Duggars on Body Image

The Duggar women were blessed to have PEOPLE Magazine visit their home and photograph them for PEOPLE's 2015 Most Beautiful issue. They had their hair and makeup done and received brand new outfits. Michelle calls it "princess treatment" and says she enjoyed spending this special time with her five oldest daughters.

Michelle also addresses body image and discusses her struggle with bulimia."I think the hardest part of the battle is coming out into the light with it and really finding that person that you can be accountable with to help you walk through that," says the mom of 19.

Michelle works to keep the lines of communication open with her girls so they feel comfortable sharing their hearts with her.

  4. Michelle, thank you for your honesty about having an eating disorder early on. I have struggled with body image my entire life. I'm a mom of three boys and teach at a Christian school. I keep trying to remind myself that God created me in His image and that he made me just as I should be- but still continue to struggle. I appreciate your openness, knowing that I'm not the o my one who may have this struggle.

    1. No doubt they will have their turn at something like this. But did you always get everything your sibling got? You get what you need and that's not always equal, in fact it shouldn't be.

    2. they are little girls so they don't need to have this done to them let them enjoy their childhood. I'm sure that they know that they're not going to be included at times and everything their older sisters do.my sister was just 5 years younger than me and I resented it that she was able to do the same thing that I did. I had to wait a certain age to do certain things and sometimes she was there right with me doing the same thing that I had to wait five years longer to do. doing that making all the kids to the same thing at the same time can cause resentment.

  11. Stunning women! Just a suggestion for your next header photo. Perhaps the entire family in child order as you do, but a third and separate row for the Grandchildren. Feels strange for Josh's children to be before Jana.

  22. It is nice to be 'princessed' (made up word). The Duggar girls are attractive.
For the second part of my comment, I want to put it as nicely as possible. I would like to see more of other things that the Duggars may do. It was nice to see the episode of Jim Bob's ride along with John David. We know where Joseph is. What are the kids hobbies? I know Jinger is into photography. Maybe post some pictures of interesting pictures she has taken......sunsets, landscape, siblings, lights in the town at night, etc. Do any of the Duggars paint (as in pictures and portraits)? Do they play any sports? What is their favorite sport to watch and to play? Do they read any other books besides the Bible? What books do they recommend to read (Christian or other). I know they have recommended books like the one (I forget the title) that girls should read as teenagers. What is their favorite game to play? I know it is an exciting time in their lives but life is more than just weddings and babies. I'm trying to be as gentle and tactful as possible but I would like to see other stuff about the Duggars.

    1. I think Lily and Ellie just post what the duggars put on their facebook pages or instagrams... I don't think they call the duggars every time a reader has a question or visit the duggars and photograph whatever it is the readers want to see
I'm not sure but I think they just re- share what the duggars have already shared on social media or magazines

  24. They seem a bit too "celebrity" out thhere from their early days. A lot of focus on looks,make-up and looking glamour. Not sure why they need to be so focused on appearance if what's inside a person is most important. Unfortunately, I'm liking them less as they morph into tv celebs. Too bad, I thought they had higher standards for what's important in life.

  33. Jessa and Ben made a big big mistake attaching that lock to the bridge in Paris. The move to stop this defacing of Paris bridges has been going on for the past few years and there are signs posted to stop destroying the bridge panels. How could they be so disrespectful of the City of Paris. They should apologise to the citizens of Paris and get their lock removed. Very rude and inconsiderate western views of tourism. They need to have the whole family sign the petition at

