Recap: "Jill's Secret"

Tonight on 19 Kids and Counting, "Jill's Secret"...
  • Jill and Derick are really enjoying married life. It's an adjustment for Jill, who is used to a significantly more chaotic life than she now lives. As expected, the new Mrs. Dillard often cooks more food than she and Derick can eat, so her freezer is full.
  • "We are settling in," says Jill. "It's really nice just to have a cozy home."
  • With Jessa engaged to Ben, it's time to start planning another Duggar wedding. Like Jill and Derick, Jessa and Ben plan to keep costs down.
  • Accompanied by chaperones, Jessa and Ben head over to Josh and Anna's old house, which is where they will be living after they tie the knot. They quickly realize that the master bedroom is infested with mold.
  • Both Jill and Jessa are renting homes from their parents. Why did Jill and Derick get a three-story mansion, while Jessa and Ben's home only has two bedrooms and one bathroom? Derick is a tax accountant at Walmart, and the house that he and Jill are renting is close to his office.
  • Jessa assures viewers that she doesn't mind having a smaller home. In fact, she is happy to have fewer rooms to clean.
  • When Jana and Jill had their wisdom teeth removed several years ago, Joy was their dedicated nurse. Now it's Joy's turn to have surgery, and the five youngest Duggars are eager to keep her supplied with ice packs and snacks while she recovers.
  • Jill goes shopping for dress-up clothes to prepare for a sleepover with her little sisters. Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn, and Josie are thrilled to spend time with Jill and Derick.
  • After putting on their dress-up clothes, Jill and Derick and the girls have a chocolate fondue party. Then, it's time to paint nails. "Derick is doing great," says Jill. "He is really good with kids."
  • Before putting the girls to bed, Derick reads a Bible passage. "I enjoy spending time with the little girls, just trying to get used to fatherhood," he says.
  • Back at the Duggars', Jessa gathers with her mom, grandma, and sisters to order coral bridesmaids dresses. She chooses a style is already modest and hopefully will not require alterations.
  • "If they don't like them, they are only going to be in them for a couple hours, so they'll live," says Jessa.
  • 30 days into their marriage, Jill and Derick head over for a surprise visit to Jill's family's house. They join in on Bible time, and then Jill makes a "confession."
  • "Yesterday I kind of took something, stole something," she says. She proceeds to tell her family how she took a pregnancy test from her mom's bathroom cabinet, and it was positive!
  • The Duggars are thrilled. The living room erupts with clapping, cheering, hugs, and kisses.
  • When Jill and Derick pick up the phone to call Josh and Anna, Anna answers the phone with, "Are you pregnant?" When Jill confirms that she is, Josh and Anna are overjoyed.

  1. I watched the episode tonight and I was kind of disappointed because I wanted it to be more about Jessa and Ben and less about Jill and Derrick. After the last season ended, we have been overwhelmed with all the stories of Jill's pregnancy progress so I guess I just expected that the start of this season would be more about Jessa and Ben! I want to see Jessa's wedding soon!!! Please!!!

  2. We know borrowing can be a problem but I can't understand how the Duggar kids living at home so long and on TV and obviously that is a job they should have been paid for, why they can't afford a simple three bed ranch with 1 bath in that state? I just can't get excited about the family letting them live in properties for free or low rent. Didnt this get Jacob into trouble in the bible? Josh and anna had way too much furniture and the furniture was oversized for that house.

    1. There's nothing wrong with the parents giving them a hand up if they can. This can help them save money for a bigger house in the future . They have been taught not to go into debt.

    2. They were already building this house before they got the show. I remember them on my local news when she was expecting Jackson.

  3. Thank you for sharing your family with the world. Thank you for being so steadfast and unapologetic about your faith. It's refreshing! I love watching in Tennessee!! ☺

  4. I love this show. I appreciate the Duggar's allowing us into their home. I am not sure why they get negative feedback as to how they choose their life. Luke 6:37
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.

  5. Dear Lily and Ellie, will you be posting the episodes?

  6. Maybe they don't want "a simple three bed ranch." Maybe they have what they want for now.

  9. so there was not anything about the big hole they are digging with the big machine, (where Michelle was feeling afraid)? That hole has me interested, is it a foundation of a building on their property? I remember JB saying that his children could build homes on the same land the family home is on. Could it be happening? Or is that the type of work that JB has Ben boy doing, construction>have they started a construction business? Wondering what it is all about. JB always comes up with some grand ideas.

