Record-Breaking Baby

Israel David Dillard, born Monday, April 6th, at 11:49pm, will go down in history. (Click here to see pictures and here to watch his birth announcement.) Israel weighed 9 lbs. 10 oz. (4.37 kilograms) and was 23 inches (58 cm) in length, making him the longest baby born at the hospital this year, reports PEOPLE.com. Last year, the hospital only delivered one baby as long as Israel.

After the birth, members of Jill's family rushed out to buy new clothing and diapers, as Jill and Derick Dillard quickly realized that Israel was already too big for the items they had purchased and received as gifts. Proud father Derick Dillard is sizing Israel up for a career in the NFL.

We encourage you all to take out a measuring tape so you can see just how long 23 inches is.

  1. My oldest son was 11 lbs 8 oz & 23" long.... born at home but not an easy deal! He was still a newborn but a big one & yes, remember he fit 0-3 month clothes right off... God bless this sweet family! I get so much encouragement from them!

  2. I, too, have had a baby that was 23" long! But he weighed 10# 11 oz! :)
Congratulations to Jill and Derick on their new precious gift from God!

  3. That was one big baby in little Jill! Cannot wait to see Israel's face in the above banner/photo of the Duggar's.
    Praise god!!

  4. I guess they will know for the future that newborn clothes will not fit their babies. Part of what made him be born so big was going almost 2 weeks overdue. He sure looks healthy and precious. Jill and Derick sure look like the proud parents of their baby boy, enjoy every minute with him.

  5. Congratulations on a healthy baby boy! I will tell you what is strange though.,,My 7th baby was over 10lbs and 22 inches long and she is almost 17years old now. She is by far the shortest of her sisters and has the smallest feet etc. :)

  7. Our family friends had a baby who was 10 lbs 7 oz!!

  8. 23 inches is really long! How long is the average baby?

  9. Wow Israel is one big baby boy & too cute. Loved the comment Derick made about the NFL or consider the NBA if he grows very tall. Derick is tall, Uncle Dan is tall, Jill isn't real short, around 5' 6". So Israel should be tall.

  10. Will you update the blog header?

  14. No fears. I am sure he will become average sized. My 4th was 2 weeks late, weighed 10 pounds and was 23 inches. He is now 21 years old 6 foot tall and about 150 pounds. By the time he was 2 he was average sized. Thanks be to God for a healthy baby and Momma.

  15. I knew that he would be big by looking at Jill but, wow, he sure was a long baby!! Congrats on the birth, I can't wait for 5-5-15 to see the special.

  16. If you had a c-section, Jill, I hope you are recovering well..That's a lot of baby for a slim girl!

I do wish I could go back in time and raise my children the way you have. I feel that your show will be so good for our future generations to watch.

  24. Here the babies are measured in CM. Size 56 is 1 month :) So none of the NB clothes will be fitting "little" Israel.

  25. My babies were 22 and 22 1/2 in. long. I'm expecting my third on Monday via c-section so we will see just how long he turns out to be.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That may be the longest baby at that hospital, but really, it's not that long. All seven of my children were 22 or 23 inches long at birth and between 4 lbs.10 oz. and 10 lbs.15oz. So happy he is healthy and so is mom :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. That is long! My oldest was 24.5 inches, the longest my midwife had delivered in her 12 years working. Only 8 lbs 7 oz though. He's been a bean pole ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  28. He is about 5 inches shorter and 7lbs lighter than my 6.5 month old! Granted my son was a preemie and only 5lbs 5Oz and 18.5 inches at birth. Now if I had gone full term, or even 2 weeks over like Jill, my son probably would have been about the same size as Isreal! Congratulations to the new parents!!

  29. 20 years ago, I had an 18-inch long baby (who was 3 days late!) who spent his entire childhood and adolescence as the smallest kid in his class, and is still only 5'2"--and he's a guy! Congratulations on your record-breaker in the other direction. He'll do great--look at his parents!

  30. Wow! he is one long baby!!

  31. Jill and Derick can save the clothes and gifts for the next baby or give them to Anna and Josh for baby #4. Israel gets a new wardrobe!

  39. My little guy was 3# and 16 inch long. He is now 4 yrs old. July 12th he will be 5. Like all children he is perfect. So glad your little guy is healthy.

  40. Israel Dillard is a good name no matter how you slice it. In the NFL, it's the kind of name befitting a legend. Let's see: full scholarship with the Razorbacks followed by turning pro and becoming his generation's version of J J Watt then Hall of Fame. Pray for the quarterbacks who will have to face him. Congratulations to you all.

