Jessa Seewald: "I'm sure it's going to be a keepsake to pass down to the generations."
Jennifer Duggar: "It'll sound awful."

Counting On is currently on break, but here's a YouTube video featuring the four youngest Duggar siblings, plus niece Mackynzie Duggar. In it, the girls are rehearsing songs for their Happy Heart CD.

  1. I love Jennifer😂😂 It was very obvious most of the girls didn’t want to sing, I don’t understand why their parents didn’t respect that.

    1. You can't go by one little 3 minute clip and say they didn't want to make the CD. It's like getting your children lessons, they are willing and excited most days, but sometimes they need to be reminded to discipline themselves to practice! We can't just let our children off the hook when they have days they don't FEEL like it. Life doesn't work that way.

    2. 8:24, You shouldn’t get your kids lessons in something they aren’t passionate about. If you watch the whole episode that the clip came from it was STILL obvious that this wasn’t something most of them enjoyed.

    3. 8:24- I agree, as long as the children involved had a say in if they would take lessons or not in the first place, whether it be music or athletics, or something else. Sometimes parents pressure their kids to get on board with something, not because the child is all that enthused, but because it's more a desire of the parent. I hope the young Duggar girls were able to decide for themselves whether or not to make the CD. This CD may be special to the family, but unless you are a die-hard Duggar fan, I don't see it selling too well.

    4. Forcing children to do something like that when it’s unnecessary in life is awful for the child. Good parenting doesn’t work that way.

    5. 8:24 AM - Where I am from, when it comes to sports and school activities such as plays and singing, including instruments. If you force your children to do those things when they don't want to, that can get you in trouble by CPS because the teachers has to report that. But if the child willing wanted to play sports or instrument, or be part of the play or singing but wants to back out, than it's okay.

    6. My mother coerced me into taking piano lessons and even performing for company at our house. I hated it, so much that I locked myself in my room one time when it was time to go for a lesson, and I wouldn't come out. That was the only way at age 8 that I could have some control over this situation. It's absurdly unfair when a parent does this to a helpless child who doesn't want to disobey a parent but also doesn't want to do what the parent wants them to do. I strongly resented it. My mother told me later that she wanted me to play the piano because SHE had always wanted to do it, but felt she wasn't capable. So why was I made to do it then?! Yes, I had musical ability, but no, I wanted to have control over what I did with that ability for myself. I did not want my mother to force me to perform for others, or to perform in her place.

So I really have to cringe when I see little girls asked to do something like this, with an eager parent (or in this case, two) right there, enjoying it vicariously. Just look how much Michelle and Deanna are into this, compared to the girls.

It's not right. Take it from someone who went through it.

    7. If the parent makes the child take music lessons and the child doesn't want to, CPS gets involved?? That's terrible! Does CPS not have enough truly abused children to help, so they need to micromanage parental decisions to earn their pay? That is so scary. Where do you live?

    8. And where are you from Anon 3:37? It sounds like you live in a police state, maybe north korea or china?

    9. Anon@8:24- There's a delicate balance. If a child is not generally motivated to pursue music lessons, or other activity, a parent should be sensitive enough not to place pressure on the child to continue. My own kids took piano lessons for about two years, because it was their idea. After that, they lost interest. I saw no reason to spend money and make them miserable by forcing them to practice. I hope the Duggar young daughters have a choice to participate or not.

    10. 3:37 -- Blink if you're in danger.

    11. Borderline bullying here. Don’t be so hard on 3:37 unless you understand her entire situation. People can be so mean. I find it totally out of place on a Duggar web site.

    12. @8:00 The poster was exaggerating. I know no country where parents would be charged if their children were forced to take music lessons. They would be charged, however, if it was shown that the children were subjected to harsh physical and emotional abuse by the parents. And obviously, you have a distorted view of North Korea and China. In those countries, parents would be applauded if they forced their children to take music lessons (if they had the money for them.)

Music lessons are excellent to help a child develop an ear for languages and ease with math. Here, that is very important since children are encourage to learn speak more than one language. All the schools here teach music. It is required for middle school.

Private music lessons do not have to be torture. It is up to the parents to pick a teacher who will encourage the child, will make music fun and will adjust the lessons to the child's intelligence, ability and interests. Some children are happy with learning to play Disney and popular songs. Others need more of a challenge.

    13. 9:57- The problem with N. Korea is that the population is subject to a brutal dictatorship. Children are taught to worship their leader. Only the elite have access to luxuries like music lessons. It is common for families to be destitute and go without food. You should read Hyeonseo Lee's book, "The Girl with Seven Names" which is a harrowing account of her and her family's escape from N. Korea. It is eye-opening.

    1. Michelle is being a mom like she always been. It's normal to have a buddy system in a large family. That's how it always was. The older ones help take care of the younger ones so that the mama can tend to the infants / cook and clean house. It's not that uncommon at all. It's no different than the women today who work and leave their children off to babysitters.

    2. I'm sure she is as all the older girls (except Jana) have married and left the home.

    3. I have no problem with older siblings helping out, but people who baby sit are doing it by their own choice and earning money.

    4. @3:41 Perhaps where you live but here daycare workers all have to early education training as well as first aide. They are not just changing diapers and "baby sitting".

  8. Arms crossed. Obviously she didn't want to do this. Probably embarrassed.

    1. Lots of reasons to cross your arms that don't mean 'don't want to do this' or 'embarassed'. Don't impose your single interpretation on someone else's situation that has numerous possibilities.

  9. Josie could be described as spunky, but the others don’t seem too thrilled with this venture.

  10. Josie seems pretty fidgety and jumpy for someone who's supposed to be interested in recording a CD. The rest seem calm and focused.

  11. I feel sorry for Jennifer. I wouldn't be surprised if she was told "you'll enjoy it if you let yourself". My mother's favorite line when forcing her reluctant family into doing stuff.

  12. I'd like to hear about Josie's singing debut. Is there a recording of it?

  13. I noticed that Johannah left very quickly when Michelle said they were done. Just personal opinion (could be wrong), but I get the impression she's not really into singing for a CD.

    1. I think she’s the oldest of this set and is at that age where she’s starting to identify as more of a big girl/young teen rather than be grouped with the littles. It reminds me of the old episodes and the seasons when Joy had one foot planted trying to spend more time with big girls and one foot planted back in “Tom boy land” with the brothers closer to her age. I remember an episode when she was clearly SO EXCITED that Anna gave her a real, grown up (but pink🙂) purse for her birthday. She was not really quite grown up to be ready for it, but so happy to receive it. Johanna seems at that tween stage, too.

    2. Hers is an age where she is developing her own interests and becoming more assertive about it.

  14. Maybe I never noticed how Josie’s name is pronounced or maybe it’s because i’m a Northerner - are they pronouncing it Joe-see? I would pronounce it Joe-zee

    1. I think Michelle has always pronounced it with an s, but I don't think they all do, do they?

    2. Different people and regions pronounce it in different ways. I tend to say Jo-see and am from the south.

    3. In the old episodes when Josie was a baby, I recall being surprised to hear Michelle pronounce her name Jo-zee.

  17. Johanna should not be 'grouped in' with these little girls. She is a young lady now and obviously looks embarrassed to be doing this silly little girl cd. Leave it to the kids to do. She's way too old to be included. Why does she HAVE to be included in a group? She is her own individual self.

    1. I agree, she is a lot older. they should let her decide if she wants to do it or not.

    2. I think the family does what most families do, cast members in certain "roles" and never change their perception of the people they've assigned roles. Johanna is no longer a "little girl" but she will probably have a hard time moving out of that role.