  41. Love the show, it would be nice to see some of their actual lifestyle and activities. Is Michelle really that sweet, having 19 kids you have to get upset or agitated once in a while. How much individual attention can the kids have from mom and dad?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow -- Michelle and Joy Anna were the real transformations. They all look great!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Not sure why they care about body size when all they are gonna do is pop out dozens of kids. Just being honest, though i know this comment will be banned.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have a question. On the 19 Kids & Counting show why doesn't the Duggar parents mention they are true followers of Gothard? Why not be up front about their conviction? No one will fault them for this honesty but rather respect them even moreso.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The reason why Michelle looks so young after nineteen kids...that's easy, it's called clean living and taking care of herself.Happiness and low stress levels also makes a difference...So put that all together and it's a perfect recipe for beauty, outside and in.:-) Oh, I certainly can't forget to Lords part in all this :-)

  46. as a christian I would want to know why do the duggars want to be on the cover or even in people magazine. The are not a Godly magazine it seems they are milking this magazine and their imange for money?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Lily & Elle do both of you follow the principles & teachings of Rev Bill Gothard?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Every girl is a princess, whether they are all dressed up or not! One thing that really annoys me with the Duggar girls is the fact that they wear so much make-up.. (especially Jinger from the looks of it) Why cover up true beauty with made up beauty all over your face? God made you special and beautiful just the way you are! Let your true beauty shine!

I was never allowed to wear make-up as a child and I really think that that was the right thing to do. Because I never thought of make-up as 'fun' and 'pretty' instead I saw the fact that it was a cover-up and a disguise. I learnt to see the true beauty in people and to be aware of the dangers of trying to draw people to like you through beauty. I have often received compliments on how beautiful I am, and believe me I am not outstanding at all but an ordinary person, and my Mother also received and receives compliments on how beautiful I am over and over and wondering what the secret is; though they don't say it like that. Walking hand in hand with true beauty is modesty. With both natural beauty and modest attire, I try to bring God's light and grace into the world.

Please don't think I am saying that all make-up is bad or that all the people who wear make-up are bad or wrong, this is just what God has shown me true beauty to be, in my opinion and I wanted to let people know! :) God loves everyone, no-matter!

    God bless you all!

"You all are so beautiful and pretty just like your Mama as Jim Bob would say...and he's right...you all truly look beautiful whether you have the "princess treatment" or it's just another day. You ladies also have beautiful hearts which is more important and just shines through. Jim Bob and all the Duggar boys, Ben and Derrick are so blessed to know and have you beautiful lovely women in their lives.
Thank you for your show that we are able to see such beautiful inspirations on television.

  50. Have you watched the Bringing Up Bates show? As opposed to the Duggars, I really enjoy watching this show. Both Gil & Kelky are college educated & mature as opposed to Jim Bob & Michelle who married at ages 19 & 17 & still are immature. Kelky is such a loving & hands on Mom to everyone of her children. Once Michelle weans a baby she tosses the child into the girls room & the older Duggar girls become sister Mons. Also unlike the Duggars, the Bates do not try to convert their viewing audience to the Gothard cult. I like that concept with the Bates. Unlike Jim Bob, Gil isn't self absorbed, narcissistic nor does Kelly & he project a jollier then thou attitude. The Duggars project an attitude that they are better than the population of the USA not so with the Bates. When the Bates kids speak they do not appear rehearsed as the Duggar kids do. Everyone of the Bstes boys are good looking not so with the Duggar boys. The Bates son in laws are good looking & realistic. Not so much the case with Derick & Ben. Gil does not feel the need to control his son in laws whereas Jim Bob still controls the marriages of his daughters & son in laws. From now on, I choose to watch the Bates show & will no longer be subjected to the Duggars who are just nuts.

  51. Re the Bates family... It's wonderful & smart that when Gil & Kelly began their family they chose to give each child a unique name that didn't begin with the same Letter. I love that about the Bates. There are already too many names that begin with the Letter "J".

  57. Love the Duggars, the pictures are beautiful, as most pictures of them always are. Michelle, the hairstyle suits you, enhances your looks, and brings out a more gentle looking side of you. As others have said, I would love to see something a little more different in your everyday lives. I would like to see less of Jim Bob for one thing, and I would like to see the girls with their girlfriends, and some of their other interests in life.

