Discovery Loses $19 Million...and Counting

During the corporation's quarterly earnings conference call Wednesday morning--documented in a transcript by Yahoo! Finance--Discovery Communications confirmed that the decision to cancel 19 Kids and Counting has been costly. Ironically, the organization suffered a hit of approximately $19 million dollars...and counting.

Andy Warren, chief financial officer of Discovery Communications, Inc., explained that net income available to the corporation was down about $100 million, compared to last year's second-quarter net income.

He revealed that part of the decrease in net income available was because of "higher restructuring and other charges this year of $19 million, primarily due to content impairment charges from canceling TLC's 19 Kids and Counting."

Discovery Communications, the corporation that owns TLC, could face future financial setbacks, as the corporation likely counted on obtaining profits from future seasons of 19 Kids and Counting.

    1. $19 mil is probably like $5 to them. It won't affect them.

    2. I don't watch TLC either anymore. I did watch UP last night and although I enjoyed the Bates they can't replace watching the Duggars.

    3. Ok make a stand but why take off 19 kids and counting, and still naked and afraid. I think that is a double standard.

  2. Let Duggars back on air!! This is what TLC/Discovery Channel deserve for taking them off air!! They could've at the very least left out Josh/Anna. People have shown they want the Duggars on. I'll never watch TLC again.

  3. I'm sure they knew that they would lose money once they canceled the show but I'm also sure they didn't realize how much.

  4. They should try to get a show on UP! Who else agrees? Can we make this happen?? :)

    3. I hope so. I really miss the show and the UP channel would be a great place for the Duggars.

    4. I agree with you. I think UP channel would be good for them.

    5. I thought the same thing! One of the Christian networks should be able to put on the show again. It would be perfect because then they wouldn't be owned by secularism. Would be able to see them pray and we would be able to see them in their normal lives not just what the secular TLC/discovery want us to see.

    7. I keep saying that to the Duggars. I hope they will read our posts. They have a ton of Followers.

    8. I'm in!! We love, "Bringing up Bates!" The Duggars on UP would be a great addition and probably a huge boost in the ratings!!!

    9. I am also hoping for UP to pick up a show on the Duggar Family. Now, as far as Discovery/TLC losing $19 million, I find it poetic. However, I am not going to rejoice in the company's financial hit. That loss impacts more than just the head honchos at Discovery. Instead, I will pray for the employees of Discovery/TLC and the people on their other shows. A significant loss like this, and it is still growing, will impact many lives. Certainly, I wish they had not bowed to outside, liberal pressures and canceled the Duggar's, but neither should hundreds of people who had nothing to do with it be penalized.

    10. I'm in also I want the Duggar family back on TV. I would like Josh and his family to be on also it was 12 years ago, and besides what with all the horrible comments I think he has been persecuted enough!! I just love his little kids especially MacKenzie she is so smart and funny.

  6. I forgot to leave my love & support of the Duggars. I've been a watcher since the beginning. I'm also a fellow Arkansan, and maybe someday we may be able to meet some time. Keep your heads held high, and don't let any of the ugliness get to y'all. Your family is beautiful. I am disappointed that I won't be able to continue to watch y'all grow up, move out/on/wed/whatever God has in store for each of you. Good luck & God bless.

  7. Maybe they should have thought the situation through before making this man as well as his WHOLE family pay for something that he made a bad choice of doing as a CHILD! God has forgiven & shown him a better way. Society seems to be judgemental as tho they are God! TLC...SO SAD YOU DIDN'T STAND UP AND SHOW THAT YOU HAD THE BACKS OF A GOOD CHRISTIAN FAMILY THAT HANDLED THE SITUATION YRS. AGO! TLC MADE IT LOOK AS THO THERE WAS WAY MORE TO THIS SITUATION THAN THERE ACTUALLY WAS! So...I guess now God is showing you as a business the "loss" of a good Christian show that families DARED to watch with small children. They were reaching out to ppl doing Gods work through TLC. I pray another station will pick them up and RUN WITH THE DUGGARS! 💕

