Josiah and Lauren's Vows

Yesterday, we provided instructions for watching a preview of Lauren and Josiah's wedding. Today, we want to share the couple's wedding vows, which they wrote.

I, Lauren, take you, Josiah Matthew Duggar, to be my husband. Before God, our family, and friends gathered here today, I commit to be your helpmeet, your cheerleader, your lover, your best friend, and your closest confidant. If God chooses to bless us with children, I will join with you as a team to raise them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Within his help, I will be there for you in sickness and in health, in time of little or in time of much, and through sorrow and joy until death do us part. My heart's desire is that as a team we would display Christ and use our marriage to demonstrate the Gospel to the world. I am so grateful God has blessed me with you as my life partner. I look forward to spending the rest of my life with you, honey. I love you.

I, Josiah, take you, Lauren Milagro Swanson, to be my wife. Before God and these witnesses, I vow to be your lifelong friend, provider, protector, and be faithful unto you until death do us part. I promise to love and cherish you, even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. If God chooses to bless us with children, I will join with you as a team to raise them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. I promise to be by your side in sickness and health, in time of little, in time of much, through sorrow and joy. My prayer is that we will work better together than apart and everything we will do be to God's glory and honor. I love you, Lauren.

  1. I thought the vows were beautiful. A great combination of traditional and new. Good job.

  2. I’m from Colombia and I’ve never heard the name Milagro, only Milagros. It’s also an old person name lol

    1. Perhaps her just spelled the name the way it's pronounced. The vows were TMI in my opinion.

    2. 9:16, how were they TMI?

    3. 9:16 they spelled it like that because that’s what the way it’s spelled in Spanish lol I just meant that the usual form of the name is Milagros not Milagro

    4. I Googled Milagro, and it said that it means miracle or surprise. I wonder if she has a special meaning behind the name, or if they just liked the thought of it.

  4. I wish Jim Bob would share his questions for prospective suitors. I have a daughter, and I'd love to have those questions to consider.

    1. Jim Bobs 50 page questionnaire is extreme, just ask some basic questions.

    2. A 50 page questionnaire? No wonder Jana has never had a suitor.

    3. I thought it was 35 pages at first. It came in sections that you could fill out and return as needed. I've gotten jobs on less paperwork than that.

    4. 9:11, the Duggars have said that different people have expressed an interest in Jana, she just didn’t like them

    5. It’s ridiculous. God says we are to be equally yoked. Both Christians. There’s the long and short of the questionnaire. The rest should be two adults being allowed to pick their own spouse based on their personalities and life goals.

      Delete
    6. Why a questionaire? The girl should decide of the men is good for her. And the information should be private

    7. What happened to just meeting the person your child wants to marry and getting to know him/her well? All the "questions" would be answered then.

    8. 1:09 Yes, both have to be Christians but there is more to it than that. Do they have the same values and beliefs? Is church attendance important? Is the other person going to bring thousands of dollars in debt into the marriage? What are their views on children? Will they value their future husband or wife or consider themselves the boss? I don’t know that a very long questionnaire is needed, but there are a whole lot of things that should be discussed.

    9. Why would both "have" to be Christians? There are plenty of interfaith marriages that work out fine.

    10. 10:26, I agree, however anyone can answer the questionaire how they think Jim Bob wants to see the queastions answered. I think spending time with a potential mate over a period of time is the best way to truly know someone.

    11. Shouldn't the potential spouse be required to have a steady job before marriage? In my family and everyone else's family we know a man would have a job before he married a woman in our families. If he can't afford to take care of himself financially then he wouldn't be asking any of our Dads for our hand in marriage and getting a yes answer.

    12. Is there really a 50 page questionnaire? I have trouble believing that is true and not just something Jim Bob says to be funny.

      Delete
    13. Yes, there is a 50 page questionnaire. Derick, Ben, and Jeremy all talked about it and how they filled it out. They even showed Jim Bob going over it with one of the soon to be son-in-laws.

  5. wonderful vows!! seems God is first with these two and that is what it takes to make a long and successful marriage. i thank God for the Godly good man he blessed me with 34 yrs ago. these two can always look to Jim Bob and Michelle as a wonderful Godly example of what marriage should be - they are so blessed to have Josiah's parents for examples ( i am sure Lauren's parents are also wonderful people - i just know nothing about them). i pray God blesses this marriage.

    2. They probably honeymooned in Hawaii, if the hints Lauren gave were right.

    3. Maybe they went to Alaska. We'll see. In about 2 years, when the show finally catches up.

  9. Why do they always run down the aisle? I’ve never been to a wedding where the couple runs down the aisle. We just walk.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I'm not sure what the running is all about. I too have never attended a wedding where that happened.

      Delete
    2. I ran down the aisle when I married in 2001. My parents ran down the aisle in 1976. It’s an expression of excitement like “hurray! We’re married! Let’s start our life together!” - Julie D

    3. Jill and Derick started it. I've never liked it.

    4. 5:41 The tradition goes back much longer than that, and it doesn't signify what you think it does.

      Delete
    5. I understand the reasoning behind it, as 5:41 explained it. But I still don’t like it. It’s quite silly. To me, it comes across as, “We did this wedding ceremony that we felt obliged to do for our family and friends; now, we can hardly wait to get away from all of them.”

    6. @ 4:14 Yes - back to Roman times. Look up the famous Rubens painting of the scene.

    7. I agree it is inappropriate. You're in a church not a gym, treat the space with reverence.

  10. It's one thing to advise your daughter to be a "cheerleader" but it sems a bit much to put it in the wedding vows, IMO.

  11. Should read helpmate, not helpmeet.

    1. King James Bible it is helpmeet not helpmate.

    2. What is a helpmeet? That is the correct word they use. Just not sure what it means.

      Delete
    3. Helpmeet is correct, from the Bible, Genesis, or helpe meet.

  12. Beautiful vows. Congrats, Josiah and Lauren!

    1. In my opinion the vows were a little to much. I mean cheerleader and helpmeet? What is a helpmeet?

      Delete
  13. Technically...”helpmeet” was first seen in the 1611 bible (so...yes, the Renaissance) and it was actually a hyphenated noun-adjective that over time became a one word synonym for helpmate. I have no problem with whatever word people want to use and I actually thought the vows were beautiful. But for those that want to squabble over semantics...

    1. Thanks for your explanation however is it in 0ld King James cause I cannot find amy mention in the new King James.

    2. Anon 3:14 is correct. The Old King James was completed in 1611 (which was during the Renaissance).

  14. What is a helpmeet. Not being snarky just hear this term alot with the Duggars.

    1. It comes from the book of Genesis, in the Bible. After God created Adam, He said that it wasn't good for man to be alone, and that He would create a help meet (which means fit) for Adam. In the Bible it's two words, and it means a fit helper. People have changed it into one word, but that's not how it was originally written.

      Delete
    2. I don't like the term. It sounds as if the woman is supposed to be only the helper or less than the man.

      Delete
    3. 6:57, it depends on your perspective. If you're looking at it from someone lower helping someone higher (like a servant helping his master), then I see your point. But helping can be a sideways function (like if I help a friend) or a downward function (like if I help a child). Let's face it, we all need help!

  15. I really liked the vows! The team part made them very sweet and special.