  10. I don't know, it seemed boring. My suggestion to the Duggars is: Switch to UP. They do a better job wit the Bates family as TLC does with the Duggars. Tonight I was so annoyed about the repeatings of the same stuff, I didn't watch it to the the, I knew anyway what would happen...

  11. Nice to see the family back on TV. When will Jessa's wedding be shown? Can't wait to see it.

  12. I got a kick out of the look on Jim Bob's face first when Jill and Derick said they were pregnant. I could see the wheels of his brain going, how can they be pregnant enough to have a positive pregnancy test already. I am sure there was an edit in filming so it could be explained to him. There is still people confused about how far along she is.

  13. To Anonymous 1, I think next week episodes are more about Jessa . One episode will be title Jessa says Yes to the Dress. About the tonight episode I think it was half Jill and half Jessa. because Jessa starting her wedding planning and has order her braidmaids dresses online ain this episode..

  14. sorry but that story line seems so staged.

  15. When do we get to see Jessa and Ben's wedding!

  16. Show has gone downhill. Who asks a person with allergies to move into a house riddled with mould? That's a serious health issue and pretty hard to correct. How was not worth watching anymore.

  17. When is new season 19 kids and counting, on in the uk on tlc?

  18. @kms From what I can gather, they live at home until they get married. Honestly I am 28 years old w/ a husband and a child, but if I was single I just may still live at home with my parents to save the money.

The reason Jill and Derick live in that huge house is because the Duggars purchased it at an auction, cleaned it up and they are living there until it sells.

As you read, Jessa is fine living in a smaller house. If that's what she wants, so be it. We live in a home that is almost 1/2 the size of our last house and it's much easier to manage.

  21. Hi, I love your blog!
But, I have a quick question, does anyone know what the duggar girls natural hair types are? I understand they had perms and that they straighten and curl their hair, but I want to know what the natural style is.
    Thanks

  22. It's not on iTunes yet! Any idea when it will be available for purchase??

  23. I have heard Jim Bob say on numerous accounts, that Jessa is so beautiful. Beauty seems
to be prized in the Duggar family and that is so sad. I am a born again Christian and I am not
beautiful but I do love the Lord. Beauty has nothing to do with godliness, but I feel as if
that is biggest concern with the Duggars for their girls. That is the worlds standard not
a Christians standard. I have become so disappointed with the message they are sending.

  25. I imagine that they live in these houses as they are committed to living debt-free.

I cannot imagine that Derick makes a tonne of money at Walmart and that the utilities in that house are kinda HUGE. And I imagine that they pay the taxes as well.

I am sure that they will not need to buy baby clothing but diapers can run $80+/month ... and who knows if she can breastfeed as formula is $$$$$.
She has built in babysitters for when she goes back to work as a midwife which will save $ as well.

As for Jessa in the "little house" why not live in something that is already owned? Sure it needs some work but why not SAVE for the future by only paying taxes and utilities ... that is the foundation of being debt free.

  26. That aside .. I had a real problem trying to figure out if Michelle and Jim Bob were freaked out over Jill's confession of "taking/stealing/borrowing" ... did they think that there was something in that bathroom cabinet that was "bad" to take (like medicines???)
Or were they thinking "what the heck could be in there that she would need?"
Or were they thinking "what the heck is she talking about?"
...they grabbed hands so I wondered if they were shocked or dumbfounded or utterly confused that JIllybean was making this confession??

Just wondering ... have watched it 5 times and their reactions are priceless.

As was Jessa;s comment re "it's only a few hours if they dislike the dresses" ... if only other bridal parties would feel that way and NOT FIGHT over the dresses the brides want them to wear.
(henceforth why there is that "Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids" show and the battles the poor brides fight over with their horrible attendants) :-(

  27. Pretty boring episode, I think lately we know everything thats going to happen before the show is aired. Would like to have seen more about Jessa's wedding, and I'm betting that will be at the end of this season. TLC needs to catch up.

  28. That was such an amazing, sweet, and awesome episode! One of my favorites so far.

  29. Wow, what a joyous time that must have been when they heard that she was excepting! This is all so cute, and exciting!