    1. Yeah and the good thing about this was they were teaching ppl how to believe in God by reading the Bible.. I mean there were ppl out there who didnt kno wat the Bible even was then wen the DUGGAR FAMILY was teaching about the Bible ppl learned wat it was nd now they're reading it nd they love... Like me Im a Christian nd from the time i was born i actually learned more about it like im still learning nd some of that came from MY FAVORITE FAMILY EVER- THE DUGGARS

    2. I agree. Abd still think the oerson who leaked this SEALED JUVENILE FILE should be prosecuted. If this had been any other "family" on tv, it would have boosted ratings and been apolauded. This .

Here here...any other network would make one big profit, they still have a huge fan following, much to the dismay of others.TlC was becoming more tactless with their programming choices anyways, they have maybe one or two other shows that aren't repulsive. UP seems more like their speed..I just wish more folks had access to that wholesome channel.

  20. As much as I don't wish I'll will towards anyone I say this is what happens. Sorry that this company has lost money but I am more sorry of what has happened with the Duggars. Still praying for peace for your family. I would love it if ya'll came to North Carolina sometime!

  22. We cancelled cable when the show was cancelled.

  23. I quit watching TLC after the news had been leaked ... That person should be put in jail for destroying your son's reputation and crushing your daughters' right to privacy through all this. I don't condone what he did but he was a child and this never should have been put out there for us to see. I hope we can see you on another station, since this one is going down. JM

  24. Hope they continue to lose money. They are punishing the whole family, including the victims. They could have kept the show, sans Josh and Anna and not victimized the girls again

  25. Discovery should have stood by this family. karma! Hope they will go to a different network. Miss their ministry!!

  26. I enjoyed watching the Duggars I am a Christian. I wouldn't stop watching TLC though I dont see the 'eye for an eye' approach and I take sexual abuse very seriously apparently more so than alot of fans.
I wonder whether if this was any other family that didnt have a tv show and we read about incidents of abuse and incest whether people would be saying
'give them a reality TV show?' I think not! I would like to have seen more on the older Duggar children and the Bates family too...Blessings.

  30. Good, I hope they suffer for cancelling 19 Kids, one of my favorite shows! Don't know why UP doesn't pick the Duggars up. They show reruns of 7th Heaven and we all know what Steven Collins did and he was a grown man at the time.

  31. I'm not surprised that TLC is losing money without 19 Kids and Counting-- We don't watch TLC anymore--We are not interested in their new shows like "Jazz"-- Bring the Duggars back!

    ReplyDelete
  32. What blows my mind is they cancel the Duggars because of something that happened during the kids' childhoods (which we know was illegal to reveal) & then put a show on glorifying a confused transgender child. I think UP is a good idea.

  44. Well we had only kept paying for extra cable channels because we loved watching TLC because of the Duggars. Since then we have dropped all but the basic channels

  49. The only show my family enjoyed was the Duggars. Nothing else on TLC is worth watching. I will not support a channel, who turns its back on a family. 53. I certainly miss the show, and I also certainly don't watch TLC as much as I did. It was our favorite show; we would even watch reruns that we had watched before, because we felt part of the family and loved seeing the kids. TLC should have thought this through! The issue that caused all the trouble had been dealt with well, and the person responsible was fourteen!!! I am surprised that the person who made the sealed documents public has not been held responsible. BRING THE SHOW BACK!

  69. Bring them back!!!!!! The situation with Josh has happened to many families over many years. What should be done is to show the counseling and healing process. This could help MANY victims of this. And the network must remember that this happened in his teen years and exploration is unfortunately a normal process for teens!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Yes, they deserve to lose money and should lose more. The Duggers are human and did what any other parent would. The media is making things worse than they actually are... bring them back or get them on another network!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Tlc is being very JUDGMENTAL idk why but channels like this shouldnt have a channel like there are channels that gives the families a break before they can come bac on but if they r going to be a channel thats going to judge they shouldnt be one its so sad to see a family go through this but the thing i like about them is they dont care wat happened cuz they got it situated nd they're letting God take over from this point its amazing how the Duggar Family will always remember wat happened but wont let anything get in the way of their family nd their God.... #Bringbacktheduggars We all love u nd ho

