A Birthday and An Anniversary

Two days ago, Jim Bob Duggar celebrated his 52nd birthday, and Michelle Duggar shared 100 things she loves about her husband. These are just a few examples of what she wrote:

You help around the house.
You encourage me to draw closer to Jesus.
You are slow to anger.
You affirm me, and that means the world to me.
You are a thoughtful man.
You care about how I feel.
You show me respect.
You admit when you are wrong.
You have a learning spirit.
You read the Bible with your family.
You have encouraged our kids to be entrepreneurs.
You have bought & changed hundreds of diapers!
You have helped us learn from our mistakes or bad choices.
You still make my heart flutter when you greet me with a hug and kiss at the end of the day!

Tomorrow, Jim Bob and Michelle will celebrate 33 years of marriage! (Fun fact: their wedding anniversary falls exactly one month after Jill and Derick Dillard's.) Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo took to YouTube to share a combined birthday and anniversary message:

  1. There is no need for the family to make a private list like that public. That turns it into bragging, which is not humble or Christian.

    1. I can definitely understand why it's public. My personal family videos are public as well so that grandparents and other family/friends can view them. It's not bragging at all. I believe a lot of times with the Duggars people look for ways to criticize them instead of realizing if you examined yourself you would see even you do the same things.

    2. Well since Michelle wrote in on her own blog there shouldn't be a problem. Lots of wives post special things about their husbands and their children on their blogs. There is nothing wrong with it.

    3. Just STOP! How sad that you feel you need to come here and leave nasty comments. I was encouraged by her list - they are a public family and many if not most of us appreciate their messages.

    4. I don't see anything on this blog post that says they was bragging.

    5. I have to agree with you. Surely Michelle must realize that many of their female fans are not as blessed with such a husband, so reading the laundry list of how great Jim Bob treats her must be a painful reminder. I get tired of people talking about how blessed they are. It becomes prideful.

    6. I disagree, I'm glad people should let people know how much they are appreciated. Just my opinion. I love that they are so encouraging of each other.

    7. Don't you love someone so much that you just want to tell everyone how great they are? I think these 2 truly love each other that much. If they want to share the list who cares!

    8. None of your business. Some of us are interested. If you don't like it go troll some where else!

    9. What is wrong with the "few examples" from Michelle's list? None of them is private or something that she shouldn't share and I don't consider it bragging. Happy Birthday to Jim Bob and Happy Anniversary to Jim Bob and Michelle!

    10. How is it much different than people renewing their vows in front of a large crowd, and proclaiming what they love so much about their spouse ?

      Delete
    11. It's not bragging if you're praising someone else!

      Delete
    12. Tsk tsk tsk...trying to stir up trouble over a loving gesture to a woman's husband of 33 years?! Some people are just looking to twist something nice into something ugly. What a shame!

    13. In the minority here, but I agree with Anonymous July 20 11:47 PM- As many Women's Seminars and Ladies Groups that Michelle has spoken at, she has to know that not all of their fans have husbands like Jim Bob. My own husband is very considerate and looks to ways to show his love for me and our child daily. However, some of our friends and families don't have the greatest marriages. Out of consideration and love for them, neither of us trumpet how wonderful we think our spouse is or how great our marriage is. Rubbing salt in others' wounds isn't godly or loving our brother. Instead, we pray for them and their marriages, acknowledge their struggles, and encourage them in the Lord. Statistically, people who feel the need to regularly publicly brag about their spouse/marriage have the least happy/fulfilling/secure/successful marriages. It's a little like truly talented people have no need to constantly remind people that their truly talented. The need to proclaim it undermines the validity of it. It's one thing to validate your spouse privately, among family, and occasionally in a public setting. It's another thing to regularly proclaim it in the public square. The Bible says that the Proverbs 31 woman's husband was "respected at the city gate"- not that she was regularly praising him at the city gate.

    14. I'm sorry but if people are having difficult marriages, this is more to do with them and they need to fix it rather than blaming others like Michelle for making them feel bad about not being lucky.

In all the time I have been here on planet earth, I have noticed that those who have successful marriages put a lot of work and effort into it. They also choose their partners carefully and make heaps of sacrifices.

The reason why marriages don't last that long nowadays is that people are too proudful and arrogant and believe that the other person is wrong and they are right. A pastor said once that counselling couples can be so frustrating because they always blame each other and nothing gets resolved.

I do not see how Michelle is 'rubbing anyone's nose in it' as she does not know you personally and never will. It is a simple ode to her husband like the ode in the song of Solomon. I mean was Solomon and he shulmanite rubbing peoples noses in it.Come on.

