Soul Surfer

Have you seen Soul Surfer? The Duggars have!

Last night, on "19 Kids and Counting" Duggars Under the Sea, the family had the privilege of meeting real-life soul surfer Bethany Hamilton. Despite losing her arm to a shark at age 13, the Hawaiian native kept the faith and went on to realize her dream of becoming a pro surfer.

"We have enjoyed reading [Bethany's] book and watching the movie Soul Surfer... It's incredible!" says Michelle.

Soul Surfer the movie can be purchased from Amazon on DVD or Blu-ray. Bethany's book (also called Soul Surfer) is available in Paperback, Hardcover, and Kindle.

  1. How do the duggars justify watching a movie where most of the time the main character and many others in the movie are in bikinis and shirtless????? does that not go directly against their beliefs?????

  2. It was very good. I was glad for them that they were able to meet Bethany.

  4. I am actually really surprised that the Duggars watched, much less liked Soul Surfer. The immodesty in that movie is ridiculous. I'm not saying the story isn't good/inspiring, I just think they went a bit overboard on the bikinis. The dvd we watched stopped playing in the middle and we weren't sad about it!

  5. Hi there! We always subscribe to their shows through iTunes and can download them the next day. But this time - iTunes is only letting us download the first episode, and not the Duggars Under the Sea. Any ideas why it's not available on iTunes?

We love your blog, by the way!

  8. Yes, I saw Soul Surfer as a birthday gift from my friend. I am a Christian but my closest friend is not a Christian and I wanted my friend to see this movie with me. I loved Soul Surfer so much that I bought the DVD. Bethany Hamilton is a great inspiration to me.

  9. Hi Corey!

Sometimes when there are two new episodes in one week, iTunes doesn't upload the second one right away, but it should be available soon.

    Thanks for reading!

  10. @Laura,

I totally agree! It is contradictory to the "modesty" they're teaching their children.

    God bless,
    Jo

  11. oh, and a lot of people look at the Duggars as role-models and will think that "because the Duggars watched it, it must be fine for us to".

  13. As others have commented, we could never let something like this into our home. Wat too much skin showing.

  14. I could hardly believe what I was hearing as I was watching the episode the other night. Michelle wouldn't even show her knees, but they are going to watch nudity on the BIG screen? Wow, I don't even know what to say. I was super disappointed in that. I hope that the same thing that has already happened to countless other reality shows doesn't happen to them. Being changed by the fact that they are stars now. It is about the only good thing on TV now.
On a side note, my daughter was the one who told me that Michelle Duggar said they watched Soul Surfer and I didn't believe her until she went back on our DVR,(because we were recording it) and played it again. I wonder if Michelle really watched it. I can't believe it.

  15. I too find it hard to believe that the Duggars would actually watch this movie. I would rather read Bethany's book anyways as it probably doesn't have Hollywood's spin on it

  16. It is a little surprising that the Duggars watched the film because of the modesty thing, and honestly, when I borrowed the movie from the library, I wasn't sure how it would be. The thing is, that type of attire is pretty normal in the "surfing culture". Also, the various bathing suits and such were not accentuated in any way, and I didn't find it too distracting.

It's possible that only the older Duggars saw the movie, while the rest of them read the book. But that's their choice, and it's no one's business as to why they decided to see the movie or not.

As far as the Duggar's being a role model when it comes to media, that still doesn't negate the need for every individual to take an active part in their own media discernment.

  19. Lily and Ellie i thought that the Duggar's don't watch anything that has immodestly dressed people in it? I know that this movie sends a good message but i am just shocked because there's lots of skin shown in this movie.

  20. Hi Anonymous!

The Duggars didn't say who all watched the movie. Michelle just said: "We have enjoyed reading [Bethany's] book and watching the movie Soul Surfer... It's incredible!"

    Thanks for reading!