  73. Should have never been canceled!

    ReplyDelete
  74. I wish TLC would not have canceled the show. I miss seeing the Duggar kids on TV. Most of the people who were outspoken about the situation probably were not the ones watching to begin with. They should have just stopped filming and gave the family a rest and let this die down and then restructured the show and brought it back to let people see how a family in turmoil sticks together and supports each other during their darkest hour... I hope another network will pick it up.

    ReplyDelete
  75. They aren't losing money because the show has been cancelled. They are losing money because of how many corporate sponsors dropped out after hearing the news about the family. Unfortunately, keeping the show on air wouldn't have helped them save that money. It was already gone when the sponsors took it with them. With the sponsors gone, they probably couldn't afford to put the show back on the air, if they wanted to.

  76. I stopped watching any TLC shows and discovery Channel. And as I find out more of the companies that withdrew their sponsorship, I will continue to boycott the use of any of their products. 86. I USED to watch TLC everyday specifically for 19 Kids and Counting. This family changed my life in so many ways that I will forever be greatful for and praise God for their influences. It is so disheartening that TLC took a family who has worked TOGETHER through many hardships, obsticals, challenges and have come out stronger individually and together as a family unit. Their beliefes, values, and morals are a monumental display of what they have encouraged in other lives and families around the world which is EXACTLY what this world is lacking so much of in today's society. Do I agree with the decisions that Joshua made? No. I don't. However who are we to judge him and this family? Only ONE has that right and we are not HIM. The only right we have is FORGIVENESS. What's important for us to see is again this family standing together with respect and pride and love in each other and the Lord. It is so sad that the media and others continue to speak negatively about this family. I know that Jim Bob amd Michelle handled a situation that many of us will not ever be faced with the best way they knew how. So please ya'll just live yours and find peace and happiness within. It's not our concern if Josh and Anna take their 2 week old out in public (I did and it being winter time. My daughter is now 19 years old and very healthy!) Or a shirt that was worn by Ben, Or the kids taking care of the many things around the house and each other! I guess if this is wrong ya'll need to criticize me as well. I have 5 children who Lord willing because of the structure and rules, chorse, values, demand of respect for others and themselves and family will grow up to be respectable, responsible and knowledgeable adults. In fact all of my children have multiple chores that are to be done everyday (regardless if needed or not). I call this guidance and the duties of being a parent. I pray every night that maybe one day myself and my children are some how blessed to meet the Duggars to spend time with them, to learn so much more from them, to worship with them. They are a beautiful family who I feel millions of adults and children could learn from. What a beautiful place this world could be if only so. After much said, after TLC removing The Duggars myself and MANY that I know refuse to watch TLC period. To remove such a strong family that has and could continue helping so many lives but to allow bitter divorces, a screaming family where a parent simply throws their hands up in the air and says "what ever" and walks away while the children still continue to scream at that parent and their siblings. Very unfortunate and makes no sense to many that the media and TLC seem focused more on that type of attention than the positives of a family who grows closer for each other during such hard times. Stand strong DUGGARS! YOU'RE AN AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL AND STRONG FAMILY. I PRAY ONE DAY MY FAMILY IS BLESSED WITH MEETING YOURS. MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU!

    Sincerely,
    Jami Gray

  100. GOOD! TLC played very dirty with the Duggars! They did NOTHING to deserve cancellation. TLC canceled the show to appease the radical homosexuals who worked for over a year to have this show removed because the Duggars stated they believe homosexuality is a sin. Hope the Duggars go to another and better network - there is a huge audience for this family's show! My family have decided to never watch TLC again!