  58. Michelle looks great, I wish she would leave her hair like this and not go back to her go-to look for the past few years. They are all very pretty girls! Jana needs to changer her hair a little too and stop doing the big curls and soften it up around her face.

  62. I really liked the little talk that Michelle gave, she is very intelligent and she does very well at capturing her insightful thoughts and clearly expressing them into the points she is making. One thing that struck me was that she said the hardest part is finding that person who one would have as an accountability partner to be transparent with in one's struggles whatever they may be. Certainly the thought of finding an accountability partner strikes fear in my heart, I wonder if I even could! The children in that family should appreciate what a friend they have in their parents!

    1. Looks great. Michelle should upgrade her look by doing the softer curls like her girls so. It makes her look younger and softer, not so harsh of features. Also I agree that the banner should have the grandkids separate, especially considering there will be six by the end of this year. The Grand babies should be in their birth order but it should have the duggar parent's name in brackets so it is easier to keep track or whose kid is whose.

  66. Anonymous 35:

I very much doubt that very many Parisians care about people "defacing" their bridge as you claim. Traditions like that attract tourists from around the world, who spend lots of money at local businesses and restaurants. I am definitely not a fan of graffiti or otherwise destroying private property, but this is different. Have you heard about "Gum Alley" in San Luis Obispo, CA? People come from all over the world to stick a piece of chewing gum on the wall of an alley in the otherwise clean-cut "college town" downtown area. Locals like me don't hate tourists, but rather encourage them to tell all their friends!

  69. It just continues to concern me that the Duggar's have taken up with a secular and very un-Christian magazine. People pays $100,000 for the cover. This shoot is about vanity, in my opinion. Tell me Jim Bob and Michelle, how does all this People coverage help your "ministry"...encourage your fans. I truly and respectfully would appreciate this conveyed. I am very confused.

  70. Michelle Duggar is the most beautiful Mother in all ways. She is THE mother I wish I had throughout my life. I'm 47 now and I'm a grandma now. But my own mother and I were never very close at all. I've always wished I had a mother to be close to and know would be my biggest supporter in life and who would be proud of me and want to spend time with me. The best I can do though is be that kind of mother to my son, the mother I did not have. God bless you Michelle for being a beautiful person in all ways, and for being a wonderful role model to the world.

  72. Wow - Jinger should wear her hair that way - and Joy looks very fresh, young and pretty. Michelle looks amazing for having so many babies - she truly kept her figure. Of course, each of them is beautiful - every woman is (some just need to let it show). But-I do believe they changed so much through the years - they look so modern - considering the outfits they used to wear.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @AnonymousI understand that they've come a long way since their beginning shows with the used or handmade matching outfits, etc. and now that they're older take more interest in their appearance but now they seem to be going to the opposite extreme. Now is photo shoots you see all the glam, makeup, hair, along with labels such as "Coach" purses & hats, etc. Now it seems that none of the girls would ever be caught in a photo without being completely done up??

  79. Let's face it. A great deal of the appeal of the Duggar Family is that they are all very good looking and photogenic - the girls and the guys as well. TLC would never have built this successful a reality show around them if they were chunky, unattractive and awkward. The same goes for People magazine, Good Morning America and the other publications that feature them and are willing to pay well. Good fortune favors good looking people .

  82. It appears as thought botox may have been involved in this makeover. It's getting harder and harder to relate to this family. From making their own laundry detergent, buying shoes at a thrift store and planting a garden to now glamorous celebrity magazine makeovers, newlyweds living in a mansion and trips around the world. This is all so worldly, I'm losing interest in them quickly.

  90. Agree with Frazer for Ben and Jessa. Concerning another comment saying if to be on tv all the time can impacted the children, we can't really tell because the marketing and advertising around the show is positive and not objective. Saying this is I wish all the best to each of them & hope they are happy as they showed on tv.

