Choosing the perfect dress is a big part of wedding planning, and I (Ellie) was honored to attend Joy-Anna Duggar's dress fitting. (So many gorgeous gowns!) Stay tuned for more photos.

  1. Just wondering if you will address the issue of Jeremy throwing shade at Derick and Jill for being unprepared missionaries? Its all over the internet, but just like the news of Josh joining his sisters lawsuit it is conveniently being ignored.

    1. What does this comment have anything to do with this post the two are not related . Gosh I can't believe how negative some people can be

    4. This is Ellie's blog about the Duggars and so her choice what she chooses to blog about, just like other sites have their agendas regarding the Duggars. In addition, Jeremy never mentioned Jill or Derick by name, that is all rumours started by those looking to create negatives regarding this family. As well, Josh did not join his sisters lawsuit, he filed his own. And quite correctly, interviews with police that do not lead to charges/ convictions have no place in the public eye for anyone. People who were questioned for instance at the Atlanta Olympics many years ago, had their lives ruined by this type of mob mentality out to get someone. On point, it would be really neat to see you Ellie, in an episode of Counting On! Do you know if we will see the dress fitting? So much fun for you. Eileen

    5. I saw that. Bravo to Jeremy. He hit the nail on the head and quite frankly Derek and Jill need to hear that sermon.

    6. Perhaps he is right, my family had missionaries in extremely difficult areas of the world and they didn't jet home every few months because it was " hard ".

    10. Just because something is all over the internet doesn't make it true. This site is a place for positive news. If you want to hear negative news, then just look elsewhere. I doubt you will have to look far to find mostly negative and half of it or more made up news about the Duggars.

    11. It's not "all over the Internet," but it is there. Jeremy's sermons are taped & put on YouTube. You can watch it for yourself if you want. It was about being prepared to be a missionary, and Jeremy spoke about those who are not properly prepared or sponsored, and what happens when they go out in the world after their own calling like that. He even mentioned Nepal.

There's nothing wrong or negative about listening to one of Jeremy's sermons. He is responsible for the content, though, not us.

    12. 1:15 Jeremy's full sermon in question is posted on YouTube. The part where he starts talking about unprepared missionaries begins at 22min. Listen for yourself. In another sermon, he makes disparaging comments about Catholics. You are right about this not being "positive news".

    13. Yes, 3:02. I'm Catholic. I have watched this family grow since the very first episode. I have disliked all the negative Catholic bashing in the past, but chalked it up to youth and ignorance. Jeremy has gone way over the line calling us pagan and demonic. Yup. Anyone can read or listen to his words. I can tell you neither is true. It's completely hurtful. I LOVE my Savoir Jesus Christ. I LOVE the Holy Eucharist. I LOVE Mass and worshipping God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. I know my conversion and salvation through Christ Alone is real..as it is with millions of Catholics worldwide. I will in no way watch or purchase anything by the Voulo's, Duggar's, Seewalds, Dillard's or any extending families. This one cut to the core, and I will no longer "excuse" their words.

      Delete
    14. I'm not Catholic, but I totally agree with you, 6:01! Jeremy's remarks and even Ben's opinions (on his social media, for one place) about Catholics are appalling. These are the kinds of opinions this family has. I would have thought that as Christians, they would have at least been tolerant of other religions and would know better than to publicly disparage them. And this (being anti-Catholic) is only one intolerance among others. It's good that this topic was allowed to be posted, because it needed to be said for awhile.

    15. Catholicism is not Biblically based. The concept of the Mass simply is not there. The idea of Mary being co-redeemer is not there. These are man-made teachings.

      Delete
    16. Jeremy may be right about missionaries -- I don't know -- but, in any event, perhaps that was not the right sermon for HIM to be preaching if the result is discord between the two sisters.