  105. It appears that no one sees the issue at hand which is that a family speaks of sin and wrongs of others but they too had sin and wrong doing in their own home. Though they handled it years ago they had to know at some point it would come out. People have nothing better to do then bring others down and if the Dugger didn't share this situation with TLC and give them the opportunity to weigh the options prior to putting the show on then they have a right to pull the plug. What happened completely goes against all of what the show was about. Molestation is a very big wrong and issue so you can't fault the company for taking the route they did. Their should be some accountability on the Duggers not just Discovery. I will say I feel for the girls sisters who now have to relive this issue and the wife of brother if in fact she was unaware of her husband's past. I'm sure this family will be just fine.

  106. Yep......I don't watch TLC anymore. It use to be my go-to channel, but they lost my respect. 19 Kids and Counting was my "draw-in" to that channel.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Glad they are having problems. I have not watched that trash channel since they took off 19 Kids and Counting, its the only show that was decent. I actually have TLC blocked on my TV.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Wished another channel would pick up the Duggars. Miss the show

    ReplyDelete
  109. If Discovery lost 100 million and they attribute 19 million to the loss of 19 kids and counting, that is only 19 %. What kind of restructuring contributed to the 81 million dollar loss? You can't have a show if you lose your sponsorship. That is why the show got cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  110. First of all, I'm sending my love and prayers with God's Blessing to all the Duggars!
Next, I could care less about TLC, I was down to only watching the Duggars, when TLC canceled them,. I no longer care to watch anything on TLC, when they allowed people, cry=babies, plus their sponsers decide what I can watch on TLC, thank you, you freed me from TLC and your products. I pray the Duggars will receive offers from other channels, and never grace the TLC schedule again, TLC doesn't support you, in troubling times. I pray, too, that you have sued the county which released Josh's file, and the reporters, who put it on the air, including Oprah!
May God Bless you Duggar Family!

    ReplyDelete
  111. I agree with Anonymous 17.
And I'm sure TLC will think of something to make up for that loss.

    ReplyDelete
  112. TLC is no longer watched in our home. Put the Duggars back on, and I'll reconsider in order to watch this wonderful family. Shame on you TLC for taking such a drastic step because of something that a teenager did years ago. Hope your revenue continues to spiral downward. If people don't like this show, let them use the remote, change channels and let those who enjoy the Duggars watch them.

  113. I really wish the show could go on. I love watching them. They're the best show on tlc. I love it.

    ReplyDelete
  114. We all make mistakes, we are all human. It's really sad that we can no longer follow this family....they bring something positive to the television and it's a pleasure to watch a loving family. Sadly Josh made wrong choices, he was a child and children do silly stuff......
I wish them all the best and pray that another network will pick up their show - they have a lot of good to give (Josh and Anna included).

  119. Oh my what a shame. That channel has shows I love but flip past until I see 19 kids and counting...again,

    ReplyDelete
  120. Well, that's what you get Discovery! Not to mention ratings are going down. I won't watch TLC again... UNLESS the Duggar's come back.

    1. The ratings have actually increased since the show has been cancelled.

  121. This really isnt big news! Networks lose money all the time with changes and in these large sums, im sure TLC will be fine.

  122. I can't see any harm in keeping the show going. I think it was a knee jerk reaction.

  123. $ 1 million for each child.... n still counting just bring that blessing of a family back on air already...

    ReplyDelete
  124. I stopped watching tlc when they took them of the air in the beginning. I wish someone would put them back on. I don't care what channel but I would love it if someone else took them on. It would serve TLC right.

  125. Not sure you chose the best picture to go with this information. Not sure how that shows grace, mercy and other characteristics of Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  126. They cancel the Duggers, yet air other people (politicians, actors and other people). Talk about a double standard. They are a prime example of what a Christian is all about. God does FORGIVE.

    ReplyDelete
  127. A lot of TLC's other shows were disgusting so I think it's good for the Duggars to move onto a more decent channel anyhow. God works these things out.

    ReplyDelete
  128. Think about it! They punish a whole family for what a child did years ago, even before the show was brought to TV but then they will air shows like Gypsy Sisters with a bunch of drunks and fighting in the family! There's seems to always be someone out there that has to drag someone down if they are doing good.

