Can you guess what the Duggars' favorite Christmas recipe is? It's not the mashed potatoes or the turkey. And it's not even the delicious pies they make from scratch every year.
Any guesses? It's the rolls! And now you can make them for you Christmas dinner, too!
1/2 c. sugar
1 t. salt
2 pkg. yeast
2 c. flour
Homemade Rolls
Combine the following 5 ingredients in large bowl & cut with pastry cutter:
1/2 c. shortening1/2 c. sugar
1 t. salt
2 pkg. yeast
2 c. flour
Beat 2 eggs in 2 c. measuring cup. Fill cup to 2 cup mark with hot water. Pour over dry mixture.
Slowly add: 3 c. flour
Cover. Let Rise 20 minutes in warm oven. Pour onto floured surface.
Knead. Flatten with hands into large pizza shape. Cut with pizza cutter into16 slices. Roll up from wide end to point. Place in greased pans leaving space for rolls to double in size. (can shape like crescent or lay on side where swirl shows.) Cover. Let rise in warm oven at least 20 min. Remove from oven. Preheat oven to 375F. Bake 20-30 min. depending on how dark you prefer.
Immediately brush with 1 stick (1/2 c.) melted butter.
*Yields 16 Rolls in 2-9”x13” pans
Things to Keep in Mind:
*Knead the dough until it is smooth and elastic, not sticky. This should take about five to eight minutes, but the longer you knead, the fluffier the buns will be.
*To make this recipe healthier, Michelle Duggar suggests making one of the cups of flour whole wheat.
*Instead of shortening, we used butter. It all depends on your preference.

Go ahead and try this recipe out. We would love to hear your comments! None of the Duggars' Christmas guests leave their house without the recipe...that's how good it is!

What is your favorite Christmas dish?
Are the duggars allowed to dance?
ReplyDeleteIt's not that they aren't allowed to dance, but they have personal convictions against it. However, they don't judge those do enjoy dancing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the question!

Our family tried your recipe, it was great. Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteI tried this recipe, and it turned out wonderfully! The rolls were just right in flavor and texture. Great recipe Duggars!
ReplyDeleteHow long do I knead the dough for? Can't wait to try this!

Can they take some pictures of the process to make the buns?
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous!
ReplyDeleteA family friend is bringing buns for our Thanksgiving table, but if we make the Duggars' rolls again for Christmas, we will definitely take pictures of the process.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Lily and Ellie

ReplyDeleteTo make cinnamon buns/rolls I brush butter and sugar on it before I roll em up, Then make cream cheese frosting and paint it on while they are hot.Makes best cinnamon rolls ever.
ReplyDeleteHi all...thanks for the recipe...wondering if you are using solid Crisco-type for shortening or butter softened to room temp, or something else like oil? Thanks, Shae...
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteHi Shae,
Instead of shortening, we used butter. It all depends on your preference.
Sorry it took so long for us to respond. We posted a response two days ago, but for some reason it didn't go through. Thanks for being a loyal reader.

ReplyDeleteHow much cinnamon and sugar would you add to this?
thank you so much!
Kathy
I've made these twice and am making them again today. We love them. Thank you! I found them first in your book and copied it into one of my notebooks, but it's easier to have a computer on the counter in the kitchen than my notebook, so I looked online to find your recipe.
ReplyDeleteI use instant yeast in bulk. What kind east do you use? How does 2 pkg yeast measure out in teaspoons? Looking forward to trying this recipe. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI think I use 4 1/2 tsp. or so of bulk yeast. These come out fantastic every time! I started using this recipe after purchasing the Duggars 20 and Counting Book a couple years ago. It it now requested at special family gatherings. The rolls come out huge so sometimes I'll cut the pieces by half again if feeding a lot of children that do not need such large rolls (reduce baking time if you do this). As I roll them up I do stretch them sideways slightly to get a nicer look. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!
ReplyDeleteWhat is the recipe for the bread loaves that was on the may 13, 2014 show, with the honey in it?
ReplyDeleteQuestion?? Do we mix the yeast as per pkg. instruction before adding it to the 4 other ingredients? I have never made bread before and can't wait to make these!! Thanks :)
ReplyDelete@Sandy Norris
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy,
The yeast package should give instructions for how to use. If you buy active dry yeast, you can just add it directly from the package and don't have to proof it. That's what we do. :)
Happy baking!

Thanks so much :)
ReplyDeleteMy grandchildren and I love watching your show. I am teaching them to cook and we are using some of your favorite recipes. The ingredients part of the recipe says to use 2 cups flour, then as you add the flour to the mixture it says to add 3 cups of flour. Can you please clarify this for me? I have never posted to a blog before so I am not sure what to click for the correct profile. I don't think I use the options it presented, so I just clicked anonymous. I hope you will still answer my question. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteHi Sandra,
Sure, we would be happy to clarify. :)
The first step is to combine the first 5 ingredients (shortening, sugar, yeast, salt, and 2 cups flour). Then beat 2 eggs in a 2 cup measuring cup, and then fill the rest of the cup with hot water. Pour that over the dry mixture, and then slowly add 3 more cups of flour. You will end up using 5 cups of flour for the recipe.
Happy baking!

How warm should the oven be when letting the dough rise and what should I cover it with?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 28,
The oven temperature should be between 80-90 degrees while the dough is rising. Our oven has a "warm" setting that works well.
We cover the bowl of dough with a clean dish towel.

Do you guys have a recipe book?
ReplyDelete@Anonymous
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous 30,
The Duggars don't have a recipe book, but we have a few dozen of their recipes archived on our Recipes page (http://www.duggarfamilyblog.com/p/recipes.html). :)