    17. If you truly believe salvation is in Christ alone you need to read your Bible and see how the teachings of the Catholic Church do not support this belief. The Catholic Church teaches a salvation of works and believes in the need for a mediator between God and man - the pope/priests etc. The Catholic Church also believes in mediation through saints - again not Christ alone. They also believe that the Eucharist turns into the body of Christ - it does not the bread and wine are symbolic only. The use of 'holy water' etc is giving the attribute of Holiness to other than Hod alone.... I could go on and on... I pray that you will be led to read your Bible and an awareness of these errors and a knowledge of true faith in Christ Alone.... you cannot have faith in Christ alone and continue with the practices of the Catholic Church. X

    18. I can so relate to your comment. I too am Catholic and in love with my faith. I have followed this family for some time but I don't think I can any longer after seeing this. Pagan and demonic?? This is what they say we are? I plan to watch this for myself on YouTube but he has many sermons. Does anyone know which one in particular it is?

    19. 6:01, I think a lack of education is responsible when Christians condemn Catholics who are Christians as well. They really don't have an understanding of the religion at all and are going on long standing prejudices. This is a big problem when young people become pastors. They need more education and global awareness. I don't know why but the younger the person, the more vocal in a negative way they seem to be about other denominations. This is why a degree from seminary is so necessary before pastoring others. I do agree with his comments about being qualified in the mission field, however.

    20. @6:01. As a Christian I want to apologize for all the negative, and truly divisive anti-Catholic rhetoric this family puts forth. It's uncalled for and dare I say it unGodly. I read Jeremy's sermon too. What baffles me is if he really believes he is going to reach Catholics ( and I'm not implying they need reaching as I have known beautiful, faithful, Jesus loving Catholics) why would he use such horrible words? I can't imagine any Catholic would respond with " hey, thanks for calling our Church and faith pagan and demonic...so tell me about yours instead"! It doesn't make sense as it is human nature not to respond in a positive manner when someone has insulted your beliefs in a very negative way. Jeremy's words were harsh. Kindness and soft words I believe would be a much nicer salve, and way of building unity.

    21. I am also an ardent Catholic and am deeply hurt by Jeremy's "sermon". A "sermon" should be about God's word...as a Catholic, it's called a "homily", but it's almost always about the readings and the Gospels. Sermons should never disparage another group...especially Christians! I love my Catholic faith! I love Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament! I love our priests and all the beauty the Catholic Church has to offer. If Jeremy has a question about Catholicism, please ask. His remarks are uncharitable at best. I have a deep respect for my Protestant brothers and sisters...and a deep love as some are dear, beloved friends. And while we have our differences, we don't name call--and the word "pagan"--is just awful!! In using that word, it shows me that he doesn't understand Catholicism in the least. He thinks he does. And that is different. I would love to have him to dinner...to have an intelligent dialogue and to answer questions. I'd love to have him and Jinger sit with me at Holy Mass so that I can explain how each part is derived es from the Bible. The book "Rome Sweet Home" helps to clarify the confusion some protestants may have regarding Catholics.

    22. 11:32, Does Jeremy know other missionaries who are not well qualified, are not sponsored by a church, and went to Nepal, as he said in his sermon? Who else could he be referring to? He didn't mention them by name, but there was no need to. He gave enough other identifying information. And why would this topic have been on his mind in the first place???

      Delete
    23. 10:36, Thank you, but you have nothing to apologize for. It's the Duggars and the Dillards and the Seewalds and the Vuolos who need to do the apologizing. All have said some very anti-Catholic things over the years. Why they've felt the need to do that is the mystery.

      Delete
    24. Thank you 10:36 for your kind words. As a Catholic, I am dedicated to our Lord Jesus Christ and His word. It's sad to hear Jeremy and Ben's statements in particular, about Catholicism. It's also ignorant. I will pray that they are enlightened by the Holy Spirit as to the truth regarding Catholicism. Any book by Dr. Scott Hahn, a former Presbyterian minister, particularly his testimony, would clear the misconceptions up. God bless all of us, regardless of our denomination, as we try to serve the Lord in this troubled world.

