Official Chicken n a Biscuit Recipe

The moment you have all been waiting for! Ashton, a friend of Jill, typed out the chicken n a biscuit recipe that she prepared for the Duggars and Vanderhoffs on 19 Kids and Counting, "Thrill Seeking Duggars."

Chicken n a Biscuit
2 cups of shredded mild cheddar
2 (8oz) cans of all natural canned chicken
1 (26oz) can of cream of chicken soup
1% milk (about 1-2 cups)
3 cans of crescent rolls

In large mixing bowl combine cream of chicken soup with milk, until it is gravy consistency (set aside)

In a different bowl combine cheese and shredded chicken. (Break up chicken with fork or fingers until finely shredded)

Lightly spray pan with nonstick spray

Pour small amount of gravy in bottom of 9X13 baking dish. (Just enough gravy for biscuits not to stick to bottom)

Spray counter-top with no-stick spray and thoroughly wash hands

Now one by one separate crescent rolls and flatten with fingers until thin but with no holes

Fill crescent with chicken and cheese mixture (palm full of mix) and wrap tightly in crescent roll

Continue until pan is full or you are out of chicken and cheese mixture

Finally pour remained gravy over top and bake for 40-45 mins at 350 degrees

Crescent rolls will bubble and some will brown on top if not thoroughly covered with gravy

Let cool and enjoy!

This recipe yields about 24ish biscuits depending on how big you make them, but for my family it feeds 8-10 people if served with veggies. Enjoy!

  18. Looks really interesting although I have never heard of chicken in a can before or the wraps that the chicken goes into. Do they have any other name? And I assume, since we can't get chicken in a can here, that shredded chicken off the bone would do the trick too? thanks so much

  23. Thanks for posting the recipe! I didn't know they made canned chicken. I've never seen it at my grocery store before. Would it work the same with chicken breasts I shredded up? And if so, would I be required to pre cook the chicken or make the dumplings with the chicken raw and then cook? I'm not sure how the canned chicken comes.
    thanks!

    Hi Stacey,

Shredded chicken breast will work just fine, but be sure to precook it.

    Hi Anonymous,

Shredded chicken off the bone will do the trick, as long as you cook it beforehand. As for the crescent rolls, those are just cans of pre-made dough.

    Happy Cooking!

  27. I tried this recipe and it was a huge hit at my families dinner last night. Ironically I was not amazed with it. I did not really like the doughy texture of the crescent rolls. If I had to make it over I would cook the rolls and chicken first until the crescents were baked and then pour gravy over the top and bake it the rest of the time. I like my rolls more cooked.

  28. I made this tonight and as I was preparing the chicken cheese mix I noticed things were not "gelling" together. So I added some of the soup mix to it. I also made the soup mix this way: 1 can cream of chicken soup, 1/2 cup lite sour cream, 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder and enough milk to make it "gravy" like. Add enough soup mix to chicken and cheese to make it like chicken salad texture. Just thought I would share this, it was a really good dinner!

  29. In the Chicken in a Biscuit recipe it says right after you combine the chicken and the cheese to lightly spray with no stick spray, what is it you spray the chicken mixture or the 9 x 13 dish which it the next thing to do.

Also why do you let it cool at the end don't you eat this hot? or is it that she means let the gravy thicken a bit by standing for a few minutes. please advise.

  32. I think I'm gonna make these for a Halloween party this weekend.
For those of u who aren't sure about canned chicken, it is fully cooked, comes on two different sized cans and is packed in water usually. I assume u need to drain the chicken. It is usually next to the canned tuna in my grocery store. I only use this in the Buffalo Chicken Dip recipes and a soup recipe from Taste of home called Comforting Chicken Noodle soup. (I think it smells like tuna, but it does taste like chicken after it's cooked in the recipes.)
Any pre cooked chicken should work just fine. The raw chicken may not be done when the biscuits are done. I would not use raw chicken.
    Thanks for posting this recipe.
I don't look at it as a boxed meal, it's just semi-homemade comfort food.

  34. @Lyndsey

    Hi Lyndsey,

After combining the cheese and shredded chicken, the recipe says to "Lightly spray pan with nonstick spray."

"Let cool and enjoy" just means that you should allow the pan to sit for a few minutes before eating.

    Enjoy :)

  38. Thanks but we didn't like this. It made the rolls soggy and the canned chicken was off tasting. Adding some fresh vegetables would certainly improve things. Next time I will just bake some real chicken breasts and fresh rolls then top with some homemade gravy.

  45. Thank you so much for posting this recipe. I saw it on that episode of 10 Kids and Counting, and immediately went to look for the recipe.

It really is delicious, but the dough came out a bit too gooey and doughy for me. So I tweaked the recipe a bit, and this is what I came up with:

  48. Loved the idea of chicken in a biscuit recipe. With so many food restrictions I am now going to get creative and find a way to make this gluten free and maybe with homemade chicken gravy rather than using cream of chicken soup. Thank you Anna's friend for the great recipe idea, and thank you for posting!

Crescent rolls are a rich, flaky type of crescent-shaped dinner roll. The dough comes in a tube and is ready to bake.

Why all of the high sodium, processed foods? Lots of cheese and canned food products. Where is the "healthy" in the Duggar diet??

    1. I agree, I buy full chickens, make 3 recipes from that, then I freeze the bones, after my second chicken I take the bones, make a stock, then I make cream of celery soup. I eat that for 2 meals, then I take the leftovers, and make chicken and bicuits.

    2. because that's the food you eat when you're trying to stretch your budget, which i'm sure the duggars were more focused on before income from the tv show. no it's not so healthy, but if what is financially ideal to some when they're trying to feed families. you can see this reflected in many ways.