  91. First off Jana looked better in the before picture. She really knows how to make herself look pretty. Not that she didn't look pretty in the after pic (she is certainly beautiful no matter what) but honestly she looked more glammed up in the before pic.
Secondly, I really wonder what the girls thought of men doing their make up and hair? It seems like it would be alittle strange in their culture. Even though, I do think some men make better hair stylists than women.

  92. Joseph Duggar is a student enrolled at Crown College. With the loyalty to the Univ of Arkansas, why didn't Joseph go to that school? As a state school it would have been more cost effective to go to U of A vs the private Crown College. What are your thoughts?

@anonymous 47, Michelle and all the girls said they do not do this everyday and how it was a nice pampering to get made up and hair styled, in my opinion they look just as beautiful everyday BUT every women should be pampered like this once in a while!

  95. It is nice to see women being treated respectfully and to see their self esteem built up.

    ReplyDelete
  96. They're all so beautiful!! Michelle looks amazing...I like this hair style a lot better. I hope she keeps it like this! I can't help being a little disappointed that they would do stuff like this. Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just think to do this kind of thing just for the show and to bring attention to how beautiful you are, well, I think maybe they're doing it for the wrong reason. If you want to dress up and get your hair and makeup done and take pictures just for the fun of it, it's one thing. But when you're putting pictures of yourself all glammed up in magazines and all over the internet, I think you should check your motives for doing it.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I appreciate the Duggar family and their attempt to be "salt and light" in the world we live in. No family is perfect but they try to live by Biblical principles. Seems to me they have never told anyone this is the only way to live, just "this is the way we choose to live." I also went through a time of very low self-esteem with an eating disorder living. We tried to have better communication skills when we had kids, to value the people God made them to be. Life is a daily journey made better IMHO by a life lived in Christ. Blessings on the Duggar family for sharing their journey with us.

  98. Do they dye their hair? Why, If the Bible talks about the color of elders hair and respect for them?

    ReplyDelete
  99. They look much prettier in these photos than those other "makeover" ones. Kinda getting tired of nothing but glam and glitz from the Duggar girls now... Jill doesn't seem to be quite as into it as the others do, thankfully. :)

  100. "Favor is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised."
I know that the Duggar ladies are godly women, but it seems all they focus on anymore is the outward appearance and being "beautiful". There's a happy balance...

    ReplyDelete
  101. This shows that you don't need plastic surgery and that you can dress modestly to be beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  102. It's rude cause there is a sign saying not to. It's vandalism. Just cause everyone does it doesn't help. One part collapsed under the weight of the locks. The city is putting time and money and effort trying to replace them with a vandal proof panel. It's an eyesore to the peope who live there and their taxes pay for upkeep and they care about the safety of it. TLC is along and people who travel are responsible for breaking a law they knew nothing about. Also a law about feeding pigeons in Venice, but they got natural consequences.

  103. You are all so wonderful, the whole family. And ladies the make over's are great. Beautiful ladies, with or without make up.
    Love you all. Blessings always.

  104. The Duggar women and girls are beautiful and not just outwardly. When I first look at them I see happiness, joy, love for the Lord AND that's what's beautiful. It's what makes them outwardly beautiful, not just clothes ,makeup and hair.
However, when you have fans glorifying them to no end on their looks, hair and clothes well that's an open door for vain to creep in and allow itself to grow. It's not just the Duggars but myself included and in any situation. We have to be alert and take hold when we see what starts to control our lives. (Satan will use ANYTHING to distract us, even when it seems innocent). There is an enormous amount of talk here of their looks and that's not what's important! What's important is what they stand and live for! Let's let our Duggar conversations flow back to their said purposes in life........love of children (inviting other large families over for fellowship), serving others, (and traveling to different states to serve others), music, missions ministries etc. It's what I enjoy most! 105. I am very happy that we have some appropriate people!
I pray God will give them strength to follow the right path!
Just remember the hardest thing in life is being a Christian.