    25. Wow! How did a post about wedding dress fittings turn into Catholics vs. Protestants? Oh how I hate when people go off topic and cause uproars.
There have been wrongs done from both Catholics and Protestants in early Christendom. The early Anabaptists suffered greatly for their faith and even some of them did wrong by becoming traitors to their faith.

    26. Thanks 10:36 am

    27. Anonymous @1:17 - very charitable and well stated. We can't fly off the handle every time we are falsely accused. Why should we demand more respect and charity than was given our LORD? "Come, let us reason together". The book Rome Sweet Home is a great book as well as Thomas Howard's (brother of missionary Elisabeth Elliot) Evangelical is Not Enough.

    28. I too am a devout Catholic who finds these words hurtful and untrue. I love God, the Holy Trinity, and I pray for enlightenment for those who believe as Jeremey does. No anger just sadness here.

      Delete
    29. I agree with what Jeremy said there because if you add tradition and other works needed for salvation in the faith as Catholics do, then it makes what Jesus did on the cross pointless. By dying on the cross, Jesus paid for every sin and if you say that you need to add works to what Jesus did, then that is like saying that Jesus's life, death, and resurrection meant nothing because I need to add to what He did. That is why I agree with Jeremy.

    30. Anon @10:44, please don't speak about things that you know nothing about. You obviously do not have a grasp of the Catholic Faith. It's not right to talk about and judge a faith which you are ignorant of.

    31. @4:07. Yes, atrocities have been done in the name of denominational superiority causing horrible division, hatred, and worse within Christianity. As there have been great moves to find peace and unity within denominations in the past few decades why would Ben, Jeremy, the Dillard's etc want to in any way re-start such anamosity? How do they in any way deem this as being a good "witness"? All this does is prove to the "world" what they all believe anyway; that religion causes more strife and war even among supposed brothers and sisters in Christ. None of it points to a saving relationship with a living God through Jesus. Nobody is going to win souls for God's Kingdom by tearing down one denomination by using ugly words ( pagan and demonic). I can't understand what they hope to gain with the exception of more publicity. Tragic.

    33. I agree that many have no grasp of Catholic teaching. I'm Catholic, went to Catholic school for 12 years & never heard anti any other religions! With Jeremy's Italian heritage, I wouldn't be surprised if a Catholic or two was lurking in the family!! Hope he & others tone down their rhetoric or TLC will be losing viewers.

  11. As a seamstress, I've been trying to figure out what is distracting on this dress, and I've decided it's the bodice and the sleeves. The bodice seems too short, not falling more at her natural waist. A few inches longer would have lengthened her torso and been more flattering. The neckline could come down an inch or two, too. It's shortening her neck at this position. And the sleeves seem too tight at the upper arm. Something is off with the armscye, the sleeve cap ease, or the width of the sleeve itself. I don't know how that tight fit didn't bother Joy when she moved her arms, or how she didn't pop a seam while hugging.

Look online at gowns with bodices and sleeves like this, and you'll see the difference. It would be interesting if you (Ellie) had been at any previous fittings to see if alterations were being done in the bodice or sleeves, such as being taken up or in. I think by the time you saw the dress, those changes would have already happened. This looks like a final fitting.

    Replies
    1. I also think the shape of the upper part of her dress (bodice) made her look short-waisted. She has a nice figure and her waist could have been featured, as it was in other dresses we've seen. The way this dress falls from that high break makes it look "little girly." Picture that waist dropped down about 4". Joy would look taller.

      Delete
    2. I think the fabric looks very thick at the neckline. It doesn't look delicate to me. Maybe the waistline would have been better with an embellished belt?

