Recap: Season Finale

19 Kids and Counting "Flea Market Finale"...
  • Jim Bob and Michelle gather the kids in the living room to announce their goal for the Duggar Family Flea Market: $10,000. Some of the kids are a little skeptical.  "A lot of the stuff I saw didn't look like it had a lot of value," says Jinger.
  • "It's going to be all hands on deck the next few days to make this happen," says Jim Bob.
  • 5 Days to Go... To get the word out, the family announces their flea market on a local radio station that both Jim Bob and Michelle listened to growing up.
  • 4 Days to Go... The Duggars hold a donation drop-off. "Pretty much every car that pulled up to donate to the cause had someone in their family who had been touched by Arkansas Children's Hospital," says Michelle, who enjoys chatting with new friends.
  • 3 Days to Go... Michelle and the little girls paint signs, while Grandma and the older girls make 600 cookies to sell. "I was trying to teach the girls to measure everything, but they were determined just to throw it together," says Grandma Duggar. Outside, Jim Bob and the boys organize the big items under the tents.
  • 2 Days to Go.. The girls head out to the tents to organize the smaller items, while the guys work in the warehouse. Michelle gets a little sentimental when she comes across a pair of Josie's old shoes. "It definitely makes me miss having a baby in my house," says the mother of 19.
  • Jessa  convinces her mom that it's time to part with them. "I'm not completely heartless," says the fifth oldest Duggar. "I just don't like when people are being a pack-rat."
  • 22 Hours to Go... While sorting through racks of clothes, Jinger comes across a few of her favorite shirts and quickly claims them before someone else does.
  • 1 Hour to Go... Just before the gates are opened, Josh and Anna make a surprise visit...all the way from Washington D.C. "We snuck up on them because we wanted to surprise them," says 4-year-old Mackynzie, who is thrilled to see her relatives.
  • After exchanging hugs with the entire family, the eldest Duggar and his wife put on their "Buy Used Save the Difference" T-Shirts and get to work.
  • In addition to a traditional flea market, the event also features a live auction, a bake sale, concessions, and a  carnival. One of the a carnival activities is a dunk tank appropriately named" Dunk A Duggar."
  • During the auction, auctioneer Johannah Duggar liquidates the girls' supply of ping pong guns for a total of $80, but the boys end up raising $122 from the sale of their knives.
  • After 6 hours, Michelle adds up the total raised, and Josie holds up a giant check to reveal the final amount...$18,471.50! The Duggars and all their helpers  almost doubled their initial goal. The money will be donated to NICU families at Arkansas Children's Hospital.
  • At the end of the show, Jim Bob and Michelle make a big announcement...Jessa Duggar is courting! (Click here for details.) She and her special someone are getting to know each other via group text, which is monitored by Mom and Dad. "When a guy's interested in one of our daughters, our whole family checks him out," says Jim Bob.

    1. They do. I don't know the details, but JimBob and some of the children were baptised in the Jordan River during their trip to Israe. This was televised, and JimBob mentioned that everyone, with the exception of Amy, had been baptised before. I think this may be on YouTube, but it is definitely on Netflix, where I saw it.

  2. very happy for Jessa! it seems like Jessa and her beau are a bit more relaxed --not always clutching hands like Josh (he went first so it seems he had to figure a lot of things out as things progressed). I thought the gentle side by side hug was sweet and tender and very heart felt and modest.

  3. I think when someone is dateing it should oy be between the 2 that are dateing because there the ones who decide to marry each other and live with each other I would never but in on my childs relationship I believe to let them decide for them selves not have me make there descion for them I did that when they were little when they are 18 it is there decision to make on there own

  4. Six weeks makes a season? I'm not too impressed with TLC's math. The seasons seem to keep getting shorter. :(

  5. Ah darn, I was hoping the announcement was going to be something we didn't already know! Congrats to Jess and Ben! And Congrats to the Duggars for such an awesome fundraiser!

  6. Excuse me but what happened to respecting your elders? Jessas behavior while baking with Grandma Duggar was completly disrespectful. My goodness if I treated my grandma that way I'd get smack to the head and never hear the end of it. Completly ingoring her thoughts on the matter would have gotten the measuring cup swiped out of my hand and sent out of the kitchen. Poor Grandma Duggar,I expected much much more from Jessa.

    1. Sorry I totally disagree. Grandma was treating Jessa like a child who had never cooked or baked before and we all know this isn't the case. I thought grandma was the one being disrespectful and if someone treated me that way I would not have handled it as well as Jessa. It was chocolate chip cookies for goodness sake. Who hasn't baked those hundreds of times? If you spend as much time in the kitchen as the people in this family do I doubt you'd have to measure everything exactly either. If Grandma wants respect from a full grown adult then she should be respectful too.

  7. Enjoyed the season finale! Look forward to seeing new shows in the not too distant future- especially Jessa's courtship! congrats to the Duggars for their VERY successful fundraiser for children's hospital! Never had a doubt they'd succeed. :)

  8. Although the flea market was for a good cause and very successful, I was deeply disappointed that there was no mention of prayer and then glory to God for the results. As they were pressured and could not do it by themselves, I would expect them to have prayer for the Lord's help and provision as they have done in the past. Also, when Michelle spoke of the hospital's personnel bringing Josie through the difficult time with no mention of God's Hand on her, I was ready to weep. What a missed opportunity! Is TLC prohibiting them from speaking as Christians now and are they all right about it? I hope to see Michelle at Erin Bates' wedding next Saturday and ask her.

I must agree. God and prayer ultimantly saved Josie as it did with my premie twins 18 years ago. We had prayer chains at many churches in our city. There was a study regarding premies a prayer and the study supported the prayer/premie correlation.
Ultimately it is up to God. I think that deep down the Duggars believe that God "blesses" them witb children because he favors them in some way. Tom Cruise is a scientolgist and he and many other non Christians live very charmed lives while the faithful seem to suffer true hardships and heartbreak. God does as he pleases and we must cope.

  9. It's expensive and time-consuming to travel from DC to Arkansas. Who pays the way for Josh's family to do this and how DOES he get the time off work for it? Shouldn't he be focusing on establishing his own independent household and not running back to Arkansas all the time? I'd bet he spends more time with the Duggar clan than he does with the Keller clan in Florida!

  10. I have to agree with the person who commented on Jessa's dismissive attitude toward her grandmother. Clearly, Jessa is a confident and competent young woman and just a darling, but I have to confess, I was surprised and disappointed by her response to her grandmother. When I think of Mrs. Duggar's service to her family and her gentle, patient demeanor toward her family, it makes me sad that Jessa could not have found a more tender way to assert her confidence in her ability to put together the cookie dough.