Blaming others and being envious of them because they have a great marriage and you do not is not the answer to fixing it. Perhaps you can gather advice from them rather than making snide remarks.

    15. Anon 6:26. My husband and I are very close and very happy. We talk about it all the time. We don't say things to try to brag to other people about our marriage but to encourage them. Jim Bob and Michelle are showing people how they should treat their mates. Sometimes it takes just one person to turn things around in a marriage. Instead of complaining or nagging, a wife can encourage her husband and tell people how wonderful he is or at least something he has done that is good. Then when the husband sees how his wife is treating him, that can encourage him to treat her better. The Bible says to treat others how you want to be treated not how they treat you.

      Delete
    16. It is unfair, untrue, and uncharitable to blanket "blame" people for a poor marriage. Many people end up in a less than best marriage because it is human nature to put your best face forward to "win" people's approval/affection. None of us go up to a person and announce all our faults, flaws, areas we struggle with-let's be honest here. Many people (young and older) bring baggage to a marriage (personal insecurities, dysfunction from the family they grew up in, the way they were treated, the marriage their parents modeled or didn't, etc.). Most don't even realize until they're into the marriage that they even have baggage...some don't until well into the marriage. A large majority don't even know that what a healthy marriage looks like, how to Biblically love their spouse (wanting what's best for the other person first), or how to effectively communicate with their spouse (men & women have very different communication styles). Very few couples get actual marriage counseling beyond how many children do you want and how much debt do you have. Sometimes marital problems are about selfishness and pride, but most are not.

  3. They are adorable!!! I hope they are enjoying their new home, and taking their time before having children. If she had been like Jill, she would be due at the end of July, or early August. I wonder if she's relieved she's not, or if she's disappointed.

    1. Do you think she is using birth control? I mean I really hope so. I hope they have the freedom to do something different, maybe just be a couple for a few years which the rest of them don't seem to do. I'd love to see one of them do something different than the rest.

      Delete
    2. I love them I think they are a handsome couple.

      Delete
    3. @ 4:19am. Well that makes no sense. Since the onset of birth control domestic violence has exponentially increased; rape has sky-rocketed; and divorce is at an all-time high...even amongst Christians. It's hard to deny that birth control has a lot of influence on those statistics. Go and study it yourself. Find the PBS documentary that goes indeoth about how the pill was used in "experimental" doses (1,000x higher than current doses) on poor women in the Caribbean...many got severely sick and died. Take all that info and really ask yourself..."is the pill in any woman's best interest?" Certainly not.

      Delete
    4. @ 8:11 PM - The pill is not the only form of birth control that can be used. There are other safer methods that work. But, I do agree that the pill has contributed a lot to our society - negative and positive. Anyways, it's their private business whether or not they are using birth control.

      Delete
    5. 8:11- Your cause/effect claim against birth control is unfounded. Domestic violence and rape have been around since the beginning of time. It may seem like there's more of it, but it's because now women are less likely to keep it a secret and instead report it. In the past, it was a shameful thing that few would talk about. By the way, there are many other forms of effective birth control besides the pill. I did use contraceptive pills for quite a few years with no problems. I continue to be healthy in my 60's.

  6. Just curious- Surely there must someone in this large family who has aspirations of being something other than an entrepreneur. (Not that there's anything wrong with being self-employed!) I am curious if JimBob and Michelle would be supportive if any of them should follow a career path leading in a different direction. What if one of them wants to pursue a career that requires a college degree? Is this completely off the radar because of their religious beliefs and is it acceptable to work for someone else? What about the females- are they expected to forgo a job and living independently, and instead only devote their lives to marriage and family?

    1. John David went to school to become a police officer and also flight school. They encourage their children to go To God for guidance for what ever they choose to do.

    2. I may not be understanding what you're saying but many of the kids have went to college and done something with their lives including the girls. Jill and Jana both do midwifery (this requires a degree), John is a pilot (this requires certification) and fire department which have many many classes you take and degrees, Many of the kids have gotten their real estate licenses and went to real college. The parents have been supportive of their kids with whichever path they took and have shown it several times over so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

    3. Of course they would support their children in whatever career choices they made but if one choices to be self-employed or a stay at home mom shouldn't they be allowed to choice to do so same as everyone else is

    4. Being an entrepreneur is the most risky and the most admirable life long pursuit out there. I'm personally in skilled healthcare by trade and I can't wait to become my own boss and to eventually be more connected with my family than I ever could be. I seek being an entrepreneur more than anything. It takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice in the beginning but it reaps so many more benefits than any other "quo pro job" could ever concieve. It's sad that so many new bachelor degree and masters degree recipients feel like that they need to make six figures a year right out the gate. I was born in 1985 and I grew up poor as dirt. You don't have to agree with someone's personal beliefs. You don't have to agree with somebody's personal politics. We are all human. We are all victims of evil. We all have so much potential to do good in the world regardless of evil and regardless of circumstance. Be your own. I admire the Duggars so much for this. You, me , they....we may not all agree.....but we owe it to each other to be as good as we can be while we are here on earth.