      Delete
    3. I think its a gorgeous dress and as long as Joy liked it, there's no need to critique

      Delete
    4. Thank you, Anonymous. As someone who also sews but with less experience than you, I thought her dress was beautiful but the fit seemed "off". I kept scrutinizing the dress but couldn't put my finger on the problem. I kept going back to both the waistline and the sleeves. The waistline was unnaturally high (which would have bothered me). I thought it looked uncomfortable at the top of the sleeve as well-now I know why. Being petite, I've had that issue with some brands of long-sleeve shirts when I've tried them on (very uncomfortable as it kind of cuts across the top of the arm when you raise your arm or reach). Thanks for explaining. I loved Joy's idea of combining the best of each dress though to get what she wanted. Of course, the average person doesn't usually have the money to purchase multiple dresses or pay the seamstress to do that.

      Delete
    5. This is definitely not her dress. Completely different dress.

      Delete
    6. Yes, I think you're right about why the dress doesn't look quite right.

      Delete
    7. I agree. It looks really crowded and short from the waist up. I think they were trying to make her look thinner, maybe. This dress isn't even in the same category as Jinger's. Really surprised Renee did both.

      Delete
    8. I also agree. It's not high enough to be an empire waist, and it's not low enough to be a true natural waist. It's something unusual in between that has no name.

      Delete
    9. If they wanted her to look thinner, they should have dropped the waist a bit and let it be narrow there. That skirt seam is cutting her in half at an odd place. Wonder if Renee is going to address why they chose that shape?

      Delete
    10. I don't know... but could Joy be short statured and they tried to make the gown flow lknger? And were they watching the budget since they were hondymooning in Switzerland? I remember Jessa was cutting costs on her reception, for her honeymoon expenses. Every one cut costs...in different areas of the wedding. Jessa had no wedding cake Joy had how many layers to her cake ( Maybe she cut cost on her gown?

    11. I love Joy and I wish her the best. I do worry that she will be starting a family awfully young. How old was Michelle when she started a family??! If she was any younger would she have handled it as well?? I wonder....

    12. I thought too that there was something not right with the dress but now that you have described this that is exactly the problem

    13. Her dress was lovely but didn't fit her torso or neck line. They may have had time concerns meeting the wedding date and only having one fitting.
I've seen this before with Bride's not living close by. It does help having several fittings to assure a flattering result.
Joy is a lovely young woman. Wishing them many blessings.

  14. I am truly happy for Joy. To be so inlove,,, know someone that long ....and then fall in love ....and then to be obedient tk ylur parents and to wait to be old enough to marry is heautiful. Her dress is beautiful but did look a little tight. And her hair would have looked elegant in an updo. Jinger had her hair done so elegantly and in Michelle wedding photo wasn't her hair done ?

  15. 10:45...first of all his name is Jeremy. He is completely mistaken about the Catholic CHRISTIAN faith and has a lot of nerve calling it a pagan religion. IT IS HE who should read official literature BY THE CATHOLIC church which outlines and explains the beliefs and practices of this faith, not read the misinformed information put out there by non Catholics. It is usually misinterpreted and dead wrong.

    1. There are ex-Catholics who post here and they know that some what the Catholic church teaches isn't right. Unfortunately it's hard for one to accept truth when you've been to believe something else.

There so much truth in reading the Bible instead of "official literature " by the Catholic church.
There is so much freedom in being in being part of a denomination that isn't run by a mere human who can make mistakes like everyone else.

      Delete
    2. That's a bummer to hear! This world is crazy enough. Christians need to stick together and be supportive. I am not Catholic but I am Christian and have good friends who are Catholic. To call it pagan is horrible

      Delete
    3. All the upset is history continuing to repeat itself. If all the denominations agreed with each other we would only have one. I do agree having an education in theology clears and defines difference and common ground but Jeremy doesn't have a master's or PhD.
I do agree with his interpretation of the missionaries and anyone from all religions have made failed errors of judgment over centuries. I don't believe he was singling out Jill and Derrick but the shoe seems to fit. This seems to be the focus more than the need of preparation and work efforts Jeremy was attempting to express.