  30. Thankyou Lily and Ellie for the recap! I don't have cable so I can't watch them until someone puts them on YouTube.

  31. I thought that Jessa didn't get engaged until August, and if that's true, then they wouldn't have been planning their wedding when Jill announced her pregnancy. In an interview, she said that she told them immediately because her sisters urged her to take a pregnancy test while at their house. So this all seems a little different than what was told before

    ReplyDelete
  32. One of my favorite part was seeing Jill and Derick adjusting sweetly to married life. I laughed that Jill talks so loud, that Deick has to remind her that there's only two of them. How adorable. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Is there any way to watch this season from the UK? We usually have to wait at least a year to watch it on TLC here which is mildly frustrating!!! Would be grateful for any advice!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do you know when Amazon is supposed to carry the episodes to buy?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The last season of this show was entirely devoted to Jill. Jessa's sure isn't getting the same coverage or the same luxury home. She gets a home with mold. The "kiss count" was rather pathetic. It's as though no one else has ever kissed or been pregnant the way these things are dealt with on this show.

  36. Hi, I am from Australia and have not been able to find the new season on cable or the internet. I was wondering if anyone knows when it will be released here or available online?

  37. Hi Readers,

The episodes are each available for purchase on Amazon US and iTunes within a few days of the premiere date. Some are posted to YouTube.

    Blessings,

  38. The same thing has happened with this show that is happening with the show (you know) about ducks. These families started out with relatively nothing, targeting an audience with relatively nothing, and it is getting harder for both shows to keep their target audience. Fame and fortune has its upsides and downsides.

    ReplyDelete
  39. More staging of pregnancy announcement too :( Jill said her sisters were with her when she took the test. If you are going to re enact storyline a make them the truth!

  40. How can I watch it online? I'm a big fan from Brazil but I can't find the episodes available

  41. This episode is on YouTube just to let everyone known.

  42. Janet Pole, Derick is an accountant at WalMart, I am sure he does reasonably well. I also hope they get some money for being on the show, we all know JB and M get paid. I don't believe that paying rent and utilities on that house is out of their means, though of course they would save in a smaller house.

  43. Guys if yall are only gonna criticize the Duggars, please do it somewhere else. I'm tired of reading negative comments. I think the Duggars are great and a wonderful influence.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I can bet that Jill will be expecting again by the end of the year, and they will stay forever in that huge mansion. She will never go back to her midwifery dreams. She will be busy with the baby first, then another baby, and another...

    ReplyDelete
  45. I sympathize with the comment about JB focusing on Jessa's physical looks. I have found it discouraging in my life too. So many people, including pastors and others who should know what the Bible says is important, but even so, there is always much emphasis placed on a women's physical looks. I think if I was younger and realized the circumstances clearly I would have gone the route of developing my career and character, because ultimately a man will want a good partner. I did not have this strategy, but I think the Bible does give it to women to follow.

  46. @Anonymous Where is the episode on YouTube and who was it published by? I love the Duggars but live in the UK so can't watch them

    ReplyDelete
  47. @AnonymousCould anybody give me a link to youtube or any other source to watch it online?

    ReplyDelete
  48. I agree if all you are going to do is criticize then do it
else where, or better yet just enjoy the show and keep your terrible thoughts to yourselfs, if you can't
say something nice don't say it at all, no one wants to hear the rotten stuff, these people have opened up there homes to all of us, and they're Christians
they all love the Lord very much and treat each other with respect who knows some parts were probably maybe cut so they didn't have to hear the criticism.

  49. That was such a staged episode, one of the worst. This show has gone down hill fast. Much different than the early shows.

  50. I appreciate TLC's efforts at eliminating all the flash-back type scenes so typical of the previous season. I found this episode's pacing and story lines interesting and fun to watch. Even commercials were kept to a minimum and additionally, TLC's promos for other series were well done and short. One or two scenes did appear heavily scripted, but nothing as corny as last season. I was one who complained last year and was not going to watch this season, but I am glad
I gave it one more try. I hope the rest of the season's shows are as well done.

  52. Very staged episode...especially when Jill announced her pregnancy. Her sisters already knew! It was hard to watch because it was so staged . I really like this family and their values... I just wish the show was more natural like it used to be. Even the filming seems so much more glamorized.

  55. If you are looking for a You Tube link it may not be there at this time on You Tube, after 'awhile' you might find it - there some day. Don't go to those "link" offerings that come up on You Tube videos because the promised videos are not found at the end of all the hoops and payments. Do the iTunes, Amazon and Google Play thing Lily and Ellie confirm is the way to see the videos.
