. This family is striving to please the Lord, not man. That's what it's all about. They buy used everything almost. I think people start comparing themselves to this family and they want to find fault wherever they can. Most people like that need to take a good look at their own lives. It just sounds like nit picking. I laugh at some of the comments and I hope if the duggars read them they can too.

    6. This family built an empire on being religious and humble, and now that they've gained fame and fortune, their focus has shifted and those old values have gone by the wayside. You don't need a Bible to tell you that. Just watch the show!

  16. I'm happy for them and hope Jinger can grow into a lovely woman and experience life with Jeremy at her side.
Tenderness is always lovely to see between parents and child. I do hope Michelle knows how good it will be for her daughter to move away.
    Wishing them all the best.

  17. I loved the way Michelle hugged her daughter. Its worth mentioning because it's rare. I feel Micheele always hid her light under JB's barrel and perhaps now she's being her own eoman

  18. The "mama" reference is in the headline of the section...not what the children call Michelle.

    1. The children definately call Michelle "Mama" I've heard Jill and Joy say it more than once,as well as the little kids. When Jim Bob is talking to the family about Michelle he always refers to her as "Mama". If you are not a regular viewer of the past original 17 through 19 kids and counting shows you may not realize this.

  19. The last time I hugged my Mom was 18 years ago when I was just a little girl age 7. She died of cancer. So Jinger please treasure all those moments with your Mom you just never know when you will hugging her for the last time.

  20. They are so sweet together! I have been married for 6 years and now 2 kids later, and my husband and I don't quiet act that way anymore. Our love has weathered and is a deeper love than I could have known back then, but it's also sweet to see the giddiness and adoration in this stage of their lives. :) Also, I love her ring. It is very similar to mine!