  41. That's how big my daughter was!

    ReplyDelete
  42. He did a lot of growing in the 2 weeks he stayed inside.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Will you guys be sharing the story of the birth and what went wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sorry but yall don't know what a record baby is... I had a 9 lb baby, a 10 lb baby and 12 1\2 lb baby. The 12 lb baby was 23 inches long and the hospital had to go out and buy size 2 diapers! :) I'm assuming she had c section seeing Derick in scrubs. So happy for Jill and Derick! :) :) :)

  45. Israel David apparently is going to be tall like his Daddy! When babies are carried past their due date, all they are doing is basically adding more weight and body fat. This also diminishes the amount of amniotic fluid available. As his living quarters became more cramped, this baby boy was definitely ready to make his entrance into the world! It's my prayer that Jill and Derick will receive additional baby gifts that are the correct size for their bouncing baby boy!
My firstborn was "postmature", too. If she had weighed 2 more ounces, she'd have been a 9-pounder. When my grandmother visited the next day, she exclaimed, "Look how pretty and pink she is! She looks like a much older baby!" Israel David has that same, healthy pink look. I think it's much better for the babies to be postmature than premature. Congrats, love and prayers to Jill, Derick, and their adorable new arrival! Rest while you can at the hospital, Jill. Hope you'll have lots of help upon your arrival home--- a benefit of being in a large family!

  46. Hey From Abbotsford!!!
I just did the tape-measure challenge, let me say WOW WOW WOW what a BIG BABY Israel is, and I make a challenge to all the other watcher/blog reader to do the same!!!!!!!! Now I know why Jill had such a BIG BELLY!!!! With the challenge, write how you reacted, and then we can all see why she had him at the Hospital with an IV!!!!!

  47. I had large babies too. 9 lb 14 oz and 23" and another 10 lb 13 oz and 22½". We had a lot of things that did not fit out boys when they were born. Both boys have grown to be tall and muscular!

  48. WOW that's is a big baby! He is such a cutie!

  49. Bless you sweet Jill and Derick ... we love you and your family and the inspiration to young people to live honorable lives for the Lord. You have been blessed with "little" Israel David.

  50. Did they really have nothing big enough to fit a relatively average baby?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Congratulations. Happiness is being a parent. You both are going to be so amazing. He is so beautiful, strong and healthy like his beautiful name. God Bless You All.

  52. congratulations Jill and Derick,
Israel sure is a big baby, one of my sisters weighed 9 lbs. 9 oz.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i was also 23 inches long when i was born.

  54. Both of my daughters were 23" long at birth. I remember the nurses measuring, then remeasuring, then measuring again. One weighed 8 lb 2 oz and the other weighed 9 lb 2 oz. the 8-pounder's only 5'3" and the 9-pounder's only 5'6". The 9-pounder was born "starving hungry" and was a great nurser.

    Congrats to the Dillards!

    ReplyDelete
  55. OH! Poor Babe!! Israel probably just skipped over the 0-3 size! God's blessings on the new family!

    ReplyDelete
  56. How long was Derick when he was born and how long was Jill when she was born? Can't get over how beautiful Israel is just so precious.

    ReplyDelete
  57. When is Israel's picture going to be on the home screen with everyones - how are you going to fit it?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Our second child was 59cm long! Beating Israel by just a centimeter. lol
She was born at 38 weeks- weighed a whopping 11lb 4oz (5 kilograms) and 59cm long! No I didn't have her naturally.
Jill did well to carry such a big baby. It's not easy. Our daughter is now 6 and still very tall. She is a head taller than everyone in her school class of 5/6 year olds.

    ReplyDelete
  59. most of us figured he'd be a big boy since derick was such a big baby, but i got to admit, israel is much longer than i thought he'd be! you can really see it in the picture of him & derick.

    ReplyDelete
  60. She should not have waited for so long. The baby was too big te be born on a normal way. That's why they went to the hospital. A good doctor would have intervened earlier. She has probably had a C section (Derrick's clothing).

  61. well done to you both what a blessing ,I had a boy 10lb-8 ,he is now a strong man who is a gardener ,and very proud iam sure your boy will be the same.

  74. Can we pleeeaaase get back to looking at the Top of this blog, it says "The Duggar Family". I want to start reading about the rest of the family now (Minus Jill's family). I think Jill is the sweetest Duggar,it's just that I've heard enough now and have not heard anything about Jana, John David, Jinger and all the way down from there! Thank you ladies!

  78. I took a measuring tape out it was long for a new born baby.

    ReplyDelete
  79. For the past couple of months and especially with Jill going almost 2 weeks past her due date, I was concerned that her baby was going to be way too large for a safe home delivery. Having your baby at home is unpredictable and any additional factors, ie. large size can lead to a disaster. I am glad she was safely delivered and that everyone is doing well.

    ReplyDelete
  80. One of my babies was 21 1/2 inches at birth. At 16, he's 6' 3". Another was 22 1/2 inches. He's only 3, so we'll have to see how tall he gets! The nurses measured him 3 times when he was born to make sure it was accurate. Congratulations to Derick and Jill, and their BIG boy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I would also appreciate news on the rest of the family, if you have it. :)