    1. Josh was not a child. He was 14/15. A teenager!!! He was starting up his own business at 15. Does that sound like his parents thought he was a child?

      Delete
  129. The cancellation of that show had nothing to do with them losing $19 million, it was all the sponsors dropping like flies. There's not a sponsor in the world who would touch that show after the revelations about Josh and the parents cover-up of it, so continuing to produce "19 kids" would've been a huge liability. I know that it makes fans of the show feel good to think that the network is suffering because they canceled it, but the reality is that $19 million is not a lot of money to a network like this.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Please bring the Duggars back. I really miss watching the show. The Family entire family should not be punished.

  131. I used to love this blog, but many of these comments are increasingly upsetting. From supposedly Christian, loving people, many comments are expressing a lot of hate and judgmental attitudes. Regardless of our opinions, I don't think it's right (or particularly Christian) to express such vengeful mindsets.

  134. What the world doesn't understand is repentance. Jesus died so that we could be redeemed from our sins if we repent. Sinners (and that means all of us) can change, see the light, and through God's Grace go forward a new and clean person. I don't condone abuse of a child in any way. But if you believe the words 'by their fruits ye shall know", the son did stop his ways and is a good family man. Let him move forward, sponsors, Discovery, TLC, and the world. I'd like to hear his testimony on the power and reality of redemption. There's a great opportunity here to lift and educate the world.

  136. I`ve read the statements that the Duggars have made since TLC cancelled the show, and from what I understand, they are taking this as God`s will for their lives, and are not upset and angry. They saw this show as an opportunity to minister to people and as God`s will for that time of their lives. They are still ministering to people now, just not from the television, instead, by speaking at conferences, and in many other ways. They should be an example to us of nonresistance, turning the other cheek, trusting God through the trials and tests of this life, and doing good to them that hate you and despitefully use you. Remember, God has a reason for these things to happen, and we should trust him to see us through. Christ doesn`t want us to be angry. In Ephesians ch. 4 vs 26, he says "Be ye angry and sin not."
It`s all right to be disappointed, but we shouldn`t be angry. Please think of it this way: When God closes a door, he opens a window. Maybe God has something better in store for their lives. We don`t know the future, and what`s done is done. Please think about what you are saying, maybe reconsider your actions, think about what God`s plan is and don`t be angry.

  138. This is not the fault of TLC, and yet so many refuse to acknowledge that. I don't care a whit about a network, one way or the other. The thing that most of the comments reflect on this blog is the ignorance of keeping a show on the air when all or most of the sponsors have pulled out.THAT would have cost more than nineteen million - guaranteed! You can pressure, beg, plead, and threaten, but the network has no one to pay the bills for this show. The family needs to move on and start to earn a living in some other way. If you want to boycott something, find out who sponsored the show and do that. Boycotting a network that did what had to be done is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Looks good on them,I have stopped watching TLC until they bring the duggars back.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Anonymous #38 - the Duggars have never denied that they themselves are sinners. Christianity isn't about not being a sinner it is that we recognize that we are sinners and our need for a saviour. Their desire is that others are made aware of their sinful state and that their is salvation in Jesus Christ, through the mercy and grace of God the Father. The Duggars show showed struggles and how, by their faith, they walked in them. Christianity is an acceptance of our inherent sinful nature and a realization that we need Jesus and in order to walk with Him we must repent and ask God for forgiveness and then strive to walk in His commandments. I stand by the Duggars. Josh has been made out to be an adult child molestor - he is not - he was fifteen, he repented, he asked and received forgiveness and has tried to walk a life worthy of Christ since then. Those who haven't yet received God's gift of salvation our blinded to true repentane and forgiveness. May God have mercy on their souls

  141. I couldn't agree more with what the person said about TLC having shows like Gypsy Sisters and other trashy-type shows, yet a good, decent Christian family show gets removed over a private incident that occurred years ago prior to the start of the show. Makes absolutely no sense at all!