      Delete
    5. One already has. Jill is a Certified Professional Midwife. She worked until she was 38 weeks pregnant. Unfortunately due to InTouch Magazine it is hard for the Duggars, especially the females, to get a non-entrepreneurial job. Many colleges and universities offer credited online courses, including Crown College. I believe some of the Duggars have taken courses that enable them to do their respective career choices better, just like nonChristian people do.

      Delete
    6. They are all doing their own thing. That's what they want to do and I'm sure their parents would be very support. Some of the Duggar women do have jobs and some of the Duggars did go to college as well. They also make their own courting rules.

      Delete
    7. And wouldn't a college business degree come in handy for an entrepreneur?

      Delete
    8. Does Midwifery require college degree? Or just certain course and training to be certified.... A nursing degree would be good to complete, to be a midwife....👍🏼

    9. Alberta where did u hear Jill worked as a midwife until 38 weeks pregnant? She does not work in El Salvador and she came back in may for Joys wedding when she was approx 33 weeks pregnant. They had a babymoon, numerous trips to silver dollar city, she also isn't currently on the register to practice legally in Arksnsas so I don't think she worked at all.

    10. Anon @ 6:04 Neither Jill or Jana has been to university. Jill was the only one who studied midwifery but she did so through a correspondence course, she is a cpm not cnm.

      Delete
    11. Anonymous 6.04 - The facts are that only Jill has a degree out of them all.Jana, chose
not to pursue midwifery & does not have a midwifery degree only Jill.
Firefighting is voluntary and does not require a degree.
John David has passed exams to be a police
officer and private pilot licence. He and Jill are the most qualified. But life is more than qualifications -
however, years ago Jim Bob made it clear
numerous times that his aspirations for his girls were to marry & have children so no
      active plan for them to
go onto further education hence, Jana, Jessa, Jinger & Joy have no college or
degrees. Yes tens of thousands of credited courses online nowadays but many don't hold any weight or teach more than the
      bare basics.
Joseph went to Crown Christian college for a year obtaining a diploma I think. And I think Josiah went for a short while too.
Out of 9 of them now as adults further edu.or public jobs in the community is low.

    12. Please stop saying Jill has a degree, she does not, she did not attend any university. I (and many others) spent three years at university studying and on placement in various areas to earn my nursing degree, and become a registered professional, Jill did not.

    13. Why are people so obsessed with them having college degrees? there is more to life than that.

What really counts is your morals and if you have a strong work ethic and you are loyal. Also you are not devoid of common sense and you are humble.

One can learn anything by going to libraries, and the internet without spending thousands on a piece of paper that sets you up as a wage slave.

Entrepreneurs do not need degrees . They need common sense and to be resilient. Most Entrepreneurs that we have in the UK and also those in the US that I have heard of who don't have degrees are highly successful.

In the UK, one must be highly selective over their degree choices as the cost of living has skyrocketed and you are paying of a mortgage sized debt once you have finished degree. Therefore your degree must be able to get you a high paid job to pay of your loan and afford your lifestyle.

I think it is good when entrepreneurship is encouraged more than education because what happens when your career becomes obsolete? All that I have learnt at Uni, I could have learnt in a book. I never applied any of it.

I'm glad the Duggars encourage their children to pursue things that worthy and that enable them to look after themselves. The girls have found spouses that enable them to be homemakers and the boys ate equipped with skills to look after their wives.

    14. One must have higher level critical thinking to gain "knowledge" from the internet and libraries. Not many people know how to exercise critical thinking until they have had some brick and mortar college experience.

The comments from Michelle's list being "not Christian" to "surely there must be someone in this large family who has aspirations of being something other than an entrepreneur"- what is going on on this blog lately? I truly believe we must have trolls who really hate the Duggars and come to their FAN blog to spread meanness and nastiness. As for me I LOVE Michelle's list!! Found it encouraging and it had wisdom. Love how he loves his wife.
It is so encouraging to see that their faith in God is not limited. It helps others to commit to God, showing living a lifestyle with our God is beautiful, not controlling or restricted. All the men in this family should be so wonderful to their wives and God. I pray Joseph is as good of man. And Jana finds a man like Jeremy.
