  2. Yes, we do sales, off brands, thrift stores, and such.

Some other things we do to save money: Make food from scratch, challenge ourselves to shop under a certain amount every few weeks, negotiate with our utilities (mostly phone and internet), drive as little as possible, shop for used stuff through Craigslist, and much more....

  3. What I really want to know is why the Duggar's claim to support the U.S. military, yet none of the Duggar's have served in the U.S. military or aspire to? I also want to know why the Duggar's speak that they are so pro-adoption, yet no Duggar has adopted a child? It is so easy to mouth words. It is so much harder to practice what you preach.

  6. Most people know those tips Anna was offering. What I'm interested in knowing is how do they afford to live in a large DC area home with 3 kids, an Rv, 2 cars, AND travel all the time??? I don't know how to work that budget!!!

  9. The teaching example of the Duggars on managing the basics of life are actually very important and a fellowship and encouragement to people. People can be enlightened and strengthened, and feel a part of a larger body of people and their God by participating through viewership in the practise of principles in Christian living. Like myself people can see that the Duggars budget, don't drink, listen more than they talk, work co-operatively, work hard, are progressive, are chaste, practise healthy living in eating and exercising, think positively, read the Bible, worship ....what other virtues do people see in their lives? If viewers are having problems simply watching the shows can be a source of guidance. Thanks Duggars.

  10. The previous comment 'most people know those tips..' makes me chuckle because there is a gap between knowing and doing ANYTHING that people know to do that is 'right'. A good example helps!

  11. Since there isn't an influenza epidemic leaving one out of ten children parentless a large family shouldn't be adopting. You can be pro life and not adopt. For all we know there is adoption in their family history. But that wouldn't be their story to tell. They have mentioned friends who have adopted. Food and clothes are not the big budget busters. It's housing and transit and medical. I too wonder why none of the children has considered the military.

  12. Simple tips for saving money are great, we shop fresh at the farmers market year round. Obviously not all produce can be purchased fresh from a farm but the prices are drastically less then what I would pay in the grocery. My vendor sells to restaurants year round so I get the best quality and variety during the long winters here.
We use this as a social time to visit others and vendors at the market and often takes about 30 minutes to accomplish.
I order my eggs in bulk in advance of arrival to the market so it is easy to get in and out quickly. I often save $1.50 a dozen compared to the store and they last 6 weeks instead of 4 or less or buy the jumbo for same price as large in the grocery.
Buying meats or poultry from a farm or butcher provide additional savings and assure the value you are purchasing. We also have that available at the farmers market. So I buy grass fed and no GMO issues if grain is given last week before slaughter.
Basic items like paper products and such are bought in big box stores or grocery on sale.

I raised 7 children and am down to 2 within the household. Simple approaches like I have offered reduced my monthly grocery budget from $1,200 to $690.

Consignment clothing stores that trade back your out grown clothing for kids is a must with a large family.
Shoes are bought on clearance off season at rock bottom prices to plan ahead new in my family.

With the partnership of TLC the Duggars are probably fortunate to be able to have additional household income for costs. I am sure vehicles are provided with discount or in hopes of promotion with them using them on the show. I am also certain people have helped them like they attempt to help others.

No matter what our circumstances have been, we always attempt to give back to the community.
And btw two of my kids are "spares" as we opened our home to them because they needed a loving one. No formal adoption was involved. I am very proud of all of them and what they have accomplished in their lives.

  13. @Anonymous You can afford all of that too! The key is not buying anything unless you can pay for it in cash. If you live within the means you have, you won't have debt. Josh and Anna did not have a car payment or house note while living in Arkansas, but Josh worked full time. They didn't need to spend money at all really, as the Duggars were just around the corner. But both were raised in frugal homes and know what is and is not needed to be happy. They likely have smart investments and could draw on savings to make the move to DC. Now, Josh is likely making a much bigger salary and that equals more money available.

  14. If you cut cost in certain areas you can afford to have more and to splurge on other things. Simple. That is how they can afford to have 2 cars etc. plus you don`t know what their income is just because they buy used does not mean they are struggling it just means they are being cost effective. I wanted a bigger home so i cut costs buy not buying brands etc so i can afford my nice house. Its not for us to judge.

  16. Trips are paid for by TLC. Also, the show is income-generating, so I don't think they are struggling :)

  17. I wonder what will happen now that Jill has moved into the house till it's sold, if while still pregnant and newly married, if the house were to sell, where would they go? How could they manage a new home without going into debt? Would daddy come to the rescue? And will it be fair, and expected for all of his daughters as well?

Well most Americans support the troops and the military but we dont all fight. Also with adoption, just because you agree with it doesn't it will happen. Adopting in itself is a long and hard process and the Duggars always mention that they pray on it; to see if adopting is what God wants in their life at the moment.

  19. One thing that has really stuck in my mind is "Buys used, save the difference." It has certainly helped and I am grateful this has been etched in my mind when I am out and about.

  20. I'm sure their making money off TLC. And I would say all their vehicles are used, most likely bought at Auction since Josh was in used car dealer business. Their rent must be high for that big house too.

  21. What about buying used furniture, clothing with the bed bugs on the rise?