    ReplyDelete
  142. I am sickened by the fact that they took off the Duggers, Yet they think it is ok to air shows such as I am Jaz, and I am Cait. Not quit sure what is going on in medialand, but I am thinking someone needs to get a brain, and quit with the super-drama hype.

  143. The Duggars did not deserve to be cancelled. I do not care much for TLC anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  144. I agree!! Let those who don't want to watch it go to another channel!! I no longer watch ANY shows on TLC. I hope the Duggars take their program to the UP network like the Bates family did.

  145. I miss watching the Duggars. I've watched them since their first show! You become attached to shows like this because you watch a couple whose love for Christ and each other is the only show on t.v. where cursing, violence , drugs/drinking, vanity, indulgence and sex aren't the premise of the show. We've grown in our own walk with the Lord watching them and we've learned kindness, patience and understanding, and forgiveness. We've watched the birth of children, their growing years, their marriages and the starts of their own families. How can you not become emotionally involved! Am I happy that Discovery is losing money? No, because Discovery is used to losing money over a show and they'll make it up on another show, that I may or may not watch. But isn't this all the the plans that the Lord has for this family? They were lead to make this show. Maybe now the Good Lord wants them to put the efforts elsewhere. Maybe He wants them to focus more on ministry or on whatever He has in mind for them. They've built relationships and I'm sure have changed the lives of some of the people who helped produce this show. The crew that they've had to grow close to over the years. These are the folks that I'm sad for. I pray they are able to find other jobs and that their families don't suffer loss due to the show being dropped. The Duggars have their faith and love of Christ to turn to. I don't think they're 'broke' like the headlines indicate. And I can guarantee that if someone dug around in any of our backgrounds, be we rich, poor, black, white, young or old, Christian or not, there is something, somewhere, in our families background that would make headlines if we had our own show. It could be anthing from a moestation charge to swiping a candy bar from the grocery store but someday it will come out and there will be someone who will take it and run and try to ruin years of good deeds and reputations. Just my two cents. God's blessings to the Duggars and their family regardless of the outcome of their show.

  146. @Anonymous Jesus said before you judge others, first remove the log in your own eye. This means to work out one's own sin first, before talking to others about their sin. The Duggars did this 12 years ago. They dealt with a very difficult problem, and the counselors, DCS and the judge were all satisfied with the outcome and the way the Duggar parents dealt with it. That's the bottom line.
This isn't about the Duggars, its about hating what they stand for and wanting to get rid of them. EVERYONE has skeletons in their closets, and dirty little secrets from sometime in their lives. To deny this, is to LIE. The Duggars have had years to improve and learn from their mistakes and sins. They have never claimed to not be human or sin. But you people who won't let go, and continue to try to stone them, are the very ones who need to look at your own failures; your lack of reverence for God and repentance of your own sins.

  153. Honestly, I am grateful that all of this STUFF came out. It has forced me to face my own past and those that have hurt me. I've kept it inside for 30 years, always thinking that this "secret" was my fault. I don't believe in bad people, only bad choices and bad circumstances. Now I know that what happened to me was wrong, but not my fault. I can finally face the truth, forgive, and move on. But, just because I forgive, it would be stupid to forget, and fall into that hidden pain again. Bless you, Duggars, and may the Peace of the Lord be with you always.

    ReplyDelete
  161. You made a huge mistake in cancelling 19 kids and counting. When you have controversial shows on your channel, I can't believe we can't be given a choice as to what we watch. I pay for your channel and I rarely watch anything on it now. Shame on you. Do the right thing. Put this show back on the air. I think you have already seen the sign, as you have lost so much money.

  162. I don't watch TLC ANYMORE!!!! I hope they regret their decision!

  166. TLC deserves to loose money. If I were the Duggars I would not go back to TLC if they begged. They should be picked up by the UP channel. I love the Bringing up Bates show on UP. It is so much better than when they were on TLC. Josh was not a big secret I had read about this along time ago on the internet, The media just brought it out now because he was speaking up against gays and abortion. If he had not been doing this nothing would probably ever been said.
